Chance that God himself will punish you for sacrilege with all his strength pretty low.
However, the chance of prestige loss in said culture is very high indeed.

Let's say you live in the bible belt in the USA, walk into a church and lay the smackdown on a local nun who greeted you by the altar. Now, there will probably be a people who does not care, but a lot of people would most definitely consider you scum afterwards. If you smacked down said nun and then lost, even the people who would otherwise not care would probably snigger a bit.

Rumours of a miracle being involved that specifically targeted you as a 'persona non grata' would not help.

Lung got reeeeeeeeeekt

The fallout from this will be interesting. Hopefully Taylor getting her face messed up will draw Danny into her life a bit more (just according to keikaku).

As for "cultural appropriation," that's a bunch of bullshit. I wonder if anyone got offended by the implication of GRORIOUS NIPPON RIGHT ABOUT ALL THINGS, GAIJIN RELIGION IS SHIT. Or how so far the ABB and its territory seems to be exclusively Japanese with no reference to the vast array of Asian cultures it includes. Of course I'm a straight cis white male so my word is shit.

Although it is a legitimate question as to why Amaterasu chose Taylor of all people, rather than finding a japanese youth and help them rediscover there heritage. Could be she does, as theorized earlier, want to use Taylor's race to make her following more inclusive. Could be just because Taylor's the protagonist and it's a story with Okami, so there it is. Or maybe, all those years ago, Taylor was just the one who stumbled across a shrine (or what was left of one) to Amaterasu out innawoods and Ammy responded to her cries for help.

Which leads us to question if Ammy here actually is an exclusively "Japanese" spirit or if she's a more all-encompassing mother/solar/nature/etc deity who happens to be manifesting in her Japanese incarnation due to various factors, such as the high presence of Japanese refugees in Brockton Bay.

Or, y'know, this is just a crossover with a video game that uses Japanese mythology and we should stop overthinking it and just give Ammy belly rubs.
I believe that A sun goddess once did exist in Korean and Chinese shamanism/culture.
It just due to the influence of buddhism and confucianism, the idea of a sun goddess became unacceptable.
In japan, the idea of a sun goddess survived and was accepted due to Japan isolation as a island and it unique culture

I believe this was answered a few pages ago.

Constellations (Worm/Okami) | Page 28

The entire race and heritage thing? Not necessary. Taylor doesn't know squat, but that doesn't matter.

If anything, heritage is a crutch. Imagine Jesus coming down and picking an earnest Westboro Baptist Church member (or frankly, even the Pope). The person's preconceptions on what christianity should and shouldn't be is just going to get in the way.

Emma: And what's with the bruised cheek? Did those ABB thugs hit you when you refused to whore for them?
Taylor: Actually, Lung did this.
*Everyone stops laughing*
Taylor: And then he got hit by lightning.
*Some girl screamed in the background. It turned out to be a guy in ABB colors pointing at them with a shivering finger*
*Other ABBs saw them, screamed as well, and stampeded away*
....
...
*The silence ... It was deafening*

Then turn of events got even more bizarre as the next day, every ABB member who crossed path with Taylor in school kept bowing to her while saying "Good morning, Miko." reverently.

Kenta/Lung is gonna get up and try to walk back into the shrine. He is Lung, he's been challenged, meeting the challenge is what he does.

Ammy in full "Shiranui" mode should be waiting for him with the komainu on either side of her. Bonus points if he realises the Sun disc on her back is The Yata no Kagami

Kenta gets to realise things. 1st thing he gets to realise, he got off easy with a lightning bolt.
2nd thing he gets to realise, time for Dogeza.

She's the goddess of the sun: being in America probably only requires that the sun rise over it. Which I believe is still a pretty regular occurrence.
[citation needed]

If Blackwell tried to punish Emma based on circumstantial evidence then Alan would kick up a stink and threaten to sue them for defamation or something to that effect.
Yeah, but (as noted by others) he's a divorce lawyer. Not a REAL lawyer. He's one (tiny) step above ambulance chasers.

Yes, but when that much shit is flying it tends to attract reporters and then all the shit is out in the open for everyone to smell, and when that happens even the winner is a loser covered in shit.
Remember what I always say about wrestling with pigs: The pig just enjoys it, you end up covered in mud, and your cousin Cletus gets pissed because you're messing with his special lady.

Better just to not bother.

Huzzah!

"I have never witnessed her acting as a parahuman does." The same answer, each time Lung asked. The same uncharacteristic evasion, from one who never lied or hid truth from him.
Well, to be FAIR, it can be really awkward to explain to your boss that someone isn't a parahuman... just a miko. No, seriously, I think she's actually serving a goddess, who's a dog. Yes, I said dog. Well... not a dog, but more a wolf? ...why are you staring at me like that? You asked!

Planting trees and renovating buildings-- a more obvious message would be difficult to create.
Yes. How dare she try to make the world a better place. She's a monster. </deadpan>

If she was a scavenger, come to chew at his demesne, then she would not be given the option of walking away.
*glances ahead*
*starts cackling at the irony*

They pressed on in silence, the driver, the dragon, and the demon.
So, do you think that driver is laid back? I think he's probably super relaxed right now. (Because he's gone all the way through panic and out the other side.)

Lung squinted in his mask-- a book of fables. Useless.
A-ha! Taylor's doing research!

Lung rumbled, deep in his chest. He could appreciate some spine
I've shipped people for LESS, just sayin'....

"You can't answer me, and that is why you have no claim here. This shrine does not belong to you, it belongs to the people of this city. And this city does not belong to you, because you do not belong to it. You take, but never give."
Hmmm, Taylor's gone for an armor piercing question and an explanation of fact. I wonder if Lung will see the truth behind her words and maybe reevaluate his choices in life or at least decide someone who can stand up to him like this isn't unworthy of a little respect?

The back of Lung's hand met the girl's cheek which a resounding crack,
...or he could do that. That's certainly an option. It's not an option *I* would have gone for, given that she's besties with AMATERASU, but... it's certainly AN option.

"This insult... will not be borne." Lung seethed.
You are... 100% correct. Yes. This is a completely factual statement.

Lightning crashed down, a single bolt from a cloudless sky. It struck Lung's metal mask with a burst of light and sound,
100% correct.

Lung rolled to a stop, heart stuttering and pounding as if by overdose.
Ooooh, look at that neat little parallel between this and his original Trigger! That was nice, UnwelcomeStorm. I liked that.

Yuh-huh. Totally by choice. It's not that he can't stand up on his own. He's just LETTING other people help him, that's all.

Let's see, I had a song for this.... OH, RIGHT.

she may yet turn the gangs of Brockton Bay into basically just really racist competing homeowners' associations.
So... homeowner's associations, then.

...don't look at me like that. HOA's are the scum of the fucking earth and you all know it.

The apparent lack of multiculturalism in the ABB is less GLORIOUS NIPPON, more we've only met three regular gang members/hopefuls, one blank slate, and Lung. Of those three kids (Yuuta, Souta, and Haru) only Yuuta was even brought up in a traditionally-leaning household.

As for why Taylor specifically? There are reasons, though most are still currently spoilers. There's been fun speculation about it though, such as:
1)Khepri is also a sun god, associated with the rising sun and rejuvenation
2)Taylor made a pact of sorts with Ammy by giving her that friendship bracelet
3)Six degrees of separation. Taylor is (or will/would be) in a position to be socially linked to a lot of different people in a lot of different areas of the city. It makes her a nice hub to start with.

On the subject of other religions... correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Shinto is one of the few faiths that openly acknowledges and accepts all other faiths and mythologies. Shinto is meant to be compatible with basically anyone.

I have to agree with this, telling someone their grass is to tall but they can't cut it themselves in their own time, no they have to use the service or do it when they would normally be at work. Hates HOA's we do

I've heard that as well.

Off the top of my head, it showed up in the Ryukaza quest when a Catholic priest was able to act as a full-fledged and recognized priest in Japan without any issue when it would be pretty much anywhere else apparently. And the GM to that one certainly sounds and feels like she did her research.

*Shrug*

Shinto acknowledged the Catholics when they first arrived in Japan for what they were, a group who believe in one specific god whose son was an aspect of himself and said we should all be nice to each other or go to he'll.
The shogunate however felt that it undermined the authority of their government as ordained by the god emperor and had them burned on arrival when they started trying to convert the samurai class and the peasantry and make them all one equal merchant consumers class to sell to and buy Asian products cheaply from.

Shinto IS a faith who believe everything have their own god/spirit/kami, from the Sun, to the grain of sand, even have multiple god for same thing. So yeah they pretty much quite accepting. But ehh Japan isolationism is abit affect it, so yeah there's that.

Lightning crashed down, a single bolt from a cloudless sky. It struck Lung's metal mask with a burst of light and sound, crackled its electric teeth over his spine and down his limbs, and tossed him from the cobblestone path. Not a single blade of grass was singed. Lung rolled to a stop, heart stuttering and pounding as if by overdose. The bright flash of plasma had blinded him, his ears were numbed by ringing, and for a moment he was face down in his death.
The Mandate of Heaven has spoken!
PHO will be buzzing with rumors. Lung is taken down in a single strike? And he retreated? Preposterous!
If they find out he got struck by lightning, some of them would except it. No man-made object comes at all close to the voltage produced from a single lightning bolt.
Lighting doesn't seem like Ammy's thing, though. Her brother Susano-o, maybe.

I don't remember being able to do the whole Zeus thing when I played.
You could get a special ink spell that would cause a lightning bolt to strike the ground in front of you (even indoors) after finishing a side quest. I can't remember how the side quest went.

Japanese that are in BB are there when they all fled Japan after Kyushu was slam dunked into the pacific by Levaithan.

Hold on, isn't Brockton Bay on the east coast? Why would Japanese refugees flee to the east coast? You'd think that the west coast is closer and more easily accessible, since in real life the west coast has cities that are almost entirely Asian dominated, plus places like San Francisco, with huge and historic Chinatown districts.

...What?

Beat Ryoshima Coast's postman in a race, get a Gear from him, Go to Clock Tower in Heian City, climb it, meet crazy old scientist, give him the gear, get upgrade.

In North Carolina there are quite a number of cities with sizable Vietnamese populations. I think because their families were originally refugees from the Vietnam War. So it really doesn't surprise me refugees from Japan could end up on the East Coast.

If you want to break your brain further, Brockton Bay specifically is home to the largest Nazi gang in the country with a very strong and violently racist power base. And someone thought bringing in Asian refugees there was a good plan.

But was that the case when the refugees came there? Or did the presence of so many non-white refugees cause a relatively minor Nazi gang to gain a larger power base?

No, I just googled it Kyushu happened in 1999 and Theo Anders was born around 1997, as he was 15 in 2011. Given his grandfather was a parahuman long enough to bud twice, presumably E88 was at least a few years old when Kyushu happened.
