[X] Artemis1992

@Artemis1992, Maybe we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket? We can ask for the help of an Archon AND a Phoenix. Both would be great companions for a young Paladin.

[X] Accept Brianne's oath
-[X] Ask if she has need of a good scout in her endevours and ask Yrael if he can spare a Spyglass Archon, maybe the one we first met in Mantarys, who gave a bit of himself for Glyra?
-[X] If both agree ask the Archon to try and inform her about our reign and realm while working with her, preferable not in too-big pieces at once
-[X] And also a Lesser Phoenix to round out her education on the Planes and Gods, and to talk a bit about the nicer things out there, since our books were only of fiends and monsters

Can we make it clear that the Lesser Phoenix is meant to be an active companion like the Spyglass Archon instead of a visiting teacher?

I'm not comfortable with that.

A Phoenix is not subtle, brings no skills a level 5 Paladin can't match or exceed and is pretty vulnerable.
I would prefer if he stayed mostly at home, instead of going into danger with her. He can't help much in direct combat anyway, better have him as teacher and advisor.

The Phoenixes can get their own classes. We can just pick a budding bard or something and it would serve very well in that capacity.

Also, at this point Brienne probably knows when she doesn't need to worry about subtlety.

If she does visit SD I'm gonna laugh if she bumps into Lucans delegation.

My own bitching aside. Sounds good.

Doesn't make sense to me WHY you want her to swear before explaining all the stuff that might make her backpedal, but whatevs.

Look, if the Phoenix we send decides to take a more active role, that's for it and Brienne to decide.
But I don't like the idea of sending a baseline Phoenix into danger above its CR where it will also be a non-extinguishable torch that denies Brienne more subtle options in investigations.

Edit: I'd really rather leave it as open as it is now. Teaching is the main directive, if it wants to do more and Brienne wants its help, fine.

You say this, but when the setting is a post-apocalyptic wasteland and the Illithid are going full Infiltrator/Saboteur spam...
Yes? We've been conquering left and right, and fairly ruling and developing the lands we conquered.

This is a medieval setting, with medieval gods. By nature even Brienne's religion depicts kingship as a totalitarian affair. If she ever has a problem with us, that's not going to be one of them.

I literally just said we could send a budding bard if that was your concern. That's not a baseline phoenix.

Yeah being a Paladin sucks, the epitome of a Paladin is all about self-sacrificing, they didn't become Paladins because they want the job, they became Paladins because someone has to do it, and they would rather suffer themselves, than see others suffer.

Goblins - 12/23/2006 Big Ears here is probably my favorite Paladin, because to me he very much embody what being a Paladin is all about.

It's been far too long for me to remember the details, and my poor memory doesn't help, but I vaguely recall a decent book series about a Paladin. I think it handled the difficulty of being a Paladin quite well, if anyone wishes to look it up.

I think it was called The Deeds of Paksenarian (spelling may vary).

We can give the Pheonix a Ribbon of Disguise to hide it's unusual nature from casual observation. They have useful abilities, even if only used for support. I think they have a 1/Day Cure Moderate Wounds SLA, in addition to some other stuff?

Light Wounds, IIRC.
Less than her Hands heal by now.
Also a Detect Evil (Paladin has it) and Burning Hands.

I'm offended by that. We're much Bette at our job than those peeps.
Oh really?
Stalin was amazingly successful, you know. And we fit a frankly disturbing amount of Stalin's characteristics...
Depending on whose propaganda you believe, we might even have a very similar personality to Stalin!

I make a lot of "Viserys is De Gaulle"-style jokes, but I seriously do fear that we may one day end up as Stalin (or at least with Stalin's post-mortem PR). Not ideal.

@Duesal, I was thinking more "omnipresent secret police, preemptive murder, ethnic/racial cleansing..."
All of those things could become "necessary" incredibly easily if the illithid really started fucking with us.

I remember those. It's the series that began with this book: The Sheepfarmer's Daughter

I really liked it too, though by the end I was more invested in the mage whose family had a dark past she had to redeem. That probably says more about my taste in fantasy characters than the series though, which I found solid throughout.

So just look for a Phoenix who has a few class levels instead. We have dozens in our service.

This argument is shaky at best if you're defending the rights of the illithid of all things. Each of them eats a person on a monthly basis. Of course we're planning to kill them all.

I'm inclined to accept for the simple reason that ultimately Brienne is telling us this: she'll follow as long as she believes she should. Which is probably true in some particular way or another for all of our vassals/citizens who aren't Lawful Outsiders or Stannis Baratheon. But maybe making sure she's as informed as she thinks herself to be before taking her oath is a good idea.

To be honest, given that all of what was said not so long ago on the rights of fiends to not be killed out of hand because they're not trying to murder people at the moment could be applied to Aberrations, I fully expect Brain-Meat Substitute TM to become a thing at some point.

OK
Sleeping now.

Have you considered Azema?
Her CR is fitting and she could open whole new worlds for Brienne.

Aside from any innuendo I actually mean that, her perspective could be immensly useful to Briennes personal and moral devolpement, if she can accept it.

This wouldn't have even the slightest chance to be considered until after their empire is shattered and their never again a threat to us.

And even then, I value our relationship with the Merling King far more, so we're probably not going to make the effort.
