A tourney lance is for breaking, not killing. I am fairly sure they have to be inherently flawed so that they do break on strong contact.

While a Essosi smith will make fun of Richard for enjoying the barbaric art of "hitting shit with flawed lances", banning him from a cultural past time is probably not something he will actually do when it has no real stakes involved.

A magic item is not a fundamentally rational actor.
I remember DP writing at some point around our first attack on a Deep One holding that literally everything should be mastercrafted, even slingshot-ammo.
That was when we were contemplating the use of improvised lances for shark-riding against the Squids.

He might have to bow out if he can't convince Oathkeeper, then, but we'll find out next update from @DragonParadox. The conceit of the whole thing is that it can't be a "masterwork lance" even if we could just fabricate a dozen for Richard. Either Oathkeeper will let him joust (tourney lances are usually highly regulated in this era, except in the dramatic moments where they are not, and that is literally only because the gamesmasters were absolutely shit at their job or woefully complicit in murder) or Oathkeeper will not and we will move past it. The lances have to be breakable, with ease, rigid varieties are lethal inherently. Even the breakable ones can be sorta lethal if used improperly.

It seems petty and cruel to ban his wielder from jousting though. This is the Westerosi pasttime.

Although, since it's Ser Richard we're talking about, I'm gonna let my disgust of the Invaders' culture aside and root for the Stormlander.

I'm not gonna fuss over it, I guess, though I don't understand how they would have a flawless construction when their construction is supposed to be inherently flawed. In fact if this comes up in character as anything less than what I just pointed out, I'm in favor of glossing over all of it as it doesn't satiate my need to watch dudes in tin cans hit each other really fucking hard for laughs and applause.

They're flawless tourney lances. They will be masterwork for their designated purpose.

They're not masterwork in way a proper wartime lance is, they won't be robust and sturdy with the intent to scythe through lines of men, these are literally made to shatter on impact.

Masterwork tourney lances will break exquisitely. 👌
 
Masterwork safe lances?

Like how modern cars fold like paper on purpose to make sure the driver is still alive instead of the car being intact?

  • [X] Ser Richard will perform on a Warhorse trained in the Royal Stables to take well to his commands, in masterwork hardened barding to reduce the chances of injury, and he will have his usual talismans at hand to both heal himself or anyone else who gets hurt grievously by accident or otherwise as he will be closer to such an event than the fey healers will be--but he won't use any overt magic otherwise. If someone tries to accuse him of cheating it will be clear to see that he is likely even less well armed, using normal tourney lances, than some of the knights taking the field. This is a more important event and none shall say he won by trickery... well, no more trickery than the guise he bears.
    -[X] You on the other hand will be ready for anything, and hopefully delivering a masterful performance as his "squire" and as a bard.

Well he did earn it taking out the trash, so he can't reasonably expect too high of a prize. :V

Seriously though; while that's not much when compared to the budget of our military industrial complex, for personal luxuries that's a good amount of money.

Edit: this is totally unrelated, but has anyone IC noticed that Richard is now immortal? Mythic ranks are easier to notice than the particular skills they grant unless they're obvious in use. I find the idea that Richard stabbed so hard he defeated death, and that no one is going to notice until someone remembers that he's human, hilarious.

Future!Viserys: ... wait Richard, aren't you mostly human? How have you been extending your lifespan?
Future!Richard: Don't know; I've been too busy to get old and the stranger hasn't made me stab him yet, so I didn't really think about it.

Richard will just be hanging around, forever, and no one will question it. Why wouldn't Ser Richard live forever? It's Ser Richard, after all!

Seriously though, Viserys has mentioned off-hand that he can 'feel' his mythic ranks in the form of how his power has intertwined with the Imperium. I imagine that if you pressed Ser Richard, he'd admit that his relationship with combat has definitely gone strange. But he doesn't bring it up because... well, it's Richard. He isn't going to voluntarily engage in any lengthy discussions about the nature of magic unless it poses a legitimate danger or is otherwise important.

If growing old started to threaten Richard's ability to perform his duties, he'd bring it up. Since it isn't an issue, it isn't worthy of concern.

Age is no longer an issue for Richard. His latest Mythic rank came with the Longevity power. He is now biologically immortal.

He hasn't mentioned it to anyone yet right? I wonder if he plans to do so, or just quietly continue on until someone says something about it.

It probably won't be noticeable for decades since the ability stops the deleterious effects of aging, but not necessarily the cosmetic effects up to the point of damage.
