Huh. So it looks like the fye managed some sort of curse so powerful that it actually managed to effect the thread.

Hope you guys have cold iron handy, it looks like we're going to need it.:V

@Azel, anything in particular we want for invading Westeros and the follow-up crusade peacekeeping not currently available and on the above list either?
Now's the last time to craft beforehand.

Part MMMDCLXXVII: Precipitous Flight
Precipitous Flight

Seventeenth Day of the Fourth Month 294 AC

There are some reports you receive with joy, some with quiet appreciation, some with frustration and others that merit a long suffering sigh. Then there are those for which the people involved should be commended which still awaken a dull ache behind your temples which no magic you know of can quite stymie.

Perestan. A name that is scattered over dozens of Inquisition reports and other writings that do not even have a formal standing because no one who is against all forms of divination for a moment may read them. Still, for all the headaches this causes Ceria and her companions performed their task admirably and should be congratulated for it.

Even beyond the discovery of the far-traveling archmaester fey willing to work for something as commonplace as coin are not to be dismissed, especially as your conversation with the virulently acerbic Swift-Eye revealed how exactly he was able to function as an information dealer in Oldtown of all places. The flickering sprite is far more adept than Ceria's initial estimation of him implied, based you suspect on her first meeting with the quickling years ago.

Swift Eye's Class Revealed: Quickling 4/Rogue 1/Trapsmith 1/Swiftblade 8

"Legends grow slow in the shadows Dragon King, but they grow true. You know it better than most, do you not?" he asks, trying to needle you.

"Yes, I do know quite a lot about shadows and what can be done therein," you reply, fixing him with eyes sharpened until you can follow his uncanny swiftness. To tell the truth if Swift-Eye were anything other than one of the fey who must keep the to letter of their word onto pain of Unnaming you would hesitate hiring anyone with his temperament and especially his deeds.

Fortunately you have experts in writing contracts to bind for eternity on hand these days. Your expression does not outwardly shift when you introduce the quickling to Malzreth the harbinger and two of his entourage of legal scholars, but you suspect the devil himself understands the sentiment.

"How much are you willing to pay for the services of these entities, Your Grace?" he asks punctiliously.

Alas, Swift-Eye is able to shed scant light on the business of Archmaester Perestan. Firstly he acquired a month and a day of the karek's services, either because he believed he would return in that time or because the charade would not serve him beyond that date. Secondly the archmaester arrived at the meeting in some disarray, having broken his own chain, hence the origin of the link that first alerted your agents to his presence. According to the alp who 'got the best sniff of him' his despair tasted sweet.

"So we are not only hunting a man who cannot be divined, part and party to a mad conspiracy to muzzle all magic, but also one who feels his back is to the wall," Zherys interrupts your account. "I must confess the prospect of chasing down a lady of the fey through the depths of her realm suddenly seems more pleasant by comparison."

"There is a bit more to follow up on," you explain. "Swift-Eye has heard Archmaester Perestan had contacts with the Azure fey, what is now the Azure Court. Apparently he was seeking a comprehensive solution for the darkness below the High Tower as far back as Lord Leyton's death. He attempted to broker a comprehensive exchange of knowledge, but the trade fell through apparently according to the intransigence of the maesters."

"Just knowledge, or did the maesters want to go somewhere by the fey paths?" Maelor asks thoughtfully. "Maybe he decided to make a runner now that there are fewer eyes on the paths..."

"Which gets us no closer to knowing where the bastard went," Ser Richard rumbles. "Do we ask the blue fey or try to track him from where Criston and his lost tracked him?"

"Or perhaps we should first reveal the false archmaester first," Amrelath offers darkly. "Chaos among our foes can only serve us well and such a revelation would be nigh impossible to trace us if done well."

What do you do next?

[] Speak to the Azure Key about Perestan

[] Try to track the archmaester through the Feywild

[] Reveal the karek in archmaester's robes

OOC: I have a sheet for Swift-Eye too for next month. I was expecting to run him as an enemy.

I have an idea for dealing with the deep ones new anti undead stuff: adding Bonethorn and bonethorn style creatures to our units.

Binethorns in particular are nice since they are actively fueled by positive energy effects, but are pricy at CR 12. The basic idea of stealth undead lookalikes is still good though, and doesn't seem too unreasonable given the various experts we have on hand.

Then we slap an at will item or SLA of Misdirection on them and force the attackers to expend as much effort as possible in picking apart our defensive groups. It's not perfect, but it requires them to start checking before deploying specialized weapons and possibly add another set to handle them.

Stuff like that will make it more expensive and frustrating to play these games with us, which is ultimately the best protection we have with the number of enemies we've got.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

@Crake, iirc the Misfits fought the Swift-Eye in your omakes ot something?
Could ya please remind me what's his overall personality like?

I wanna know how much we can trust him in general, and trust to not fuck up delicate tasks specifically.

A CR14 stealth-oriented PC-Fey is a nice addition to some tasks.
Like Slavers' Bay. Or Qohor. Or establishing a staging ground in Feywild. Or researching the Crucible. Etc.

Holy crap, Swift Eye is a Trapsmith. Their spell list is painfully limited, but there are some great options there, and at a very low level compared to normal spellcasting. It needs a 5th level Rogue or something very similar to meet the entry requirements, but we probably have some of those in the Inquisition by now. If Swift Eye could teach our people enough to gain the Trapsmith PRC, that would be great.

@DragonParadox, I'm assuming that his Swiftblade spellcasting builds off his Trapsmith magic?

Evil and I love it.

1) Well, he doesn't care about your desire to conquer the world, but simultaneously I mean that literally, he really doesn't mind that you intend to subjugate the entire world and place it under Imperial Law. If other entities feel like rebelling against the status quo, more power to them, but if they are content to lose themselves to the rhythm of order, then they are boring and none of his concern.

2) Swifty apparently has a group, so he's struck by the usual Fey desire to have some company and structure rather than operating alone. Placing him in an organization isn't impossible.

3) Swifty doesn't care about some chimeric idea like the intrinsic value of human life. He really does feed into the whole NPC and PC concept to the worst order--but because he does, if he feels you deserve personhood by being interesting, he is far, far more forgiving of failure, mistakes, slip-ups and foibles. That just makes you flawed, and the best characters are flawed. That's why he didn't kill the Misfits even though he really could have. They were somewhere between "train wreck" and "garbage fire" with respect to their issues when he met them, but with hope for growth.

4) Swifty's impatient to get to the next interesting thing, but he will always see what he's doing currently through to the end. If he found it interesting at first, he'll find it interesting until then, and his level of spite for something getting in his way can be legendary. If he gains a foe like a devil or a group of plucky adventurers, he will make sure their defeat is total and if they walk away it's with the taste of ashes on their tongue.

He can be compelled to kill "interesting" people, but your reasoning better be good. Best to frame it in the context of what you hope to do in the wake of their death given that person's own goals contrasted with yours.

Most of the above is inferred, mind you, @DragonParadox might have something more to add.
