Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

"I actually considered contacting Slender and begging him to take your powers away. If you didn't have powers, your father wouldn't have a reason to force you to work for Winter Hill. You would be safe. Then I found out anyone he's ever taken powers from has died under mysterious circumstances. That ruled him out from ever putting his hands on you."
............................Mom...That's probably more due to them making enemies as villains prior to losing their powers than a direct reaction to losing their powers.

Unless QM says otherwise? I haven't read manager.
Why does Laura's mom talk like a divorce isn't a thing? Like she says Laura can run away if need be but that she has to stay because she married him.
Because cops and courts are the reason divorce is a thing. Normal divorces get UGLY on both sides, what do you think trying to divorce a villain would likely end with? Or, hell, a worm hero?

Could be a religious thing (Catholics, for example), could just a resignation that her trying to leave might be more dangerous in the short term. Perhaps she thinks Laura could get her out once she's free and has her new situation sorted, as well.

Edit: :ninja:

The idea of having protection equal to a high-level Brute? Protection stronger even than Taylor's, which had been enough to let the girl all but shrug off a rocket-propelled grenade straight to the face?
Well, I wouldn't call a concussion and multiple broken ribs "shrugging it off" Laura. More like surviving. Anyway, it's not public knowledge but we've upgraded our defense since then.

You're a cape now,' he told her on more than one occasion when she had just joined the gang, 'and capes don't show fear. Fear is for the weak.'
Even more proof Jotunn's an idiot. Fear is the mindkiller, true, but a certain amount of fear also creates caution, keeps you sharp.

Speaking of, we may need to do a hot extraction of Laura's mother from Winter Hill territory. Leaving her alone with a criminally inclined Brute doesn't sit well with me.

Kudos on the Manager reference Silently!

Probably because she's married to some who's not just an active Parahuman, not just a member of a villain gang, but someone who's the parahuman leader of a villain gang. Those sorts of people don't tend to be all that reasonable, and she and Laura are talking about what happens if Jotunn finds out about Laura trading her powers away and becoming an enemy.

Um, Laura's mom is married to the man behind the Jotun identity! She's expecting to get brute-beaten anyway, and wants Laura as far away as possible!

1) As others have said, she's married to a parahuman gang leader. Getting out wouldn't be all that easy.
2) Why don't all abused women leave their husbands?

It's a bit of an in-story joke from Manager. Anyone Slenderman depowered either disappeared or died. It wasn't the result of S's powers, but the Protecterate doesn't know that.
I liked Manager too bad the story died out.
It isn't dead, just very, VERY slow between updates.

In case anyone is interested, Laura's mom is also now on the Magical Potentiates list. I'll add Kayleigh's mother and maternal relatives some time.

Hmm....we know that the base linker core is inheritable, and judging from the show Rare Skills can be inherited, so is linker core size also inheritable? After that update, I kind of want to give Willow a way to escape or defend herself.

Great update :)

Slip her a Boost Device and have her learn Barrier Jacket...

Any and all Devices come with Barrier Jacket(or the upgrade, Knight Armor), free of charge. Recruit the Momenator, give her some prosthetic fingers...

I know it wouldn't be that easy. Leaving an abusive spouse is never easy, regardless of whether the abuse is physical, emotional, or even just social, as controlling people are good at, well, controlling people.

I read this about a month ago, so my memory may have slipped, but Linker Core size strength and cleaning are based on mitochondrial DNA, which is why it's passed down through the mothers. Rare skills were something different, though I don't quite remember how.

I mean, pretty soon we're gonna make a good effort to wipe out the Fallen, probably spectacularly. After that, we could have the team back Laura and help her mom get away from him, maybe. Winter Hill might do something stupid, but it's not like they can take on our full might.

Is Linker Core size inheritable? Who knows.

I will point out that Willow most likely won't defend herself. She'll defend LAURA no question, but not herself.

I don't think Laura's mother wants magic, just a normal life.

If we had the money and resources we could just set her in an Earth with no Capes or Endbringers.

There's a world that thinks Tay sam an missy are gods who came and killed their existing oppressive deities... i think it wouldn't be too hard to set her up there.

Yeah but they're in what, the Bronze Age? I'm sure Laura's mom (where was she called Willow? I must have missed that) would prefer something closer to modern times, Quality Of Life is a thing.

Even if she's unwilling to leave, giving her a storage device with spells only suited to hiding and running away would let her protect herself without having to actually fight back.

As much as that is unlikely to ever occur to Taylor, Laura finding out that magic is matrilineal might lead to her making a request of Tim. If her Barrier Jacket could operate like Knight Clothing for Hybrid Hive Eat Shard, where the BJ looks exactly like whatever she was wearing when activating it, she could protect herself enough that, with some acting, she wouldn't need to be as bruised as she would have been without that protection and yet not reveal her increased toughness.
