@Goldfish, the Ancient Nightmare Dragons are definitely a good reason for the Moonchaser to open fire. It's not as if it's cannons are a secret we need to keep or it's standard ammo limited.
Thanks for the reminder. I actually intended to include a mention of the Moonchaser attacking in the same line where I covered the Wyverns, but forgot it. It's been added.
That should not work on dragons.
They are beyond sin and divine judgement, at least that particular form of it.
I certainly won't complain if it can affect Dragons, though in this case the Dragon's appropriate afterlife is probably right back into Tiamat's hoard.

Yeah, I didn't want to venture a comment because I'm not fully read up on the details, but I am somewhat worried that while the battle is going on, all of Tiamat's currently off screen assets are being quietly shuffled off to various bolt holes.

While that is a possibility, it's a fairly unlikely option for Tiamat to choose. She's so full of hate and pride, and we've pissed her off so much, that Tiamat is almost certainly going to direct her forces to attack us. Her Clerics and Abishai Demons will probably make an appearance, along with some of her mages, though there may be some mages and non-devoted people with the means to do so quietly running for their lives right now.

Please tell me that the Moonchaser has dragon bane weapons added onto it. This would be the best time to use those.
Unfortunately not, but each Steam Cannon shot inflicts 10d10 damage, and they're currently enhanced by a 20th caster level Magic Army spell. That adds a +4 Enhancement bonus to Attack and Damage rolls, and lets them ignore most Damage Reduction.

Not sure.

She has conflicting goals, the spread of her servants and religion, and ultimatly her children too, is also important for her.
Otherwise she wouldn't have blessed all those Red Wyrmlings who didn't stay with the GC with a Mindblank and allowed them to spread out over the world.
I think it's propably that at least some of her retreating assets here, especially the Drakes, will go the ground as well as they can. Some Abishai will likely do the same.

@DragonParadox about that update, I bet Benerro and Zherys didn't see themselves saving each other's lives in the nick of time and trading banter mid-battle.

And it all comes back to Viserys, and the people he brought together in common purpose... kicking Tiamat in the ass.

Abishai are more likely to flee, IMO. They are probably smarter and can use Greater Teleport at will, and are accustomed to acting as independent agents for Tiamat. Any Drakes that flee, presumably at the behest of their riders, are going to have trouble feeding themselves. It's not easy to come across a steady supply of mages or magic items to munch on when you don't have a large army gathering them for you.

The ruling for the Steam Cannons is that they target touch AC, but deduct the difference between full AC and touch AC from the damage. That was decided literal years ago and will now finally be relevant.

So in addition to doing heavy damage, they also hit quite nicely.

In other words, Dragons, who get most of their high AC from their Natural Armor bonus, are going to have trouble avoiding getting sniped.

Scintillating Scales is such an important spell for Dragons for this exact reason.

I apologise if this is wildly off topic, but I was looking up some of the 3.5 maps of the planes, and I was wondering if the negatively and positively aspected "quasi-elemental" planes existed, the ones that 'border' the elemental planes, and the negative/positive planes.

Like, the 'Quasi-Elemental Plane of Salt' for example.

I don't think we've seen the really esoteric quasi-elemental Planes referenced in this quest. Molten Skies might be as close as we've gotten to one of the blended border Planes.

We don't really know. They are also massively more inimical to life than even the Elemental ones, which can be adapted to.

  • [X] Plan Escalation - Continued
-[X] The Wyverns and Moonchaser will continue unleashing their Teleporting Beetle Bombs on the Golden Company's Drakes, and the Moonchaser opens fire on the Ancient Nightmare Dragons with its Magic Army spell enhanced Steam Cannons, but stops firing on them before any of our allies close to melee range with them.
-[X] Although he is unlikely to return close enough to continue participating in the battle, the Hadhayosh will use his Plane Shift charm to return to Planetos from the Elemental Plane of Fire. The Harbinger looks for an appropriate target upon which it can unleash the hidden Nekro-Kraken.
-[X] Team Vee continues Summoning and will send their remaining Herald to retrieve the bodies of the fallen Erinyes so that we may ensure they are restored without delay after the conclusion of hostilities.
-[X] Although the Ancient Nightmare Dragons are tempting targets, they are not our true prey. Allow Malarys, Amrelath and the rest of his team to handle the pair. None of our Dragons use their breath weapons against these Nightmare Dragons, in case they are also protected as the war elephants had been.
--[X] Malarys targets the Nightmare Dragons with a Chain Dispel (effective caster level of 24th w/Bead of Karma and Dispelling bonus). He uses his Ring of Spell-Battle to counter the first attempt at enemy spellcasting.
--[X] Tyene casts Assay Spell Resistance, then targets the Nightmare Dragons with a Sunburst spell using two 7th level spell slots.
--[X] Waymar casts Assay Spell Resistance, then targets one of the Nightmare Dragons with a Born of the Three Thunders modified Lightning Lance spell, directing all three lances at a single Dragon.
--[X] Rina casts Assay Spell Resistance then hits the Nightmare Dragon which Waymar did not target with her Fell Drain Sound Burst spell. She uses her Battlemagic Perception spell to counter the second enemy attempt at spellcasting.
--[X] Amrelath, the Mighty Mind Dragon, and the two Fiery Dragonbeasts move in to engage the Nightmare Dragons in melee combat. Details for a fully combat-buffed Mighty Mind Dragon's combat statistics HERE.
--[X] Nettles targets one of the Nightmare Dragons using her group's Amber Sarcophagus spell scroll, selecting whichever Dragon seems least affected by the group's opening salvo. If either of the Nightmare Dragons survive, that is. She uses a Brilliant Barrier charm to protect her group if it proves necessary.
-[X] Viserys expends an 8th level spell slot to Summon a Greater Earth Elemental (54,000 pounds) to fall upon the Temple of Tiamat from a great height.

I'm going to hope that plane in particular doesn't exist because I've read the Tale of the Industrious Rogue and it feels like what we'd do.

Well, they are pretty large targets after all.

Granted, they are also one of the few lifeforms who can reasonably expect to take a few hits from those cannon and live to tell the tale, but I'd wager that they will freak out quiet badly when struck with a completely mundane weapon that doesn't need to find a weak spot between their scales, instead plowing straight through until it lodges itself into bone.

Hunting for a weak point is for peasants and fools enamored with tales of dragon slaying and deciding to do it with a sword like a chump.

When your weapon is a rod of barbed steel longer than a spear, thick as a small sapling, and being thrown at a velocity just shy of "oh god why" and "Fuck you that's how" anything is a weak point.

Acceptable means for sustainable scale harvesting.
