Secrets of the Trade
Sixteenth Day of the First Month 294 AC
"Are we? I'm afraid we are mostly here to have a chat with you and see what we can learn about your
esteemed colleagues." The last two words are said with the same inflection Qyburn would use, or at least a fair approximation thereof. A lifetime's scorn is not an easy thing to copy. "Should this be your worry, then let me assure you that the Dragon is perfectly content to leave people be, if they afford him the same courtesy. However, you do not strike me as a person who would be content to watch things unfold from a manse in Armun Kelisk, even though you likely could secure one for yourself."
The archmaester's eyes gleam with more than the light of the flickering lantern. Ambition has as familiar light all of its own and so does greed. "Armun Kelisk," he muses. "How far the Dragon King reaches beyond even his swift grasp to count the whole world his, from the burning sands of the Red Waste to the forests of Mossovy."
"However, I will admit, there are plenty who found his bribes quite tempting. Access to the finest laboratories. Ample funds for whatever research they fancy. A library that knows few if any equals on this plane. All things that have tempted many and all he expected in return is for them to share their knowledge freely with him." You pause and lower your voice ever so slightly. "The question is what you want to do with your future."
To your surprise the archmaester replies in draconic, low and hissing, guessing perhaps that Corlys Waters would either know the common trade tongue of the Inner Spheres or have some magic to translate it. "I want what should be
mine by right of the ring, rod and mask I bear, the contents of the deep vaults." Returning to Common he adds: "Instead of fools doing more harm than good with all that is hoarded there against the threat of the world's darkening."
"What manner of tomes?" Kira asked, her 'mother's' curiosity shinning through clear as day.
"I do not know for certain, for Perestan and his ilk do not ordinarily bring them out. The one time I managed to smuggle one out..."
"
I managed to smuggle one out," Sari points out loudly, though without any bite to her words.
"Regardless, now is not the time to be reminiscing of such things," Vargo interjects so quickly you suspect there is rather more than theft behind it all. "Certainly no time to bend the knee, Marwyn, no matter how sweet you find the words for there is no king to bow to here."
If only he knew. "You mentioned something about the Lannisters?" you prompt.
"Lore for lore I would trade," the archmaester of magic replied. "Tell me Braavosi, how was the House of Black and White brought to heel and by what pacts did they retain their arts through the long waning? Surely the Dragon King must have informed your lord."
What do you reply?
[] Offer him an account of how the House of Black and White operated and what agreement it has reached with the realm
[] Trade some other piece of lore

OOC: And here we are, a bit short but hopefully with an engaging enough vote.
