Part MMMDCLXXIV: Reports from The Iron Isles
Reports from the Iron Islands

Tenth Day of the Fourth Month 294 AC

Convenient as having someone else pouring gold into the Iron Islands would doubtless be you decide in the end against interfering. If other lords were to discover that you had meddled in how a lady choose to raise her heirs it would doubtless raise their hackles and not without cause you must admit. You have been beating the drum of 'keep whatever recognized faith you will' for years now and both the Faith of the Seven and the Ferryman fit the proverbial shoe. Asha can see to her household as she wishes.

Alas, the remedy to what ails her realm is not so evident.

A Blow From the Depths: Rodrik the Reader has been the target of an assassination attempt, though not one cloaked in silence and secrecy. Rather Pyke came under attack by psychic amalgamations forged from the thoughts of fanatic Drowned Men and their followers. The alchemically preserved brains had been slipped into the keep by shapechanging infiltrators among the staff over the course of months and only attained full 'awakening' when called forth by some sign in the skies or the subtle movement of the earth. Their birth screams alone slew more than half the flesh forged servitors meant to protect the Reader.

Worse, the creatures proved particularly adept at slaying Black Knights, able to reduce them to dust in a flash of golden radiance. Fortunately they were simply not prepared for the sheer number of the dead the Regent of Pyke had on call after the previous attempt on his life. The agents of the Deep Ones ran out of sorcery, or mental focus as Jeyne names it, before the defenders ran out of corpses to throw into the fray. According to Ser Harras the enemy could have retreated then, but perhaps unsurprisingly having their brains extracted and forged into unnatural amalgamations of hate and rage did not endow them with great tactical insights.

41x Spitters
29x Black Knights
1x Vigilant Hunter
6x Vigilant Briars

By tooth and Claw: At the same time several Deep One leviathans flanked by their own flesh forged escorts attacked the most powerful of your undersea groups head on in what Qyburn judges was a probing action, getting the measure of the opposition in ways that the dry calculus of foresight cannot match. The clash ended with an enemy retreat behind a cloud of inky darkness conjured from below after failing to match the tireless strength of the dead krakens, though much like last month's attack on the Reader gave way to a much more serious continuation you have no doubt the enemy is learning and improving.

2x Snatching Terrors
3x Bloodsharks
8x Paralyzing Snatchers
19x Aquatic Spitter Swarms

Victory, especially the victory at Pyke where the corpses of the dead were not lost to the sea's depths, leaves you with something of a conundrum, what to do with the remains of sixty three psionically activated brains touched by not only the Far Realm but the will of the Deep Ones dreadful guiding intellect. You are tempted to give your own flesh-smiths the use of them, but the reminder of the last incident involving such research materials makes you wary.

What do you do with the remains form the Iron Islands?

[] Feed them into the Flesh Forge

[] Preserve them for future use

[] Destroy them

[] Write in

OOC: No loss of molds this time around, the enemy did not have the best rolls, including this. What is it with your enemies and rolling 2s?

Okay. Looks like the Deep Ones have the same thoughts as us. War is on the horizon.
Might be time to renew our contract with those mercenaries we hired, then. They'll be needed.

@egoo

We should replace and expand the Iron Isles forces, and we should think about expanding their capabilities with different options to keep the Deep Ones from adapting.

Thankfully all our under-the-table diplomacy means that the pacification of the Western Provinces is going to be a swift affair. I shudder to think the loses we could suffer if our Cold War against the Deep Ones became hot while trying to militarily subjugate an entire continent.

Can we get anything useful out of those brains if we analyze them? Because if not I say burn the lot in a sacrifice to the Ferryman and be done with it.

We already have psionics unlocked and have made considerable strides in that area, so adding them for the sake of loot seems unnecessary.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, @DragonParadox.

We also have a deal about working together with the Gith I think?
As far as I can't remember they can't go army-strenght without risking their efforts in Nirvana, but they can help somewhat.

We have a deal with the Gith for a large strike force, including 4 PCs which are Companion tier (Grandmasters in their terms).

Additionally we have a deal worked out with an older Brine dragon and his troll army.

[X] Preserve them for future use
-[X] Each brain or body will be put in a custom, separate Necro-Case, which will then be encased in lead and safely stored on one of the vaults of the Imperial Palace. Among them will be a few decoy cases filled with Wildfyre.

Do we have plans for these, then?

Whew, the Deep Ones have a nice anti-Undead unit in those Ergregores. Too bad for them they aren't all that good against hordes of Undead. If they could use Heal as an at will ability rather than capping out at no more than four uses per day, they would be a serious threat.

They do have at will cure moderate wounds, so still pretty strong.

One of our first moves when we finaly start the pacification should be to send Anti-Illithid Task Forces to the Iron Isles and other important locations vulnerable to them. I really don't think our truce is going to last to the end of next month.
