Statue funded by Shrine of Insurance? Wonderful.
Fuck you Tampliers and your banking money, we will show you how it's done with Maximum Arete.

[X] [Reputation] Generosity. Kymai was a city allowed to keep its Sybil, its traditions, its customs, its limits to citizenship, and even those who had previously opposed the city's democracy on the basis of a new peace. No other city would do this, with such willingness to provide, such acceptance of the needs of others, and such unquestioning effort for those who are in need. This is a reflection of Eretria's extraordinary capability for generosity, foremost among the Hellenes, and will reflect well on its relations with current and future dependencies.

Hmmm

Do we have a play about the journey from Hellas to Italia yet?

This is how I would interpret the [Reputation] options:
Generosity: Maximum effect on Epulian Leauge, Significant effects on the other Adriatic Greek, Smaller Effects on everyone else.
Taking this would allow us to expand the League into the southern Adriatic more quickly.
Brotherhood: Maximum effect on the major regional powers, Significant effects on followers of the Divine Marriage and fellow Ionian Greeks.
Taking this would mean we have an easier time building a powerful alliance system with Thurii and Rhegion (both regional Ionian powers).
Ingenuity: Maximum effect on mainland Greek powers and beyond.
Taking this would give us more weight when trying to influence the outcome of the Peloponnesian War.

This is of course a very short summation and non of these options lock us into any one path. Especially, the Brotherhood option seems to cover a wide range of diplomatic contacts. Both the Epulian League, through the DM, and fellow Ionians, such as Athens or the Sikeliotes, would also be affected by this option.

For now:

Keep doubling down on the Naval tradition!

[x] [Reputation] Ingenuity. Kymai was a city on the cusp of destruction, facing the annihalation of its citizenry, until Eretria, and no other, saved it. Through diplomatic guile, through capable negotiation, through the ability of Eretrians to gain the better in any kind of deal it enters into, Eretria was able to convince the citizens of a free city to settle among them and join their league. This is a reflection of Eretria's diplomatic guile and political finesse, foremost among the Hellenes, and will gain it respect among greater and distant powers.

Athenai here we come!

Looks like Korinth will be taking us seriously from now on. It's a good thing we sent this mission to Athenai.

Edit: I am leaning toward voting for Drakonai next turn. We need the trade money and it seems like there immigrant policy works pretty well with our decision to allow wealthy metics to buy properly inside our city. Might also work wonders for our culture and Architecture.

I think we should consider the matter of the statue more carefully than has hitherto been the case. It is a Great Work, a defining symbol of the polis that will stand out for future generations. It is also an opportunity to impress visitors and traders from around the Mediterranean and thereby spread the prestige and cultural draw of Eretria to Hellas, Sicily, and even beyond to Carthage or into the Persian Empire.

And honestly Ploutos and Numismata seems like a dumb meme vote to me. It's definitely unique, but creating a "cult of capitalism" is not going to happen. Economic theory remains primitive and while commerce is not disreputable neither does it enjoy a great deal of respect among Hellenes. It's the weakest choice, to my mind, for augmenting the glory of the city to outsiders and drawing in greater respect.

Poseidon and Demeter trampling the Liburni by contrast is a classic sort of celebratory motif. Positioning it at the Byssis Harbor entrance insures maximum visibility to traders and visitors, enhancing its appeal as a choice. And the two together in a statue seen as beautiful and outstanding enough to class as a Great Wotk might give their pairing greater cultural cachet in the Adriatic and among Hellenes. Honestly it's my first choice as the most dignified and impressive-seeming composition. Also of all the gods save Zeus and Apollo+Athene they have done the most for Eretria; our power and prosperity is owed to command of the seas and a fertile, generous soil with good harvests.

Joyous Dionysius also is a good option, with the chance to present a new standard for classical realism depicting passion. It could stand comparison with other Great Works of Hellenic art and could draw much needed attention to the Theater. But we should need to make a dedicated effort to improve our level of cultural appeal lest the opportunity it presents goes somewhat to waste.

In general I quite like the idea of the Poseidon and Demeter statue and the Byssos Harbor boosting each other. One is a Great Artwork and the other a Great Work, while the statue won't be a Colossus of Rhodes, together they might become significantly more renowned, than the new harbor and a different statue on their own. Widerspread knowledge of our expanded trade focus would surely boost prospective trading opportunities.

Victory motifs are the definitive marker of glory and splendour and a reminder of strength, more so when all the world will witness it from their ships as they approach eretria.

@Cetashwayo, non hellens forgeiners are forbidden entry to the city, I assume the harbour area is an exception?

Those are some good points, and caused me to shift the Poseidon and Demeter statue up to second choice for me. However, I think another thing to consider is who else is paying for the statue. The Ploutos and Numismata statue is being funded by the Ploutos temple, which implies that the temples might become active in investment in the city, rather than only being funded by the city. That's an interesting innovation. While the Dionysius statue is being funded by Metics, which is an interesting thing, for Metics to devote a large amount of money to beautifying the city. It suggests they are committed to Eretria, and will help smooth future rights granted to them. Poseidon and Demeter are being supported by a wealthy citizen, which is traditional, and doesn't really offer anything more beyond the statue effects itself.

That's enough to make Dionysius the first choice for me, as I really do what to increase our cultural push as well.

Also, I expect that we will have opportunities again to build additional statues as part of the great works platforms (though at greater cost since the city will bear the full cost), and Poseidon and Demeter seem a natural choice for that.
