Now that question Is if Ruby will give Ayako a cute outfit like Illya, or a risky one like Miyu (let's be honest, that's a fact)

I retract any and all previous misgivings about Ayako as Shirou's girlfriend. All hail the Wizard Marshal and his goofy-ass wands!
Also, sharp-tongued teasing Circe remains best Circe.

So I'm not that deep in the Fate hole, but I do know that Ruby seems silly but is actually really dangerous, and that while Ayako has her head on relatively straight, this is a very stressful and dangerous situation. Ruby isn't something that gets handed out at random, or at all it the situation doesn't call for it.

So we have a bunch of servants that shouldn't be around, BB is hanging out and I'm not sure what she even is in this context, there's the time traveler...

Yeah this is definitely a clusterfuck, and it's now past a tipping point. Where before it was so ridiculous laughing was the only sensible thing to do, now you have to laugh or else you'll curl up in a ball and never move again.

Good Luck

… What?
Me: *Reads the prenote* Right, so expect Ayako to get horribly murdered this scene. No way things get more fucky.
Erien: Aight bet

Circe smiles. "Then remain a bitch and avoid becoming a pussy my dear pupil."

You throw the tome at her. She laughed regardless, even as it slammed into her face.
Holy shit I thought Circe was a Caster not Archer, she ain't got no business throwing hands this hard

10/10 can't wait to get back to Shirou trying to not die horribly next update

No thanks, I already have the hat.

But there's something I'm curious about, though this is more a question for the thread. My understanding of Ruby is that's sort of a Servant slotting system. You have a card of that Servant, stick that card in Ruby, and you can use that Servant's abilities as your own.

You also get whatever outfit Ruby wants to stick you in.

But I'm not sure how those cards get made, or if they can be made at all with the way things currently are. So if Ayako can't get cards what else could she, in theory, do with Ruby?

A kid's toy wand? You stare at it, It was a red, maybe pink stick with a little star at the end of it, wings jutting out to either side
Oh shit
My understanding of Ruby is that's sort of a Servant slotting system.
Kinda right but only in the sense that you can call a toolkit a swiss army knife. Ruby is a Mystic Code designed to function/use the Second Magic: Kaleidoscope. Her primary function (Or at least what she spends most of her time doing) as I understand it is to breach barriers between timelines and sort of fold parts of them over their counterparts in this one. Now because she's a Mystic Code made by Zelretch, that is by no means all she is capable of, but of those secondary capabilities the magical girl stuff is definitely the most relevant to the current situation.

I would chalk the class card shenanigans up to being an intrinsic function of those rather than Ruby, she's just kinda acting as an intermediary there to protect from bleedthrough.

But I'm not sure how those cards get made, or if they can be made at all with the way things currently are
They were made by the Ainsworth family to displace the user with a Heroic Spirit. As it stands, they could in theory be made, but no one in the nearby area is either capable or inclined to do so

Huh. That's... one way to uplift a normie.

A bit torn about that one; Ayako's draw was her normality, and the fact that she could do little kept me wondering what she would do to keep up. But to keep even a modicum of plausibility of her surviving the level of involvement she signed up for, something like that was probably in order.

At least some part of my antipathy towards Medea in this quest comes from the way the Dark-Tragic-and-Mysterious superimposed herself over relationships that have been naturally developing over months and years prior -- and with her being our first (and almost-only) Servant, there aren't many ways for others to enforce boundaries; doubly so with Circe backing her up. I felt bad for Ayako (and Sakura, but that's a whole other can of worms). Now Ayako may still be the underdog (who doesn't love rooting for underdogs?), but can at least throw her weight around.

Ehh. Not my thing. I root for Ayako because as a mentally normal girl, she has none of the issues other girls have with staking her claim and trying for Shirou. She's a girl who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to take the initiative, which makes her the Apex predator. Is she less capable than them in terms of ability? Sure. Does that determine her strength as a contender for shirou's heart? Not really, in my opinion. Love isn't a talent contest after all.

In the real world, perhaps not. In an interactive novel, very much so.

Her inability to compete power-wise leads to her not being around Shirou when the story happens (and to contrived explanations of how she is still alive), decreases the amount of awesome-and/or-heartwarming scenes the character has, and makes the playerbase forget the character exists, which informs their future choices and leads to oblivion.

Ayako [...] as a mentally normal girl
Anyone mentally normal would leave the warzone during the crisis, realizing it'd be better for them and better for their loved one's peace of mind. If she were anything like a real person, she would have been out of the story after having been nearly decapitated by a living legend. Ayako is very much a Shiroic type, with a bit of cynicism draped over her to lower the bar of cuckoolanding to believable levels... and we love her for it. Sane people don't make good anime characters.

You hadn't been kidding up on that roof, you weren't going to give up on him, he needed support, from normal people.
I'm sorry to say, you adorable little ball of whup-ass, that you stopped being a normal girl the moment you stepped into the moonlit world. You've now just been handed your only way to stay alive while you're there.

Circe has been trying to get just that for her, but Caster's being all pouty and stubborn.

I want to emphasize this. Because Ayako is really, really not normal and never was. Before she knew anything about magic she changed a Yakuza fortress by herself. I love her for it, but it was a very stupid thing to do.

I can definitely understand the underdog thing, but she wasn't that either. Her known competition was Sakura, and I'm not actually sure she knew then Sakura was interested, and might still not. Ayako did the not anime thing and took initiative. She kinda hid it in the saving her brother thing, but that's a million times better then most anime teenagers.

Ayako still has some of that teen awkwardness, but she's otherwise direct, actually to a fault. She's also loyal, emphasized by sticking around even after Mordred stabbed her. So also kinda to a fault. She's athletic. She seems reasonably intelligent. Can't speak for her school work, but her reasoning for sticking with Shirou was solid. Not knowing what was happening hadn't protected her brother, and things were going to get worse. Being with Shirou might make her a target, but not being with him might make her collateral. Heck, she's even pretty hot. She's not mythological hero hot, but dang, she could turn heads if she wanted. Ayako definitely ranks well above human average. Still completely human, but in the upper percentile of human.

I emphasize this, because while I agree the power-up is necessary to keep her involved in the story, it's important to remember the title of this story. Because handing something like Ruby over to someone like Ayako is absolutely asking for trouble. And because we know the author isn't fucking around, Zelretch must think the potential fallout of this will be worth it. Or he thinks maybe Ruby would be less trouble for someone who doesn't have a lot of preconceived notions about magic and how special it makes them, even if they actually are kinda special.

I love Ayako and I'm excited to see what Ruby does for her roll in this story, but I doubt our first experience with this whole thing is going to be positive.

Zelretch also isn't above just helping good underdogs.
He never expected anything of Nagato's family but gave them the Jewel Sword blueprints because unlike the other two families Nagato was harmless.
What I'm saying is there is a non zero chance that things are fine and Zelretch is just being a grandpa who is helping out sombody who, while he expects nothing from is ultimately a good person.
