It kind of astounds me how much lip we're getting. On one level I'm glad they're not so afraid that they aren't willing to work with us, but weren't these guys gossiping about blood magic and SD's specialty baby soup not even a week ago?

You'd think we'd have more problems getting them to stop being terrified yes men long enough to be useful instead of being mouthy.

The Reach was absorbed in other things. Fey things.

Granted, after slaughtering the Fey's high nobility, you'd think they would no longer be distracted, and instead very much focused on us instead.

But. It's Westeros. 🤷‍♂️

Explains everything.

Every large enough group of people contains one complete moron. The debate is not about the truthfulness of that statement, but about what constitutes "large enough".

It just feels worse here than in Essos because over there, the argument that they would have offered would have been along the lines of "the slave doesn't know what to do with himself, so I will keep him". So these people tended to... disappear rather quickly...

Wait, there's going to be something even better than letters going straight into the fireplace in private; the letters sent to places we now control talking about us in an antagonistic tone.
Probably not a lot of them, depending on the location, but enough to make it entertaining to have a functionary return them to the senders wrapped in a note on inquisitorial letterhead.

Right now, there are probably dozens of suddenly treasonous messages in flight through the skies of Westeros, born aloft by hapless ravens who don't know they might be bringing doom down on a bunch of Westerosi nobles.

Good times.

The Vale will have the worst of it, what with us taking the Eyri and quite a few lords probably trying to message them.

I don't think many Lannister adjacent people in the Crownlands expected any help from the Red Keep.

@Azel
Could you reduce Shaitan Elite by one Psychic Damage?
The handfull of mages between them doesn't justify more than one and they'd be closer to the Eternal Guard.

To the Honorable Lord Donniger,

I think that this belongs to you.

With Benevolent Forethought,

- Rex Imperator

  • [X] Plan Reasoning
    -[X] House Meadows
--[X] Grant the land to Grassy Vale to make it a self-governing city with city charter.
--[X] The current mayor will continue to serve in that function, taking over the powers of the lordship in accordance with the Imperial Constitution.
--[X] In the future, the Mayor will be elected by the Council in the first session after their election.
--[X] Since the first election of Voices needs to be arranged and the lawmen and bureaucrats need to be appointed and will be busy for a while, the election of the new Mayor will be postponed. It will be held 6 months after the first session of the Council to ease the transition period.
    -[X] House Roxton
--[X] Keep the town under Imperial administration.
    -[X] Reasoning:
--[X] This step might seem bewildering to some in Westeros, much like how the hereditary nobles you landed in Essos have been to the magisters there. The lordships of Westeros are not the city states of Essos after all. However, the magisters have seen the wisdom in those actions after some time and likewise will nobles see the wisdom of self-governing cities.
--[X] That is the promise of the Imperium. Not change for changes sake, but to improve upon what exists with measured steps. There is much that Essos and Westeros can learn from each other and if all citizens work together, pooling their experiences and knowledge, then the sum will become much greater than the constituent parts.
--[X] If somebody still has the balls and the lack of brains to openly complain, flatly tell them that the best insurance against having your fiefs seized by the crown or allowed to self-govern is to not be a traitor. There are many lords who have found not-being-a-traitor to be an overall good strategy.
[X] Grant them out to Grassy Vale as hinterlands for a self-governing town
[X] Keep them under Imperial administration.
[X] Grant them out to Grassy Vale as hinterlands for a self-governing town
    [X] Probation period.
    -[X] House Meadows
--[X] As a gesture of encouragement for assisting the forces of the Imperium, we will transfer the lands of House Meadows to the management of Grassy Vale city.
---[X] But in six months, an audit of his actions will be conducted by the city administration and Lewys Cobbler personally.
----[X] If his actions are deemed ineffective, the city will lose control of the lands, and we will find a lord for them.
----[X] If his actions are found to be effective, the position will be permanently fixed.
----[X] Well, if Lewys Cobbler manages to impress us with his success, then we can even grant him the status of a full-fledged lord, which will be fixed for his descendants.
-----[X] With this decision, we're kind of showing the lords of Westeros that we're listening to their comments. But at the same time, we point out that we primarily value the skills of an administrator in landowners, and we can easily grant the status of an aristocracy to a third-party merchant if he does well with the duties assigned to him.
    -[X] House Roxton
--[X] Keep them under Imperial administration.
    [X] Probation period.

Part MMMDCCXXV: Those Near at Hand
Those Near at Hand

First Day of the Fifth Month 294 AC

Not how you had expected to hand off your first city charter, but you are not going to say no to the opportunity to introduce the court to another of the changes Imperial rule will bring. Might as well make it memorable. With a flourish you cast a golden stylus in the air only for it to shift into the serpentine form of your arcane assistant midair. Already informed of what it was to do, the Calligraphy Wyrm catches the parchment and flies to a nearby table under the stoic... mostly stoic gazes of the Legion officers, though a few are fighting smiles not so much at the sight of the little golden dragon but at the expressions of the lords in attendance.

Blessed with arcane haste and a perfect memory of what it is supposed to look like, the diminutive scribe finishes writing up the charter in the space of only ten long breaths before flying over to deliver it into the hands of a bewildered Lewys Cobbler who upon reading the first line almost drops it in shock.

"A charter for Grassy Vale, Goodman. You shall take over the powers of the lordship in accordance with the Imperial Constitution," you explain for the court at large as much as for him. "In the future, the Mayor will be elected by the Council in the first session after their election. As the first election of Voices shall have to be arranged and the lawmen and bureaucrats need to be appointed and will be busy for a while, the election of the new Mayor will be postponed. It will be held six months after the first session of the Council to ease the transition period."

The next look you take around the expressions of those attending is more revealing than they would likely wish. It seems that few indeed beyond Lady Merryweather had actually read the Constitution, and of those who did fewer still put much stock in it. The Law to them was not so far removed from what it is to Dalla and her kin, though they would likely be insulted at the comparison. Little more than an emanation of the present whims of the ruler moderated by tradition and precedent in theory, by the threat of rebellion in practice.

"The lands that fell under the domain of House Roxton shall fall under the administration of the Imperial Crown from this present moment," you continue after the mayor had withdrawn, shock already giving way to calculation in his eye, no doubt considering how he might win the election and retain his present dignity and all the advantages that come with it.

After allowing that bit of news to sink in as deep as it will go, you expand upon your reasons in plain terms. "That is the promise of the Imperium. Not change for change's sake, but to improve upon what exists with measured steps. There is much that Essos and Westeros can learn from each other, and if all citizens work together, pooling their experiences and knowledge, then the sum will become much greater than the constituent parts."

Of course, a promise might be a threat by another name from a certain point of view, but none see fit to call you out on it thankfully. It seems that most of the lords present are if not content with your judgement at least not inclined to be the first to speak up on the matter for now.

Last to be judged are those lords nearest to the Red Keep, those who had most directly served your family of old and whose betrayals are perhaps the hardest to excuse. No overlord led them in rebellion, and no one pressed them to take Lannister gold and Baratheon honors, not to mention that many of the first lords to swear an oath to you are among the same ranks and some of them have claims to the lands of their less than loyal kin. Lord Rampton of Rosehouse and Lord Sunglass of Sweetport Sound both surrendered after a warning shot, whereas House Byrch of the Bywater is in a contested succession with the lord deposed by his own wife in favor of his son. Lord Edgerton had the misfortune of being caught with his pants literally down in the storming of the Red Keep, still a better fate than Lord Gyles Rosby who could be counted a true traitor by his attempted flight.

Most of the remainder of the lords of the Crownlands surrendered upon word of the fall of the Red Keep reaching them sometimes on the lips of their own kin, though you have at least one traitor to deal with at Rosby, and one very reluctant surrender at Hayford that might need seeing to.

  1. Lord Rampton of Rosehouse -> Surrendered after warning shot
  2. Lord Sunglass of Sweetport Sound -> Surrendered after warning shot
  3. House Byrch of the Bywater -> Contested succession; old lord in custody
  4. House Edgerton of Highridge -> Lord surrendered in the Red Keep
  5. House Cressey of Goatsgreen -> Surrendered after word of King's Landing's fall arrived
  6. House Harte of Farwood -> Surrendered after word of King's Landing's fall arrived (Second son of the lord enthusiastic about Praetori)
  7. House Hayford of Hayford -> Surrendered after word of King's Landing's fall arrived and a warning shot was given
  8. House Stokeworth of Stokeworth -> Did not surrender until outer fortifications were reduced; later divinations revealed that the lady of the House was under and enchantment
  9. House Chelsted of Corktown -> Surrendered after word of King's Landing's fall arrived

How do you judge the Crownlanders?

OOC: After this it is just a bit in the Westerlands, and we can wrap up the immediate post-conquest clean up.

@DragonParadox what is the average level of a Westerosi knight ? , as those knights are likely one of the few redeeming factors of the nobility as medieval knights begin their training at the age of 6 up to the point were they can squire under a proper full knight for a period of time gaining experience before becoming a full knight themselves , form that point forward the knight spends his time serving a lord doing stuff like hunting bandits and enforcing his will , fighting in wars and participating in tourneys couple all that with the fact that a knight will have the best access to food , training and equipment his house can afford while growing up I would put most westerosi knights between level 5 at minimum and level 10 at most with the most talented and accomplished breaking past the level 10 bottleneck . all in all a solid foundation to set up some paladin orders to channel all those knights into something truly worth while

I love our Calligraphy Wyrms. Best assistants ever.

@DragonParadox, did Bloodraven leave his dragonpen with his real body or did he bring it with his new Praetorian body?
