Did we ever give Bloom some equipment?
I mean, her ability to create magic swords and her constant Holy Aura make many of the basics unneeded, but there are still some things she could profit from.
Yep. Here's what we crafted her, but I haven't made a sheet for her with it included. Might do that today.

Monk's Belt
Amulet w/+2 Wisdom, +1 Intelligence, +1 Charisma
Anklets of Translocation
Upgrade Belt w/+3 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, +2 Strength
Earrings of Clarity (1/Day Third Eye of Clarity effect)
Cloak of the Hedge Wizard(Conjuration)
Crown of Freedom (1/Day Freedom of Movement at 7th level)
Bracers of Armor w/(+1 Enhancement w/+4 Soulfire Enchantment)

Neat.
Have you considered something that lets her cast Protection from Elements or maybe Immunity?
She's vulnerable to cold and pretty for north.

Yep. It's something we're going to craft for her this month. We ran out of crafting capacity last month, since the effect needs to be of a high enough level to be useful for her.

Do we need an earthquake spell for this? I know that we generally find alignment spells distasteful (for good reason), but Wages of Sin is a lower level spell that would play off the paranoia cultivated by the GC nicely.

Almost all of them will have contingencies to handle each other, and even the ones with protection from mind magic of this level will still feel the hit and see all those plans come into play from the ones that fail. That seems like the kind of thing that'd make them trigger countermeasures even without the spell.

This whole situation is suspicious to them, and reeks of high level caster. Fortunately, we don't need to hide that if we convince them it was one of their own who took this opportunity to kill some rivals and blame it on the shugenja.

Alignment spells are perfectly fine, we're now at a stage where they no longer influence Viserys. Avasculate for example can be used freely.

That said, Wages of Sin is Mind Affecting and will not affect three of the Golden Company mages/clerics here due to their Mind Blanks.

Right now we're not going with the Earthquake option yet. Varys is going to play Psychic Detective first.

The reason I originally chose Earthquake is its ability to affect those inside the house and any tunnels which may have been constructed below it, not to mention the house itself, without needing line of effect. Wages of Sin needs a creature to target, so unless someone in the house opens a window and stands there waiting to be hit, it won't do us any good.

  • [X] Scout the townhouse to learn if our foes have already escaped by unseen means.
-[X] Viserys casts Scintillating Scales, Shield, and Greater Arcane Sight so that Varys may benefit from them, Lya uses scrolls of Superior Invisibility and Mind Blank on her, and Varys herself activates her various enchanted items. She'll fly within range of the townhouse to determine how many unwarded minds might wait within, as well as any spells which may have been used to ward it.
--[X] Viserys expands an 8th level spell slot to cast Summon Monster VIII via his robe's enchantment to Summon 1d4+1 Jannis. They will accompany Varys while she scouts the vicinity of the townhouse, remaining Invisible and Ethereal, looking for hidden tunnels, other escape routes, and anything else of interest. They will relay anything they find to Varys, who will then share it with us via our Telepathic Bond.
---[X] Depending on what Varys and our scouts discover, we will determine how to proceed.

Part MMMCCCXXIII: Of Barred Ways and Hollow Walkers
Of Barred Ways and Hollow Walkers

Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

The colonel's mansion is a distraction every bit as much as the vision you had seen earlier is a lie, and though neither had been meant for you both of them could harm your efforts just the same. "Varys..." you sent, the little dragon quick to uncoil itself and eager to be part of the battle as any other of her blood, though battle is not quite what you send her into. Warded against foresight and enchantment, veiled from even common sight, you bid her to fly through the townhouse and discover how many minds are within, how many mages, warriors and.... You remember the abishai in Old Town. "Everyone, find every footman, every cook, every servant," you add. "They might be used as shields by the mages depending on what that ritual was enacted."

While your familiar flies through the sky you send conjured janni through the stone below, the dream-spun spirits treading as softly as ghosts looking for other means of escape, tunnels, passages, even chambers in the stone that might be beyond the reach of your teleportation snare.

The mansion is still burning, there are shapes in the flames now, too obscured by smoke and distance to make any sort of definitive judgement on what they are but they seem insectoid somehow, black, chitinous and scuttling. You can hear the screems of the dying over the growing chaos below. It is clear whatever the Golden Company had unleashed it is far beyond the ability of even the disciplined soldiers of the colonel's guard to deal with.

Rina opens her mouth to speak, perhaps to urge you do something about the battle, but before she can speak one of your conjured spirits returns, far too early to have completed a thorough search. "The house is warded against such as us, above and below, we may not enter nor be called within."

"Such as you?" Lya asks surprised. "Genies?"

"No, beings conjured for a task, I suspect we cannot be called within those wards either," the spirit replies.

Part of you wants to curse your ill luck, or your enemy's foresight, though you are also intrigued. There are spells that prevent conjured beings from interacting with a person of course. A simple talisman of protection can manage that, but to do so with an entire house... You want those wards and from the gleam in Lya's eyes so does she.

Varys makes his way back soon thereafter with better news, better for you at least. There are only two mages inside the yownhouse, both of the Volantine sorcerers of the Seventh Circle, but Raerys Aergyreon is rather distracted, vulnerable. As soon as Ning had been warned and fled he had cast a ward against scrying by means of an talisman and then he had possessed the unfortunate shugenja, no doubt seeking to use him to further sow discord between the emperor and his sister.

Thankfully both the mages within are yet unaware of the snare you have set to waylay translocation as Raerys has every reason to show his victim exiting the house to any watching servants of Pol Qo, he should be showing himself in three or four minutes according to Varys. "I'd say let him come out, the townhouse is a maze of wards and traps, spell-storing glyphs and maybe other things I could not see at a glance. Best to meet him on our terms, not his," she concludes her report.

"Be that as it may," Tyene muses. "If we let the mage come out in his stolen body we would have to deal with him in full view of the street, whereas if we went after his body lying helpless inside we could deal with it behind closed doors. It's not like he can even flee, leaving his true body behind, he is not a demon."

She makes a fair point, there is a reason why you have never made use of such tactics for all their many uses, but on the other hand Varys was only able to catch a glimpse of the townhouse's protections. If you had been designing a safe house, it would come with considerable wards and... contingencies. Trader Town does not need one more burning house.

What do you do?

[] Target the mage inside watching over Raerys's body

[] Wait for the possessed shugenja to come out and then trap the possessing spirit as you did the efreeti archmage over Valyria

[] Write in

OOC: And here we are with my apologies for being so late. I think this may be another two update day unfortunately.

And all of these guys are under Mind Blank?

Interesting. It means that we can bag one of them without the other noticing. I say we go in, Amber sarcophagus one mage, loot the soul-less body, thoroughly bind it, and then go near the possessed body and activate Antimagic Field, instantly ending the soul jar effect (unless they have an artifact of that, which I doubt), and transfering the soul of that mage to the bound body.

We could even have the soul-less body encased in amber sarcophagus too.

OOC: And here we are with my apologies for being so late. I think this may be another two update day unfortunately. Not yet edited.
Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

No worries if we only get two updates. Real life takes priority, dude.

I'm still inclined to Earthquake the house. If we wait until the possessed Shugenja exits, there will only be the mage twins inside and one of them will be insensate.

Our people can capture the possessed Sugenja as soon as he leaves the house, then we Earthquake it. The mage inside watching over his brother will attempt to escape, almost certainly Teleporting out with his brother, right into our waiting claws.

Nice update.
Of course, your real life takes priority DP.

Is there anything stopping us from just walking in? I doubt wards will block simply walking in through the front door, and all the guards seem to be in disarray so they likely won't stop us. We could walk in (in disguise), and then try to grab the Mind Blanked mage.

However, the best possible plan would be to grab this mage without letting them know that we're directly involved.
Goals (in order) :
  1. Don't let them know that we're involved, and don't let them know that several Mind Blanked mages are involved. One is weird enough, more than one is a huge hint that it's us.
  2. Get the Mind Blanked mage. It's one down, after all.
If we can't achieve this, we ought to retreat.

Risks:
  1. Them figuring out several powerful mages are involved.
    1. Suggestion 1 : pretend to be a Kami of some sort.
    2. Suggestion 2 : Let nobody escape and leave no witnesses (it's hard to tell a single un-Divinable target void from a bunch of adjacent such targets, all doing the same thing)
  2. Them figuring out we were somehow involved - perhaps if the Kami we sent was incautious? Perhaps if that stone Kami we contacted starts telling everyone that a Dragon was here, and what the Dragon wanted him to do? Both of these scenarios will reveal our presence.
    1. Suggestion 1 : the Kami we sent was told to be discreet about us, right? Can someone remind me? Because otherwise we should send him a Sending and ask him to keep quiet. Although even then, they will wonder who cast those buffs on him...
    2. Suggestion 2 : get openly involved as Corlys Waters, and openly state that we're a Western ally of that mage and that she asked us to come along, well-hidden, as her bodyguard. Corlys Waters isn't known to the locals, but the GC will know immediately. The aim here is to make more of their important people retreat to that fortress on the Shadow Plane. We will then infiltrate it (using the intel we got from Varys) and try to gank them there.
Basically, our main priority right now needs to be shifting blame on someone else. Our second priority is getting the target. This is NOT the first priority, because even if we get him if we're revealed the others may scatter and that will make things harder.
If we are willing to let them scatter (like Azel suggested) then we ought to start by attacking their camp with infiltrators going after them personally, not blow our cover to get one secondary guy.

If we take them out discreetly, couldn't we have our own mindblanked agents in place to pretend to be them? We could probably bookify the mages and gain any information we might need for the assault and for keeping our pretense up.

[X] Plan "We will rock you!"
-[X] Under cover of Invisibility spells, Tyene, Waymar, and Teana will move into position to capture the possessed Shegenja when he exits the house. Tyene and Teana will use their Geniekind spells to appear as Djinni and Waymar will use his Greater Ribbon of Disguise to take on the appearance of a Yi-Tish warrior, in the event that they are noticed despite their precautions. Teana, in her full Shadow-Traced state, will target the possessed Shujenja with a Baleful Shadow Transformation (DC 32) spell while Tyene casts a Screen spell in order to prevent anyone from noticing the attack. The Screen will also shroud the house itself so that it appears normal even after the next step of the plan.
-[X] Once Tyene's group engages their target, Viserys will use a Miracle to duplicate the effects of an Earthquake spell targeted on the townhouse in an attempt to draw out the mages and subject them to our Teleport Trap.

I'm writing a competing plan. I get it, you like the earthquake, but not only does this plan fail to properly give them someone to blame for all this, it also unnecessarily slaughters all the civilians inside.
Worse, by causing an unexplainable eathquake, you risk having them investigate Earth spirits around here... Earth spirits like the one we revealed our presence to!

I'm confident we can extract a good deal of intel from them in a hurry, but I don't think we could pull off a convincing act that wouldn't raise suspicions among their fellow GC mages.

Varys confirmed that there are only two people in the house, the Volantene mage twins.

As for the unexplained Earthquake, Tyene's Screen spell will last for 24 hours. We should be able to wrap up this particular thread before anyone has a chance to notice the destroyed house.

Wait, you're planning to gank their camp today? No preparing specific spell loadouts, no giving our infiltrators more time to get in?
I'd assumed that we would be doing that in a day or two, not right now.

No, of course not. But we should certainly be able to get the captured mages to Lady Xue or Pol Qo and let them know what's going on within that time frame.

EDIT: That said, if it was up to me I would have already nuked their camp like I explained days ago. Sure, we wouldn't get everyone, but most of the mages and the vast majority of the army could be killed with a single spell. The surviving mages would probably flee to the Shadow Fortress, right where we want them.
