Gone were the tents set up in the art room of the palace, replaced with a dedicated and guarded building in the Royal Academy of Science in New Blackmouth. Aside from secretive glassmaking furnaces and more standard experimental labs where men of science played around with glass and light and chemicals, there were also large and complex rooms where the brilliance of the sun was captured, focused, concentrated, broken apart, filtered, and altered. The discovery of the wealth of rare ores had proven an enormous boon, propelling the research forward by leaps and bounds as difficult to replicate doping and tinting processes were replaced with highly reliable additions of the ore into the melts. Where the original optics had been strange and random flukes, these new batches were almost mass producible. Experienced glass makers were still required to get the heating, mixing, casting, and cool just right, but even if any given batch might not render up much of the material, almost every batch would now produce something usable.
Nokly was in the primary lab now, watching the most successful set up produced to date. Much of the room was taken up with a complex array of mirrors, prisms, and reflective tubing that allowed for the isolation of different parts of the spectrum of light from the sun. For the current configuration two parts of the spectrum were being isolated: the green portion, and a ghostly portion that existed beyond violet and could only be observed by its interaction with other materials. Just the way the faintly green and yellow glasses glowed an eerie but brilliant green when exposed to this invisible light would have been worth a visitation by the king, just because it was fascinating to look at, but there was so much more locked away in these high security labs. While none were quite sure what exactly their discoveries were good for, everyone was certain that it would be the foundation for lucrative manufacturing processes one day and thus it should remain a trade secret.
Standing in a dark room, Nokly watched as a faintly yellow green lens the size of a dinner plate was illuminated with pure green light extracted from the sun, casting the room in a strange cast where colours were all wrong. The scientists then activated clockwork mechanisms that used tiny springs and hammers to ring an array of tuning forks mounted upon the lens, essentially allowing it to vibrate at the strange frequencies indefinitely. With these appartati the light within the room was broken up into ringed arrays of bright spots as seen years ago. While there was both the green light seen before, there was also that eye watering strangeness to parts of it. Then a shutter was opened and the invisible light from beyond violet was shone upon the edge of the lens, causing it to glow with its own inner light, and the spots of light to expand in size and intensity by many times. At the heart of the largest spots was that "not-green" colour.
There was really no other way to describe it. It was very clearly not any colour that any tongue had language for, but it was also closest in character to the colour green.
"Other nations working on the physics of light have already coined the terms 'infrared' and 'ultraviolet' to talk about the invisible parts of the spectrum that influence the world, so we are dubbing our discoveries 'meta-colour'. Currently meta-green is the only meta-colour we can truly reliably produce in significant amounts; we think we might be able to get a meta-yellow with a richer mix of ores into the melt, and meta-red or meta-infrared appears in some of the still difficult to reliable produce materials from the earliest discoveries," the Dean of Optics explained while Nokly looked at the light in awe.
Reaching out as if to touch it, he hesitated and asked, "Is it safe?" He almost immediately felt foolish for asking the question. It was just light after all.
Grinning, the Dean not just stuck his hand in one of the beams, letting the eerie meta-light play across his skin, but pulled out a pin. Pricking himself with it, he drew a bead of blood that looked black as tar in the green light. Wiping it away with a kerchief, he then held out the hand to reveal that after exposure to meta-green the wound had healed up, causing Nokly to gape in awe.
"As you can imagine, we figured this out by accident. One of the workers had already cut himself on a broken lens but discovered that it had healed much faster than normal. Intentional exposure has revealed a number of further curiosities, such as for some strange reason it doesn't work on most creatures, only really men and a few other higher animals. There are of course already a number of theological arguments about all of this, but we are fairly certain that not only does exposure to meta-green enhance healing to an absurd degree, but it does not work on the micro-organisms that seem responsible for many diseases. Although it doesn't do anything against them either, so uh... be careful about infection if you heal without properly cleaning the wound. That was an unpleasant discovery," the Dean explained, his face contorting in memory as he also reexamined his hand just in case.
"How powerful is the effect?" Nokly asked excitedly.
The Dean waggled his hand noncommittally and said, "We only discovered the effect very recently, just before this latest batch of optics where we were getting effects worthy of showing off to you. We have yet to try with anything more extreme, although thus far those with older amputations have shown no sign of regrowth, and for obvious reasons no one is volunteering for a more significant injury. Perhaps meta-green merely accelerates natural healing, perhaps a more significant injury is beyond its restorative power, or perhaps we have simply been unable to expose those with significant injuries to enough or high enough intensity to show results. With your permission we would like to begin tests on volunteers to see if concentrated long term exposure is able to overcome minor amputations like missing toes or legs."
"Of course! Of course," Nokly noted while he continued to play his hands through the strange light. "Between you and the biology department, the sciences may just save the kingdom."
"Sire?"
Weighing things up, Nokly judged the Dean of Optics the sort of man who could keep state secrets, and said, "The Crown Corp Scandal was nearly worse than anticipated, the initial sell-off proved too small to cover the funding increases to the various universities, academies and churches doing educational outreach - only an emergency extra round snuck in by bureaucrats who realized the problem saved us from tax riots. And even then the increasing awareness of health problems in the cities nearly caused riots over clean drinking water and access to hygiene products like soap. People aren't happy that they are being told they should wash more if they want to stay healthy when the taxes are biting into other essentials like food and housing, but thankfully it seems the fact that we are in fact doing work into improving public health with the taxes rather than spending it all on foreign wars seems to have gone a long way towards mollifying people... for now. If you can get this working in general..."
The Dean nodded and said, "Sire, this room represents a considerable investment of expert work and expensive materials. While not as ludicrous as one might think, if you want more significant progress we need more funding, and even then things can only go so fast. The medical trials are going to take time more than anything else. If we can build more chambers like this we can run more trials in parallel to be able to see the full effects, but things can only happen so fast."
Nokly nodded at that. He had obviously seen some of the reports from before and how even though they could reliably produce the effect, they were still largely unsure of what could practically be done with it. The healing effects were huge but obviously not really something that could be widely deployed as of yet. Further investment into research could definitely be huge, and there were some who were calling for it, but there was the obvious issue of how to pay for it to get done within the decade.
The obvious answers were: stop the war, and sell more Crown Corps. The war with the Nohon was rapidly turning sour in the public opinion as many saw it as being increasingly pointless. The Hung were still fighting, but more and more provinces were more or less declaring that while still loyal to the emperor, they would do nearly anything to get the Nohon to stop hitting them. By the metric of "obey when ordered to provide military support" almost all of the southern provinces were in revolt, even if there were only a tiny number that were actually taking up arms against the emperor. It was probably best to just settle things with the Nohon - technically the People had gained territory in all of this, even if it wasn't particularly worthwhile territory - before the war situation caused problems at home. If nothing else the People's support for the Cahok had been something of an effective warning shot across the Nohon's bow that the People could play in multiple fronts and had deeper reserves than the Nohon. That the Cahok were in the process of settling their war with the UPM and New Hespranxia and thus would be around for at least the next decade was not lost on the Nohon either.
The urge to cool off the military was also growing from the reports out of the Black Sheep. While the situation was more or less stable, the political elite had suddenly become very aware of the possibility of an eruption of problems closer to home. Continual fighting far from the core territories exhausting the coffers and the People through a continuous turn over of troops in the Far East was seen of as a dangerous game. While many were of the opinion that it wasn't a problem, many others were far less sanguine about the possibility of the People getting themselves into trouble with debts and unrest for someone to take advantage of. While there was a national sense that conflict was noble and romantic, there were others who were of the opinion that the military was for use in glaring at others to keep them from taking a swing at the People.
Then there was the question of the Crown Corps. With so many sales going through successfully, there was now a movement to sell off everything. While the Conservatives and Royalists were wary of the Liberals drawing up plans to sell off even core companies that were considered of a strategic interest, pretty much every plan was now being conceived of as being paid for in part by the sale of some Crown Corporations. Of course the only group really interested in sending funding towards the sciences were the Liberals... although Nokly now had a bit of ability to get his own legislation through if he really wanted to, although far less efficiently than the parties.
Finally, there was one final way to generate some extra funds quickly. The Kielmyr had let it slip that maybe the reason that they wanted the new rare ores the People had discovered was because it somehow related to certain steel making techniques and thus they might be willing to help lay some railroads to better increase the amount of ore the People could ship. While it would be a considerable foreign investment, it would definitely be useful for both parties.

It doesn't make infections worse either, to be fair.
It just doesn't stop them, and 'Accelerate natural healing' is bad when that natural healing would lead to your guts rotting out.
Still, Magic Confirmed I guess? Nice to know! It amuses me too that we're in a good spot now to reclaim our titles as the Kings of Health--assuming we can mass produce this anyway.

Seems like Magic is derived from the Sun, but is generally too random and dilute to get anything coherent, outside the likes of Geniuses, who are just twisted enough that they specially metabolize one or two of the Meta-Colors and let it gather in them, which creates the idiot-savant tendencies we've seen in Geniuses (Where they're preternaturally effective in one field in a sense that beggars belief, but largely incapable in everything else)
The Lenses allow the elimination of the unwanted aspects of it, permitting concentration of the desirable elements.
If this phenomenon were feasible on a mass-scale, medicine and surgery will be irreversibly changed. Ymaryn physicians will be able to mend a surgical incision immediately after disimfecting it, without the need for stitches or cautery... And in warfare, a tool capable of rapidly resealing wounds in the field will help tremendously in battles of attrition.
Now, I'm almost certain this thing will come with a number of caveats, but, judging from what little I can ascertain from this update alone, if we can develop this "meta-green," we might just be able to harness its power to revolutionize... everything.
I haven't had chills this bad since we got our Philosopher King.

We've stuck our necks out for the Hung several times now. Results have not been forthcoming. It hurts to say it, but I think we need to cut our losses. We just can't sustain this forever, and it looks like there's probably going to be at least a dynasty change no matter what we do. Southern provinces are probably going to revolt-revolt and either stick someone on the throne or have a civil war.

Frankly, this shit is just tiring. Let's end it. We got some territory. The Hung have pretty well fractured, so there isn't going to be a universal "opening of the market."
Veto. We can't keep selling off crown corps. It's a bad habit to get into and can lead to an economic bubble as all the shit we have paid for can't be maintained with consistent funds.

But of course. I am always interested in doing business with allies and friends. And we will poach the technology.
But yeah, looking at it, we have an explanation for our Geniuses--they're just people who had some kind of quirk or mutation where they're influenced disproportionately by certain Meta-Colors, to the point where it hampers their ability to function in other respects in exchange for preternatural aptitude in a single field.
And as we've established, it's already in everyone. It's just naturally jumbled up in a way that no one Meta Color has superiority. We just learned how to block all the undesired Meta Colors and focus a single one, which lets us get the full benefit from that.
