I'm perfectly alright with promising him a Shadow Dragon egg. Hell, maybe he'll even give us years to bring it to him or something - we're all immortals here, after all!

More seriously, we could probably Fungus Forge a shadow dragon from the corpse of the one(s) we're going to kill when going after Illyrio.

@Duesal, we're going to be killing Shadow Dragon(s) when we go after the fortress of the servants of Tiamat, anyway. Maybe we'll find eggs there?
Stories find together. No character should be wasted.

I would bet you, copper for adamant, that the old Shadow Dragon in Tiamat's service happens to be female and have eggs.
Oh, I know for a fact that it's a female Shadow Dragon. DP confirmed that a while back. I just don't want to share an egg, and I'd get annoyed waiting months for this to happen. This makes us wait on a fetch quest, whereas building him a mount either through crafting or the Fungus Forge just uses up the crafting budget.
CR wise something of at least CR 10 though he is more interesting in it fitting his themes, of shadow, illusion made real and deadly and the hunt for his foes.
We could definitely manage a CR 10 ambush predator.

this, here, is a problem.

I don't mind holding it in mind, but a promise binds us to actually seek them out.

And us finding any is not guaranteed.

:/

I'd rather just grow him a murderbeast.
It's also the crux of my problem. Promising a shadow dragon egg means waiting months to get that egg, whereas we could just build him something great far sooner.
So we need to make him something with one of these templates?

Shadow Animal
Shadow creature
Shadow Creature would likely work best.

People, a Shadow Dragon is an incredibly awesome mount. No way we'll be able to craft such something equally good for any kind of reasonable price.

@Duesal, crafting something that good will also take ages. Meanwhile, we're going to be going after that Shadow Dragon within a month or two anyway...

Keep in mind you also have very good social stats which you can use to persuade him just like in any other trade.

@DragonParadox
What would he say about a Cauchemar Nightmare?
Fitting enough?

We can summon one, easily, then we'd have to convince it that being a Fey King's mount is a sweet deal, which shouldn't be too hard.

A bit bright and flashy with all the fire but you might be able to sell it

Wow, that's really some business he is doing here. He sold us an Unraveling two years ago or so and now he is getting a shadow dragon.
Considering how time in our scale is inconsequential for Fey, he just traded an unraveling for a shadow dragon.

I wish I could trade like that.

What he really secretly wants is a pack of shadow mastiffs... They fit his story/needs reasonably well, and every Lord needs his pack of hounds.

Well if we go the method of hunting dragons then the answer becomes "Kill Tiamat's shadow dragon and hope it laid eggs.". If we go the grow method then we need to find a shadow touched creature. Couple rounds of divinations and maybe asking some extra planar allies might do that. Summon a demon from hell and convince it to work for him... could work. I like the last option.

What exactly is the problem with a long haul on this? Ok, he has this thing built of our essence. We promise him something in return for it, with the condition that he not sell out to anyone but us.

There. Done.

[] A compromise
-[] We get him a Cauchemar for now and get our Shadow back right now
-[] When we find a Shadow Dragon egg (which is likely in a few months), we give him that and the Cauchemar can go

That would be a compromise for everyone involved:
We get our Shadow now, rather than having to wait for it and wonder what the fey can do with it.
The King gets a sweet mount now and eventually a dragon.
The Cauchemar only has to agree to a limited term of service, of which it will be far easier and cheaper to persuade than permanent deals.
