Green Sun, Black Shadows (CG/Exalted)

Awwwww... :(

...

*thinks*

'I, I'm sorry Lulu, but I can't tell you. I can't. What he, the Ebon Dragon wants me to do, it's, it's, horrible. *sniffs, barely holds back tears* I, I promise it won't hurt the Reclamation or get in the way of anybody else's Urges, I promise! But I can't tell you, I can't, I don't want to have anybody else have to go through this with me, b-because of me. *sobs, clutches Lelouch desperately* Please, please, don't make me tell you!'

That's such blatant manipulation that it's not even funny. You gave her Manipulation 2, and this would probably fall under Performance since she'd be acting, so she's not likely to get that past Lelouch. I'm not sure this would even get past Witness to Darkness, given she intends to betray everyone eventually.

She can get away with being non-deceptive about this easily enough:

Samantha: "My mission from the Ebon Dragon is something I need to keep secret. I am fairly certain that the Ebon Dragon does wish his plans in this matter known. I hope you can understand. However, it would be helpful for my mission if I was in a position where I could help resolve issues between our fellow Green Sun Princes."

Lelouch couldn't really question that since it wouldn't be a lie or a deception, as it's orders from a Yozi, and she's got the Charisma necessary to be very likable so that Lelouch probably wouldn't push the matter. And while he might be suspicious, he'd probably be glad to have someone assist him with the madhouse that is the Althing Infernal.

Also, you set her specialty to be Britannian Nobles, but you can set it to be just Nobility like with Lelouch.

The blatancy was very much deliberate. :p

Also, I gave her Britannian Nobility specifically because she's not well travelled or educated outside of the specifics of the Britannian court; it wouldn't make sense for her to know about how the nobility of (say) the Chinese Federation acts.

Well, to be fair Lelouch hasn't really dealt with any Chinese nobles either, but that doesn't matter regarding his Specialty. Remember that this is Exalted, where an Ability and even a Specialty covers a broad degree of subjects, and once you have a Specialty you can't really change it. Having a Socialize specialty in Nobility doesn't necessarily impart the knowledge of how to deal with Chinese nobles, but it does mean she'd pick up on the nuances and details of it more quickly than she otherwise would because there are bound to be similarities.

"I-I, so would I be allowed to… disappear?" Samantha asked, the slightest flutterings of hope stirring inside her despite her best efforts to keep them suppressed. "To find somewhere where I can be alone, where, where no one can hurt me again?"
Motivation: To hide from the world
And so, in a moment that was part desperation, part madness, and part simply no longer caring about her fate, she clenched her fists and yelled, "W-well fine then! Fine! If you're going to betray me, I'll just betray you first! You hear me? I'll betray you first!"
...Oh, Samantha. Even when the Ebon Dragon expects and wants your betrayal, this is probably the best choice you can make. Because if he gets free and can grant your wish, warped by his perception about the everything, well. You will probably realize yourself what he might do to you if you take a dip into his Charmset. Especially the one that allows him to banish you to beyond existence (without your Celestial Exaltation) when he would otherwise "just" kill you, while also making you immortal to suffer your new existence in endless and complete solitude.

The Ebon Dragon: What? It is exactly what you wished for. Not even the Celestial Exalted at the height of their First Age could bring back those who I had banished during the War. So you will be completely isolated and safe from the world there, even from me! And there is absolutely nobody in the existence who could do anything to spoil this beautifully poetic betrayal.
Oramus: Yo, little bro! I think I heard you talking something about "beyond existence" and "impossible" in the same sentence. You sure you want to keep digging that hole, now that I have a Chosen with my powers and who is free to use them?
The Ebon Dragon: ...Hate you. Hate you so much.

Did somebody say "beyond the impossible"?

Man, Oramus is practically designed to troll the Ebon Dragon. He hard counters everything.

The Ebon Dragon: ...Hate you. Hate you so much.

Hate is love.

Too complicated.

Just tease her half brother about his love life until he explodes. Its a family thing.

First Lesson of the Dragon
This is a nice thing, but she lacks the ambition of an Exalt. In order to become a celestial Exalt, you need ambition. You have to be the sort of person who upon being given superpowers, runs out and uses them to impose your will on the world. Not someone who would gladly run off to grow a small garden in the middle of nowhere.

She wants to hide from the entire world. Exalts, Yozi, Deathlords, and humans alike. To make it so none of them can reach her if she doesn't want them to, despite the fact that she'd be sought after by them as an ally, or servant, or pawn, etc, for the rest of her life. Are you honestly saying that that goal- and the lengths she'd have to go to achieve it- isn't insanely ambitious?

It's not a motivation that an Exaltation would pick up at the time when the Exaltation moved towards her, that's for sure. Exaltations seek out people who will use their awesome might, and someone who just wants to hide away from the world wouldn't be attractive. That's as true for Infernal Exaltations as any other kind, though it's possible that it was too late to back out when she changed motivations. Her motivation when the Exaltation showed up was probably something else, like "Make Britannia a better place to live for the poor and downtrodden" or something along those lines.

And honestly, her goal of hiding herself away from the world isn't all that grand or difficult - Self-Within-Self Inversion accomplishes it. She could just never leave her Devil Domain if she wanted, and nobody could follow her in. Have some devas made to fulfill her needs, and she's set. That said, I think she'd very quickly grow tired of that kind of existence. I really can't see her maintaining this motivation forever - it's the result of a traumatic experience which she'll have plenty of time to get over.

Maybe her motivation should be "Never to be betrayed again." And asking for an oubilette is the only way she sees how?

That's actually pretty accurate; if you reread, her desire to vanish didn't surface until midway through the conversation with Sinha, and didn't get cemented until she was talking with Ebby. I wasn't quite thinking of it in terms of motivations when I was writing that, but that is basically how it turned out.

That said, she does want to use her power, just not in an 'I will reshape the world in my own image' way. It's more in an 'I will carve a pocket out of the Wyld that is impossible to find, filled with deadly traps, and constantly moving... and then use that as a decoy for my real hiding place whilst I start working on a way to make the whole world remember that there were actually 299 Solar and 49 Infernals, not 300 and 50' way. Hence my thoughts that it is an appropriate Exalted motivation, if not necessarily an Exaltation attracting one.

Basically, her definition of hiding in this case is something along the lines of 'if every supernatural being everywhere did nothing but try to find me for a thousand years they'd still fail, and I don't lose any freedom or get restricted in any way'. Whether or not her motives will change, however... that's largely going to be down to how her interactions with her peers and how her trip to Malfeas goes.

I'm pretty sure an Exalt mechanically CAN'T change their motivation without having their will broken first, or the motivation becoming impossible/invalid.

You're describing a goal as a powerful intimacy, rather than the bedrock of her existence

I'm reasonably sure that I remember reading that they can, though I'll have to wait until I can check the book to be sure; I think there's just some sort of penalty attached to it and/or it requires agreement from the GM. Of course, even if it isn't possible to change motivation that way, I'm sure some of her fellows or masters would be happy to oblige with breaking her.

IIRC, there is no mechanical way to change a motivation without becoming a will broken husk of yourself. However, the Corebook states that Motivations change over time, either expanding or switching completely due to character development and plot.

No, a Motivation can change naturally for Exalts just like it can for other people - new information, changes in their Intimacies, and things like that can all affect a Motivation. For instance, Samantha would probably have a Motivation change if she lost her Intimacies towards her parents (which would likely include Trauma and Betrayal) either by having those Intimacies removed by a Charm or just by having them fade away over time as new Intimacies come to the fore (provided those new Intimacies don't provide a similar issue regarding Betrayal).

Would the Unquestionables be so upset if we killed her whe she will inevitably exhibit chronic backstabbing disorder syndrome?

If she backstabbed us badly enough and we had sufficient evidence, most of them would be ok with it. The Ebon Dragon's Unquestionables though would probably be peeved... or delighted. It's hard to say.

Well, the first crop of GSPs was so incompetent that they all got themselves killed before the Conventicle Malfeasant could even be gathered, so I doubt that the Unquestionable are unused to the idea that the Infernals might not all be a well-oiled machine. Culling a few incompatible members would probably be permitted, so long as they demonstrated themselves to be incompetent or traitorous.

Shinjuku Shadowland 1.2
[X] Plan Enjou

Your very first act of rebellion saw you commanding terrorists into fighting back and winning against the world's strongest superpower. The power of the world's genesis flows into your veins and those of many of your associates.

"Wise advice." You raise a hand, pointing with a finger at the approaching ghosts. "In that case I-"

Two blurs shoot past you. Two blurs that turn out be Akio and Akito as they slam into the horde like an armored truck running into a mob of civilians.

That is, body parts and assorted gore start filling the air.

Your finger drops. "-Was going to suggest a plan, but it's a moot point at this point."

"I'm sorry!" Leila quickly bows to you before marching towards Akito, reprimanding him even as she crushes a ghost's head without even looking.

"If it can help, I am still willing to listen to your idea Zero." Nadir pats your shoulder in a friendly matter.

Looking around, and seeing the others display the same interest, you decide this is salvageable. "Listen well. Right now the best choice is to maintain a box formation. Melee fighters will deal with small groups of hungry ghosts and other low level threats, staying in range of the main group in case they need to retreat and fire support is needed, and will being backed up by two Anuhles each to prevent them from being overwhelmed and look out for ambushes. They will rotate in this duty, always keeping one of them close to the main group in case of trouble. Avoid firing any loud weapons if you can. Peer Yelena," You address her. "you will have direct command of your own group, but I advise you to follow the same strategy."

"It's a good strategy." She acknowledges with a small smile before starting to give orders to her followers.

You reply with a nod before turning to the others. "Peer Milly, Peer Kaguya I would like you to stay in the center of the group. Peer Milly can use very effective long-ranged attacks, and they will be needed against any particularly deadly foe."

"If that's the case I can do the same." Kaguya replies with a smile. Looking around she spots a lone ghost advancing on them and swipes her hand in a dismissing gesture. At that moment a violent burst of silver sand erupts from behind it, flinging it away like a ragdoll before it lands with a sickening crunch. It doesn't get up.

"Impressive. Then Peer Milly and Peer Kaguya will be our long-ranged hitters. One last thing then." You glance at the remaining Anuhles. "Form three groups of two each. I want you to be on scout duty and to report immediately any finding. Jikhs, helps one of the groups." The Chernobaalim nods sharply. "Finally, one group will scout behind in case anything try following us. Everything clear? Good, let's begin."

{====}

As the minutes pass one thing quickly becomes evident: that for Exalts it is almost trivially easy to dispatch ghosts. The examples are many, and provide you a good chance to see how your peers fight.

Akio is a literal juggernaut, forgoing all pretense of dodging in favors of just hitting harder his opponents as they overextend themselves. Which is something he can spam, since very rarely the ghosts' attacks inflict any form of relevant damage. Plenty of clothes damage and cuts, but no real injuries.

Akito is equally ferocious in his assault, but where Akio is a wall the blue-haired youth is a whirlwind of destruction, literally untouchable as he moves around with graceful but ruthless movements that kill enemies before they can even get closer. After the initial burst Leila has managed to impart him some measure of discipline and now he follows (some) orders, while she acts as a sub-commander in your own group and dispatch ghosts with martial arts.

Yelena is commanding her own troops, who display the kind of confidence that is only born from complete trust in one's own leader, while she uses the same kind of sand attacks as Kaguya.

Perhaps the greatest surprise is that Nadir and you...work surprisingly well together. It is evident the Scourge still lacks complete mastery of his sword, but with him taking the front and you covering his back with your Hellcaster any opposition is swiftly deal with.

With the morale high and all sides covered your group proceeds deeper inside the ghetto, encountering only Hungry Ghosts.

-TATATATATATATATA!!!!

At least, until the sound of automatic rifles reach your ears. Almost immediately the group of Anuhles Jikhs joined comes out from behind a near corner, running towards you. "Peer Zero!" The Chernobaalim growls. "Britannian War Ghosts!"

'War Ghosts?'

"The Ghosts of soldiers that die on the battlefield. Unlike the Hungry Ghosts, they retain their sanity."

"Behind cover!" You bellow. Your group barely manage to slip into two and retreat inside two buildings at either side of the road that three teams of ghosts wearing Britannian armors appear and start firing. You and those with a firearm shoot back, but the Britannians move like professionals and take cover, creating a stalemate.

"What happened?" You demand while reloading.

"The strangest thing Boss." Ghitore, one of the Anuhles, start. "We were scouting ahead like ordered when we found a literal camp. Those Britannian ghosts were working on it, setting things up and moving around loads of weapons and whatnot."

Ghosts setting up a military camp? Uhm, considering those are Britannian soldiers, could they be those who died during the last battle.

"A good chunk of them were listening to a human female making some kind of speech." Jikhs continues. "We were going to leave and report to you, when..." he looks at the Anuhles.

"I swear Boss, all of a sudden the female looks up and stare in our direction like she could see us, which is impossible because we were well hidden! After that she entered some kind of frenzy and started screaming orders. We flew, but somehow they managed to follow us!"

"I don't know how relevant it is, but the female was screaming 'spiders!' like it was a synonym for Adorjan." The Chernobaalim says.

Interesting. Could it be this female can somehow an Anuhle's presence? "How does that female look like?"

"Just look outside Boss, she's the only one without a helmet."

You nod. Moving very slowly you approach the corner and, when it is your men's turn to fire, take a peek. It only takes a few seconds to find your target.

By her uniform and ranks she is clearly a Knight. She is also, judging from the crazed look in her eyes, in the middle of a serious panic attack.

"Look at that!" The head of an Anuhle pops above you. "That chick looks like someone I ate."

Oh, that explains everything. Even the knight turning white as a corpse despite her dusky skin and bending down to pick up-oh fuck!

"RPG!" You bellow.

You and the others manage to reach the room's other side when the blast hits the building, causing the ceiling to develop more cracks that you are comfortable with.

You never thought that one day you would need to kill the same person twice.

But, by Malfeas' Wrath, that is exactly what you are going to do!

[] Write-in.
