[X] Goldfish

TBH I think the Hunter's Moon is a great ship. It has character, which is what tends to attract strong and loyal crews.
Stannis probably thought so, too, when it was the flagship of the Royal Navy of Westeros. ;)

That it was once one the flagship of our enemy just gives it even more character! :p

It's done, It's Finally DONE! So, so much reading...

But it was all worth it!

@DragonParadox this quest is so fucking Good!

I cant wait to attempt at participating.

It made sense at the time, given the critical lack of crafters due to the recent return of magic to the world. It was frustrating, but understandable.
Looking at things through this lens, look at the crafters Planetos has produced that are high level enchanters. I think there's a scattering of them in every single faction, enough to probably equal ours put together (as in, at least one native to Planetos who is a high level crafter in each significant supernatural faction that isn't under our aegis already). But we've got several of them under one banner, and the ironic part is none of them joined because we could literally smash that budget bottleneck like a Fabergé egg, except Qyburn I guess but he's weird like that, but for a bunch of disparate and unrelated reasons.

And now we can produce a couple of Apprentice level Enchanters every month of course, and eventually more than that... but they're still only low-level crafters.

It's a good thing that for a lot of our strategic projects, you don't need to be high leveled to contribute to them, eh?

Come to think of it @Goldfish, correct me if I'm wrong, but for most of our kingdom-scale projects, barring Construct crafting, our baby crafters don't have any trouble, do they?

Was not expecting the exploding crits... that probably goes without saying, but things got really silly. You were supposed to help a few mages level, maybe get one sorcerer to express though painstaking trial and error, not seven at once by sheer inspiration and charisma.
Viserys has given so many speeches, a speech of his is now a significant enough event to warrant milestone xp for scrub mages.

Yeah, they can easily handle most of our strategic and infrastructure crafting. A lot of our really useful stuff is low level, but leveraged for maximum benefit.

It's not quite the same, but we recently buffed a kid with so much social enhancement magic, that combined with a Telepathic peptalk, we accidentally turned him into a 3rd level Beguiler.

To us, it was Tuesday.

To young Lord Mallery, it was one of the most significant days of his entire life.

That's true... inter-continental MirrorVision is perfect for creating heroes through speeches then.

One day in the near future, every 13 year old child across the Imperium will gather before their local MirrorVision to partake in the annual 'Awakening Speech', a once in a lifetime opportunity to receive a blessing of power from the Dragon King, to cast off the shackles of the mundane and embrace their destiny.

It will not be the only path to becoming an adventurer, but it will be among the most prestigious.

A good national holiday! Day of Heroes. A day to celebrate HEROES OF THE IMPERIUM and simultaneously generate publicity for new ones who have just gotten into the swing of the whole being famous thing, and even fit in a nice speech about how everyone out there contributing to society is a hero to their people. What would be one pointless platitude from anybody else sounds completely sincere and moving coming from Viserys.

I like this idea, but why limit it to 13 year olds and only 13 year olds? I could see requiring everyone to be at least 13 years old to partake, but not the limitation to only them.

Also if you are joking about this, can you please explain to me why this is not a good idea? As based on what happened with the Beguiler kid and those sorcerers we awoke from the speech way back when it seems like it would be a worthwhile way to get at least a few more casters.

Maybe one which occurs on the 12th day of the 9th month, the same day in which Viserys's magic awakened when he was just 13 years old?

No joke. I think it would be a really neat national holiday. It should be limited to one attempt not because others can't attend, but the metaphysical impact should be lost on multiple viewings. Watch it every year if you want, but don't expect different results. Nothing should stop someone from seeing it later, but I don't think it would be as special if you could watch the speech 30 times and finally awaken to magic when your in your 50s or something along those lines.

You get your one chance, preferably when you are 13 (just like Viserys was) in the full grasp of puberty and your body is already beginning to undergo the slow, awkward metamorphosis into adulthood. The age is as much symbolic as anything, but I think it fits.

It was mostly tongue-in-cheek humor.

There's something to the idea that a more established and, for want of a given word since I certainly wouldn't call Valyria that even if they would, "enlightened" society, would want to make sure only people fully adults do things like get married, enlist in military service, or go through potentially traumatic magical awakenings.

I think for one thing, you got kids awakening so young in this quest because the world is so dangerous and there's a lot of factors contributing to stress which might engage "bloodlines". Like for Rhaenys it's more like "I want to gain magic so I can help my family like they helped me and my mom", for Shireen it would be something similar "I need magic to become a stronger heir to my father, so I can protect my own inheritance and Get Shit Done like the rest of my extended family".

It's funny how Viserys possesses two of Robert Baratheon's bastards and isn't at all interested in turning them into child soldiers... heck, he gave Mia Stone guards to protect her, not keep her prisoner.

In this hypothetical future, one with Awakening Day or whatever it's called, those teens Awakened by Viserys' speech wouldn't be expected to start adventuring. It would be more like earning a scholarship to a prestigious university, one where you can learn to break reality on a whim. While education will be free to all of our citizens, not all institutions will be created equally due to resource allocation and population density, so a ticket straight to Sorcerer's Deep and the Shadow Tower, along with a guaranteed full caster class (as opposed to potentially being relegated to a mere Adept, Mage-Smith, or Hedge Mage) would be a pretty sweet deal for a farm kid from Golden Fields or the hinterlands of the Imperium.

Just got reminded from my ritual perusals of old updates. You should craft some gear for Nettles next month. And we need a basic starter kit for a fighter, made for what's his name--that's right, Justin Massey. I think I reminded you earlier. That guy's gonna throw himself into some dangerous situations, I have a feeling.

We crafted gear for Nettles last month, IIRC, it just hasn't been added to her sheet yet. I'll check my sheets when I get back to my computer.
