So, outlining this tomorrow.

Serious question for the thread, what do you like so far, and is there anything I could change? I've been having a lot of doubts about this story as Fate is a very hard universe to write for. And I really want to make sure people are enjoying themselves. I'm having to juggle a ton of characters and I seriously hope the story has remained coherent and enjoyable despite that.

There's been rumblings in the past in this thread, and I take all feedback personally, good and bad. I write for other's enjoyment, not myself. So please, do be honest.

And happy new year.

Happy New Year!
Honestly, my favourite part about this quest is how chaotic it is, with people like Saruman and BB who just came out of no where. It would be nice if you could make it even more of a cluckfuster, maybe you could even add more heroic spirits from other series or you could even get the dead apostles involved?
I am also a bit mad that we have so many chapters yet we barely have any magic girls, it has been a while since I've read this quest so I may be wrong. Either way, more magic girls would be much appreciated

what do you like so far
I love love love how willing you are to think outside the box and make things interesting by endlessly lobbing another wrench/character into the works, though don't feel the need to do so to the point your overwhelmed. So far however I feel your managing the cast admirably.

THe comedy is enjoyable, and character growth is reasonable for the time that has passed.

I would enjoy more people being made into pigs. Hassan of Oink would be great, and I can't begin to describe how tickled pink I would be for a Piglet Annatar or Kirei scene.

I'm, well, terrible with names, and liable to get worse now that I'm getting older. An info post with a list of characters would be helpful. It wouldn't need to be that descriptive. Name, rough appearance in short sentence. Obviously, characters who haven't been given a name but merely made an appearance could just be put as ???.

So, like, Ayako Mitsuzuri(I had to look this up because I forgot her name again), girl of average height with brown hair and eyes, Shirou's classmate. Nothing spoilery or too complex, but gives me a basic idea of the character in question that I can use to know who I'm trying to discuss in thread and avoid mistakes.

Otherwise keep up the good work, but don't overwork yourself.

Also, happy new year.

I love the quest, I love the way you're communicating with us. I didn't get the feel of "Ohh, surprise fuckup" - it was always logical if something went pear-shaped. (Or clusterfuck, but *that* warning was well in the heading.)
Please ignore my whining about Rin's fate - that's just personal disappointment and , and if it gets too much, let me know.

Improvements - not right now. The Grail War is kicking into high gear, and I think maybe a reminder of how you're going to play that could be well-placed. Will this be a relatively "soft" one? Or will this be bloody, brutal, and we can't protect them all? Because it looks like the latter, and I'm all in on that.

From Neil Gaiman's 8 Rules for Writing:
When people tell you something's wrong or don't work for them, they are almost always right. When they tell you exactly what they think is wrong and how to fix it, they are almost always wrong.
I gave you my "list of characters I care about", which is also an indication of which characters work for me, and which don't. The reasons might be subjective, the overall feeling might not be.

We are a year-and-a-half and 110k words into the quest, and no Master has died so far, which would be great for Shirou's stated goal of stopping the War with minimal casualties except he didn't do anything for it. I expect his values to be challenged and changed, from "I won't let anyone die" to "I will stop this war" to "I'll get my friends through this" to "I'll survive that maybe". Okay, maybe not -- he's Shirou, after all -- but I would expect the attempt, at least. If our alliance of three-to-four (to five, counting Ayako?) Masters is too formidable to be assailed by lesser factions, I expect the War to hit elsewhere, other Masters killing each other and taking the city down with them. He said he will stop the War, but what is he going to do about it?

Circe annoys me, for reasons that I can't clearly articulate. Despite this already being a clusterfuck of several franchises and plotlines colliding, she is the one that makes the quest feel like crackfic. Her shipping attempts, her molestations for lack of better word, her attitude, her appearance at the head of a herd of roving pigs... all of this makes it hard to take it seriously. You expressed displeasure with the levity some of the players allowed in regards to Rin's situation, but imagine the same being said in CIrce's voice, and it'd feel right at home. Which is... a shame. I quite liked her when she was our secret magic teacher whom we can't talk to Medea about, only seen in dream sequences and kept separate from the rest of the story.

As for the story... let's see if I remember the running plots/questions we want to find answers for:

* There's whatever is going on between Rin and Kotomine Kirei.
* There was something about Marisbury, "Oberon" and Luvia that is only told through interludes.
* What is Illya doing? Can we even get our sister to see things our way, let alone hostile Masters?
* What's going on with Berserker? Is this treatable?
* Who is the Master of Brihannala, and what do they want?
* Where is Fujimaru's Servant and what is going on with this timeline?
* There was Kadoc's interlude, and we haven't seen anyone from it since.

Anything I missed? I hope one of those is getting resolved -- or at least, advanced -- in the foreseeable future.

Happy New Year everyone!
And my favorite moments where the slower ones:

Having Sakura around and well way before canon, the slow but ever growing bond with Medea, having Big Sis Taiga around worried about Shirou, meeting Big Sis Illya in good terms, Ayako deciding to f*** it and become Shirou's first GF even despite all the nonsense, Circe being best Shishou to her Piggy, and so on.

Pretty much the calm and more personal moments between the clusterfuck between Shirou and his family/romantic partners.

A timeline where Shirou gets to have an idea about how important he Is to most girls in his life, and reciprocrating those feelings.

I'll admit I also like the interpersonal aspects the most. You don't see these relationships taking these particular forms in canon or most fic, if they form at all. Even Rin becoming our enemy, as much as it's us shooting ourselves in the foot, is something interesting and new. I can't wait to see where this goes next.

The relationship are definitely a highlight for me. I don't even know a lot of these characters that well, but your writing has me deeply invested in them. They're just interesting to watch.

I don't think there's any on the nose 'this is bad and should be changed' thing. At most I can say Shirou might have too many allies to try managing? It can be a bit unwieldy trying to keep up with everyone, especially when some characters need more attention then others. But that also feels like it's part of the challenge, and we'd be worse off without the limitation. There's a lot happening, but keeping track of it all hasn't been difficult either.

You're doing a good job man, keep it up.

Working on it.

People gonna die, people gonna die hard if they aren't saved. I have potential deaths here for everyone except Shirou (permanently).

Every single one of the above plotlines will be handled, just this is gonna be a longer fic in general. As for Circe, yeah, she's a bit wacky and that's on purpose.

People tend to like my character writing yes.

Glad it works in Fate too.

Character Sheet and Plotlines.

Shirou Emiya
Good boy, crap magus. A previously relatively normal highschooler until he was thrust into a grail war. Currently attempting to save everyone he can, instead of everyone in general. A member of the archery club and a third rate magus, he may be in far over his head.

Medea of Colchis - (Shirou's Servant)
Witch with trust issues. A lot of trust issues. Slowly warming up to Shirou. Magic teacher #1

Mordred - (Shirou's Servant)
A madwoman, constantly bleeding from a gaping wound in her stomach. Doesn't say much, but is continually hunting for 'Arthur'. In battle she seems to regain some semblance of Sanity.

Circe of the Nameless Isle
Witch causing as much chaos as possible, is still alive from the Age of Gods which may or may not be a problem. Magic teacher #2

Ayako Mitsuzuri
Shirou's girlfriend, tomboy, fellow member of the archery club. May now be a magical girl.

---

Taiga Fujimura
Teacher at Shirou's school, in far, far over her head. She wasn't ever supposed to know about magic or be part of the grail war. Now she's rather injured and just trying to keep Shirou from getting himself killed.

Assassin - (Taiga's Servant)
A very friendly woman who seemingly can disappear from notice at will, seems to be plotting something or other... with Taiga specifically.

---

Sakura Matou
Childhood friend of Shirou, a quiet girl not used to being the center of attention. Was used to summon a servant for the grail war, who by all appearances killed her abusive family. Has been dealing with a lot of crap lately.

Archer - (Sakura's Servant)
A very friendly man who hasn't talked to Shirou much, but whenever he does he usually gives him some form of advice.

---

Rin Tohsaka
Sakura's sister, and a normally friendly Magus who has turned her lot in with Kotomine Kirei after several bad turns in this grail war.

Saber - (Rin's Servant)
???

---

Illya Einzbern
Shirou's sister, normally not this friendly. They only spoke briefly, but hit it off rather well.

Rider (Illya's Servant)
A tall, purple haired woman. Kidnapped Shirou once.

---

Kotomine Kirei
The local priest, as far as Shirou knows anyway. In charge of the grail war and has been very busy doing so.

Raiga Fujimura
Local mob boss, he is letting Shirou stay in his house since Shirou's house was destroyed. Has plainly told Shirou that if he doesn't handle the grail war. Raiga will.

---

Fujimaru Ritsuka

A time traveler apparently, looking for her missing servant. Has shacked up with Shirou after he stated he would help her.

---

Unknown Servants

The Monster
A beast in the guise of a man, seemingly attacks without rhyme or reason. Its master is unknown.

Brihannala
An apparent archer who attacked without warning at the church and killed over a dozen people before Shirou narrowly escaped. Her master is unknown.

---

Oberon (Annatar)
Is messing up the clock tower, the consequences of this are not known. Nor is it known if he is part of this grail war. Summoned by Marisbury Animusphere.

---

Ongoing plotlines.

  • Shirou is learning magic from Circe and Medea, both are teaching him how to be an actual Magus after Kiritsugu deliberately crippled him in that regard.
  • Shirou has TWO command seals remaining for Mordred, THREE remaining for Medea.
  • Rin has thrown her lot in with Kirei, the extent of this is unknown.
  • Berserker (Mordred) had a complete breakdown after Shirou witnessed one of her dreams.
  • There is at least two servants with unknown masters, and one is seemingly going on random rampages.
  • Fujimaru's servant is missing, they got seperated when they traveled here.
  • Annatar is doing... something in England, and it has so far affected Luvia, Kadoc, Reines, and Ophelia. Kadoc and Reines accepted rings from him.
---

Good luck young man.

Ah, I knew I was forgeting something. The Lancer who attacked Ayako's bro

This is... not something that was mentioned in-story, I don't think? Unless I've been careless.

Can't track where Kadoc has/accepts the ring.

Everything above has been mentioned in the story at this point. Just they are all in in-between chapters as they are happening concurrently with the main plot. I did not make Kadoc's ring blatant, but he has one.

Somehow Kadoc didn't register among the rest. I thought he was a part of separate plotline.

Alright then.

My dude, this entire story has been incredible. Don't change a single thing.

4.8 - Into the Forest
[X] [Find the Castle]
Thanks to @Armoury for the beta!

"Circe, are you alright?" you ask, turning your attention towards your teacher. Her arm still hung uselessly at her side from where she got clipped by that swordswoman.

Circe's eyes flit to you, and for once the smile on her face dims a little. "I shall be fine my dear pupil. Do not worry about this grand witch. What do you wish to do?"

She doesn't move to heal her arm, and you stare at her for a moment longer before looking over to Assassin and Archer. "We're going to continue looking for Illya's castle, could you two continue what you were doing?" you frown, looking past them towards the direction Rin ran off to. "We'll get nowhere chasing after her right now." Not with how powerful her servant was, you weren't in a position to deal with that at the moment, especially since it seemed Rin was no longer holding back in any capacity.

The image of that woman flashed in your mind for a moment, and you contained a grimace and a slight slump as the two servants leapt off the roof with little more than nods. Your attempts to hide any discomfort however, are apparently for naught as you feel a hand place itself upon your shoulder. Turning your head to look, you find Medea standing there, a carefully constructed expression of nothing on her face. "Master, are you alright?"

"I'm fine," you straighten yourself out. You're fine. It would do you no good at the moment to dwell on it, you should have expected this was going to continue happening. Though you very much wished it wouldn't. There was nothing you could do for that woman, nor was there anything you could do about Rin at the moment… but you would.

You feel the hand shift, and you catch Medea looking at Circe for a moment. Stepping forward, Medea wraps her arms around you and Fujimaru and leaps off the building.

In any other time, the forest would have been beautiful. Tall proud trees, old, far older than the city of Fuyuki itself surrounded the village. Small little dirt paths, frozen over ponds, and mounds of snow both on the ground and the trees decorated it. And with the sun glittering off of the white frost, it was genuinely breathtaking to see from the air. You had never flown before, at least, not from a plane. And now, seeing it without being carried by Rider? At a more sedate pace? You could honestly admit it was lovely.

You had never spent much time in the woods as a child. Kiritsugu had little interest in hiking, nor did Taiga. And with it being over four miles away from home, it was too far for you to simply wander. So, in truth, you had never much thought about the great forest that surrounded Fuyuki. Much less did you wonder about a gargantuan castle hiding within it. But as you sailed through the air, through the cold. You couldn't help but wonder why you never had. You flew just above the treetops, yourself tucked underneath Medea's right arm, while Fujimaru occupied her left. Just ahead, Sakura and Circe flew as well. Your childhood friend held snugly within Circe's wings as the witch sailed through the air. Neither witch was traveling at a particularly fast pace, partially so that you could take your time to look around, partially so that you could avoid being ambushed, and partially so the poor pitiful humans wouldn't be frozen to death by hundred mile an hour winds.

The search had been made in silence for the last half hour, your frustration mounting both from the absolutely catastrophe that was the morning, and the fact that somehow a castle was remaining hidden from you. You glance up towards Medea, the witch's eye flitting from spot to spot as she flies over the forest. She had been against this plan, but now that it had begun she was giving it her al-

"At least it's warmer than the last time I was in a place like this." Fujimaru says.

You turn to look at the other Magus. She has raised her hands to her face, rubbing them against her cheeks for a moment before clasping them underneath her armpits. "Last time?"

Fujimaru nods. "Twice… well, three times, but one didn't really count. I was stuck traipsing through Russia, then Scandinavia. Both were… less than pleasant."

"This servant must be quite dear to you to place your trust in another master so easily." Caster says, not bothering to look down.

Fujimaru's eyes flit up to the witch, then she smiles. "Yes, yes she is."

"We'll find her," you promise.

Fujimaru's smile widens, a genuine, pretty thing that almost makes the scars on her face fade away. "Thanks gramps!"

"... Gramps?" you reply, as Medea looks down at Fujimaru in confusion.

Fujimaru blinks, then she moves a hand to rub the side of her head as her cheeks flush. "Sorry, you reminded me of someone else?"

You're a taller than average athlete with bright red hair living in Japan. You get that all the time really. But you don't comment on it. "This servant of yours, what does she look like?"

Fujimaru pauses in the rubbing, and she adopts a look of relief as she realized you changed the subject. "My height, short pink hair. She carries a shield the same size she is."

Well, that will be easy to spot at the very least. Hopefully Illya knew something, it was a long shot. But you wanted to speak to her anyway, to make sure she was alright if nothing el-

Circe halted, Sakura letting out a yelp at the sudden stop. Medea herself was also stopped, a stricken look on her face. You, for your part, were barely breathing. The reason for that was quite simple. A woman was standing on the ground just below you, her long purple hair waving ever so slightly in the breeze. Around her arm was wrapped a long and winding chain, of course, while long, only a foot of it was left there, the other half, including the blade sticking out on the end of it, was wrapped around your throat.

You could feel the cold metal press against your flesh. And you forced yourself to control your breathing. If Illya's servant wanted you dead, you wouldn't live to be intimidated. How a woman dressed in purple standing in the middle of a white forest managed to be sneaky you haven't the slightest idea, but then, these servants have hardly been normal anyway.

"If you have come to see Illya, she will welcome you Shirou Emiya." Rider says calmly. "However, she would wish for you to come alone. I will not suffer a small army to intrude upon the domain of my master."

The chains then loosen, falling off of you and wrapping back around her arm. She then simply stands there, staring up at you… an odd thing considering the lack of visible eyes. Seemingly uncaring that both Medea and Circe were now pointing their weapons at her.

… This could get ugly.
