  • [X] Intercept the Efreeti Expedition at once, gathering all available Companions not otherwise occupied in Yi-Ti or the City of Brass, along with what other powerful allies we can gather on short notice, including Teana, Lady Saenena and her Dragon, Melisandre, Zherys, Amrelath, Relath, Yrael, Bloom, Siduri, Yrten, along with Mereth and several of her sister Erinyes. Balerion the Black Dread will be allowed to take wing as well. Three Wyvern Fightercraft will also participate, armed with Liquid Ice and Explosive Beetle Bombs in addition to their standard munitions. Viserys will bring the Seeker along, armed and armored as best we can manage on such short notice, though it will be kept in a Smoky Confinement bottle until he judges its services to be needed.
-[X] The Harbinger, aided by a Herald, Glyra and her troupe, and a cadre of Erinyes will keep the Goblin Market under control while Malarys, Richard, and Rina are otherwise occupied.

Part MMMXLIII: Powers Beneath Dragon's Wings Gathered
Powers Beneath Dragon's Wings Gathered

Twenty-Fifth Day of the Tenth Month 293 AC

Aebys' words spoken long ago in the catacombs of He'Nekar come back to you: Great spikes of Dragonsteel driven into the stone beneath Valyria, piercing veils of molten stone to channel the power of the earth's fiery blood to the dragonlords' will. A grand work for an age of waking magic, shattered by the Doom, worn down by the passage of ages, but still potent. No doubt potent reagents, but... A shiver runs down your spine. Could the Efreeti be seeking more? Some arcane link to the Doom, some means to invoke its power? More times than you can count you burned creatures of fire by invoking the merest echo of that calamity. Do they seek a ward, or a weapon?

Even as your mind whirls with questions you are already moving through the grey ether into the brazier room to call on your companions in Lys and Tyrosh. All of your companions will be there save only those who must remain in Yi Ti lest you give insult to the emperor. Calling on Xor from the investigation into the wine god would mean little for the investigation, but Malarys is hesitant to return from Lys in the midst of his investigation... at least until you explain the cause.

"The Fey can wait, their treachery unraveled in the fullness of time," the mage priest proclaims, his ordinarily saturnine expression hardening to stone. Returning to Valyria will not be easy for him you know, yet he would have it no other way.

For his part Ser Richard greets the news of going out to fight with a clear enemy over Fey intrigues with relief while Rina tries to put on a brave smile, though what she manages is closer to a grimace.

Lya looks a touch flustered as she manifests in the center of the courtyard with a hiss of displaced air. "What's happening? Couldn't this have waited a few more days?"

"No, I don't think it can," you answer grimly. What had been an idle investigation to potentially enrich yourself at the expense of your foes had become much more.

Bloom and Amrelath arrive practically at the same time, the first carried by Vee's magic, the second on the wing. Their eyes meet warily, the most uneasy at working together though both are creatures of fire, exchanging terse nods. A few moments later Mereth and six of her sisters flicker into being one by one, joined by the steel-winged Yrael, who oddly enough seems to gravitate towards their formation in the crafting of war plans, old kinship shining forth before the hour of battle you imagine.

Teana is one of the last to arrive, looking somewhat nervous at the prospect, though not so much that you are tempted to ask her to remain home.

Overhead Korzion's wings veil the face of the sky... and between one moment and the next Lady Melisandre is simply there. It had not occurred to you to wonder if she would agree or not, much less to doubt if she was trustworthy, you realize, faintly surprised at yourself. "My lady, thank you for the swift arrival. I am sorry I could not explain more of what we will be facing, but time is of the essence."

"Time and overwhelming strength." A faint smile touches the edges of her lips as she looks over the company you had gathered. "I see many with a kinship to fire, and I am certain between our joined magics we can ward the others, but the way of shadow might serve us just as well."

"How do you mean?" you ask, pushing aside a surge of impatience. You did not call upon so many wise and skilled in sorcery to treat them as so many weapons.

"Your message claimed that we know where the enemy was almost half a day ago, the place from whence the Devil was banished. We also have maps accurate enough to guess where the foe might seek to enter the mountain..." She pauses a moment. "Accurate maps of Valyria are no small things, mind you. They would fetch quite a high price in Asshai, paid in more than common silver."

You catch the questions she does not ask: "I trust the quality of the maps implicitly, at least for the time of their writing. What the Doom may have done we cannot know until we see it with our own eyes."

The priestess nods, having obviously expected the answer. "I would then suggest that those of us who can veil ourselves move ahead to scout and find the enemy before we can rain down fire from on high."

As though timed precisely to emphasize her point, a trio of wyverns whistle overhead, somehow even more noticeable than the dragons.

How do you approach finding and ambushing the Efreeti expedition?

OOC: This feels a little cluttered because of all the characters, but it can't really be helped since it's perfectly reasonable for you guys to gather as many forces as you want.

Too busy at work to write up a plan right now. Not sure if we should scout or not.

Zherys running late? You worked in most everyone else. :V

Scouting depends a lot on how long the scouting will take.

I vividly remember us sending Varys to scout in White Harbor to spy on the devils, only that we weren't told that she would be so slow that the summoning ritual would be complete and we got a surprise!Cornugon.

I don't want anything like that here.

@DragonParadox, how long is scouting expected to take?

Since the scouts can wind walk (600 ft/round) and the distances are not that great it should not take very long

@Deliste If she was a powerful sorceresses, then she could have had a Gold Dragon Wyrmling as familiar, and that just about settles it :V

Ignoring the obvious choice of being a Dragon Familiar, a Coure Eladrin is really nice, a Winter Wolf or Hippogriff have rather good physical stats. and with PF Improved Familiars, Faerie and Tidepool Dragons are pretty good too, having a bit of Sorc casting but no greater age categories.

I think if I were to start as a Tidepool or Faerie dragon, I'd try to turn myself into a Sea Dragon or whatever the equivalent True Dragon for a Faerie is. Tidepool has an clearer evolution and better initial casting, but Faerie has a fantastic SLA and better stats.

Scouting using Superior Invisibility is pretty effective, since only True Seeing and Mindsight can detect it, and both have a very limited range. Cast that on someone in conjunction with something like Greater Blink or Ethereal Jaunt and they're going to be very hard to find.

Scouting definitely sounds good.

Apropos of nothing in particular, would it be possible to enchant an instrument to be heard over a wide radius? Been thinking about how to abuse Inspire Courage for the Legions recently. I want my 4d6+4 bonus damage, dammit!

We could use drums, big ones.
That works for individual formations, but it's prohibitively costly in Bards, unfortunately. Unless we have a bunch of them lying around I don't know about. Obviously, in the future we should have a couple level threes for every what, hundred men? But in the meantime I'd like a stopgap for set piece battles, what few of them we end up having.

Edit: unless the drums carry for several miles over the sound of battle, in which case we're good. I haven't been able to find figures for 'furthest carrying musical instrument.'

Glad to have you aboard, Jack.

Welcome to the madness.

Why, thank you! Truth be told I'm not sure if I'm able to... contribute that is this Quest. At least of this magnitude. 'Cuz a) I know jack-shit about both ASOIAF and D&D, b) I can't plan worth-a-shit, and c) I skimmed about 90% of the Quest that aren't threadmarked.

So... it's very, VERY daunting of what is ahead of me right now. BUT! I'll see what I can do. Making OMAKE and such of the like.

(Now let's see here, where's that paper containing Viserys vs Bloodthirster[Warhammer] OMAKE idea...)

Viserys vs a Bloodthirster would be very un-fun for the Daemon I'd say.

Bloodthirster: Feeble mage your stolen power cannot harm me
Viserys: *turns into a dragon and shoots a searing breath weapon into his face * You seem to burn quite well

I think of the Greater Daemons of Chaos he would have the most trouble with a Changer of Ways since they have both powerful magic and an ability to turn their foes' magic against them
