Ahaha no.

Russia vs Germany in mid-2000s isn't plausible. In fact, Russia or Germany at the time are not plausible aggressors, by virtue of being either too busy with internal messes or too well-off to rock the boat. The aggressor has to be someone interested in destroying the status quo.

I suggest picking one of the extant conflicts and spinning it out of control. For example, insert ISIS-come-early, have them acquire early magic research and have that girl be a near-kidnapped would-be unwilling test subject. Add a couple rogue intelligence agencies (Georgia, and Canada, both for added "yeah right like that could ever happen") clandestinely funding the terrorists and kidnappings, and have it happen when the girl from Poland is on German soil - with German SWAT being initially wiped out by magic or something and needing to send in military.

Then in the aftermath they find traces to various Intelligence Agencies (both true perpetrators, with added Russia, Israel and Germany and Poland itself), fingers get pointed tensions run high then BAM the first magic-based bomb explodes in the middle of talks. Or something equally outrageous that forces everyone to scramble to arms.
 
... maybe it's because I don't give a shit about geopolitics but this entire conversation seems way more complicated than it needs to be.
 
Setting aside Geopolitics for a minute I just want to point out we now have a serious explanation for why even if we broke her control seal Ichi is permanently fucked up:

Ichi died when she was thirteen years old and has spent the last five years under Ni's mindfuck effect. At this point not only has Ichi spent over a quarter of her life under the control seal it's also the part of her life she'd most clearly remember. Thanks to childhood amnesia you more or less don't remember anything from under 4 and your memories between then and 10 are a lot fewer then normal.

So roughly speaking if we say Ichi remembers nothing from before she was 4 and half her memories from 4 to 10 that means she effectively has 11 years of memories of which 5, or just under half, are of her working for the Unified Darkness. Considering I'm probably being overly generous on how much she remembers of her pre-10 days it wouldn't be unreasonable to say as far as Ichi is concerned she has spent more of her life working for the Unified Darkness and under Red's control seal then she has not.

Yeah... so despite our promise to Rei Ichi is pretty much fucked.

That Ichi would have a massive trauma to wrestle with isn't something people doubted
The problem is knowing what exactly are we dealing with.
An Ichi that close herself to anyone is different from an Ichi that pours everything into the war to ignore her psycological problem AND is different from an Ichi that just go full atrocitus on the UD ass.
Problem is...we don't know how things are on the other side, so we can just launch hypothesis, but we lack information.
The only thing we know is that it's going to be a gigantic mess.
Positive side? It's just more ammo to use against Red if we want to bring her back...

Also, you're assuming nations are going to even be approaching thinking rationally when someone actually does magic for the first time. As a whole that would kind of cause the politics to get kicked in the nuts.

Also keep in mind the OTL WWI/WWII furballs were hardly kicked off for proportionate events.

Think of it as a giant warehouse packed with loose explosives. It was ready to blow. It just needed a spark, an overreaction, and then the whole place goes boom. The trigger is not the cause.

I'm pretty sure that in the case of WW I and II the spark that set them off (The assassination of the crown prince of Austria and the invasion of Poland) is a bit more proportional to the event.

To keep with the analogy:
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand would be lighting a fuse that leads to the warehouse(chances to stop it but it wasn't stopped)
Invasion of Poland was lighting the match a few feet away from the explosives while there's a lot of gunpowder in the air(almost no chance of stopping it)

This event is like lighting a match a block away and it somehow blows up the building.

Honestly? I legit don't really care a whole lot about Geopolitics, because it's uselessly complicated to begin with.

Poland invaded Germany and kicked off WW3, a Pope was the one to convince a whole bunch of nations to help conquer the world and set up a unified government. If this break SOD, then it breaks SOD, not my fault that this has been a background detail since literally forever and no one thought to bring it up until now that I've re-worked a good part of the timeline.

Spend whatever time you want talking with each other to figure out why it happened that way, just remain civil about it.

In the meantime, vote tally in an attempt to get things moving again.

Well, it's good to see that we'll be finding out about our squad members' improvements before we go on the mission! It ought to be interesting to see what they can do now.

This is going to be my last post on the subject as CW has talked about it but there are a few steps between "HOLY SHIT MAGICS REAL THAT KID JUST LIFTED A CAR" freaking out and "Lets go attack our militarily superior ally because magic is now real"

I originally had it as Turkey invading Germany, but everyone kept saying Poland on Discord so that's why it's currently stuck on Poland.
 
I can kind of see it, basically Poland gets trumped, where Russia manages to get a lunatic they have sway over in charge. Poland come up with a scheme to use magic to let them take Germany, relying heavily on magic being an unknown unknown. Then an undeniable act of magic goes viral on YouTube, and the move up the timetable launching a week or so early. It kind of works letting them take a lot of ground with while committing a lot of warcrimes, then Germany gets it's ducks in a row and crushes them. Then they find proof linking Russia to the attack (Russia had a plan, possibly a very good one, but their plan was on the old timetable). things escalate, someone launches, and the nukes get stopped by a magical enhanced ICBM shield. then a bunch of flashpoints go off at once as people either break out secret magical weapons or make preemptive strikes for fear of the same.


the Pope thing can get reworked, it wasn't just the pope. Just about every religious figure with a congregation bigger than a few hundred gave a speech along the same lines, the same day, and so did a bunch of influential secular figures. The result is enough countries glob up in an alliance to force the rest of the world in line. A few years down the line this is marked as the most blatant of Gaia's meddling with humanity.

Still, I can't see myself bothering to take up arms to conquer Europe - nor my fellow countrymen. With the official news channels spin on the news the way it is, I'd say we're more likely to heckle you guys from the other side of the Nord Stream.

...Which, hilariously enough, connects Russia and Germany, AND (according to the Wikipedia article) whose expansion via Nord Stream 2 is opposed by both United States and Poland, which according to Rex Tillerson is considered "undermining Europe's overall energy security and stability".

Was referring to random_npc's possible explanation/expansion for the backstory where Poland attacks Germany when provoked by the first public magic use, two posts above mine.

In case my Location (under name) doesn't make it obvious, I'm Russian, and his suggestion used Russia as the mastermind behind the attack.

Supposition - the "attack on Germany by Poland in backstory" may or may not have began with exploding Nord Stream as an opening move, as an attempt to spite Russia - except Germany was the more immediately harmed party, and it was considered an "attack on Germany by Poland in backstory" instead.

This at least has more use of the contemporary country relations, as opposed to "Russia is suddenly going to conquer Europe". Not very logical on Poland's part, but spite doesn't have to be very logical.
