@Azel, given DP's current absence (either busy IRL or just internet problems) do you want to get the Tyrell finance vote drafted?

Aren't we forcing the Pentoshi to stop their debt slavery?
:p

The difference is, they maintain their freedom from bondage, we'll just seize the shit out of their assets if they default on the debt.

This may be a lesser concern even in the days of "the Iron Bank always collects", but nobody has any illusions about being to outrun a Repo Dragonman.

"Yss. We've got a serious problem."
"What isss? The mothther of dragonsss? The devourer of mindss?"
"We've got a runner. The debt is currently 2,100,000 Iron Marks."

Anyone have the image of the repo guy in the Sims that has a ghostcatching vacuum cleaner that takes all your stuff. We need to create that.

Oh, but we got repo guys that will first take your possessions, helped by divination, and then we can talk how to care about the remaining debt. Definitely not debt slavery, but a time-lease on the soul, perhaps?

Interlude CDXII: Bearing Book and Sword
Bearing Book and Sword

Twenty-Sixth Day of the Eighth Month 293 AC

Anya was not usually one to admire herself in the mirror. Life as an urchin and thug in Gulltown and later a lawman in the Deep did not breed much in the way of vanity. She had always been more self-conscious about her looks than proud, and finding out they probably came tangled together with her magic just made her feel more ambivalent about it all, but this... this she could admire in the tall silvered mirror, and her colleagues couldn't even scoff at her for it. She was participating as an inquisitor after all, a right she had won through her work in King's Landing.

The simple grey hood and robe could vanish into mist or shadow with surprising ease while also being an intimidating thing to see by the light of day, at least usually. Today the crowds would be cheering.... at least she hoped they would be cheering. Gingerly she donned the the little-used steel mask with its vaguely beak-like proportions, wondering not for the first time if it was true the King himself sketched the design to recall the forms of the messenger ravens. Anya liked the little things, and they were dead useful, but it seemed an unlikely honor to bestow upon them.

Looking up over the heads of the cheering crowd, Anya could just barely pick out Mia mostly by her choice to wear bright crimson today, claiming that she was 'in a red mood' whatever that meant. She waved, trying to imitate that sort of all-encompassing gesture she had seen the Princess use once, mostly just looking for acknowledgement from her... friend. The word still tasted strangely on her lips. In the Lawmen there had been people she would trust at her back in a fight, but not one she would trust to stick their necks out for her. Yet after a full month working with Mia through the muck, shit, and blood of Flea Bottom she was starting to believe she had found one. Who if not a friend could have persuaded her that it was a good idea to get beaten up for fun after all? Well, for fun and prizes, but Anya did not really expect to get any higher than she was now. For one she was facing a proper sorcerer, a Scholarum master.

"Well, this is rather closer to being on the wrong side of the Inquisition than I ever expected to be," the blue-robed Tyroshi man opposite to her said, his eyes dancing in mirth. He certainly did not look the part of a bearer of strange and arcane secrets, more like someone's slightly disreputable uncle after just enough wine to make even more entertaining to be around.

"Then we are even. This is closer to a real wizard's duel than I ever want to get," Anya replied, more softly than he. This wasn't something you shouted at the crowd.

"Truly?" Wisdom Horio asked. "How would you rather handle mages, then?"

"From behind while they don't know I'm there," Anya replied.

For some reason he found that extraordinarily funny. "More sense than fifty newly-arrived students put together. A good reason for you to be wearing that," he motioned to her cloak, "While they are still struggling to get out of brown robes."

Unlike in the warriors' matches there was actually a series of bells marking when a mage fight could begin, ringing in an ever more urgent tone until the last peel would mark the beginning of the match. An instant could make the difference between winning and losing in a mage fight. Thus they both waited in silence, counting.

Four rings... three... two....

One.

She wasn't fast enough. As the Tyroshi mage chanted his spell a bolt of white light cold as the depths of the sea flashed towards her, striking her dead in the middle of her chest. Her chain was worse than useless against it, seeming to hold a shadow of the unearthly cold to her flesh. She needed to heal. Calling forth all the power in her belt, Anya sighed as the golden light warmed her enough that her lips weren't blue and her teeth weren't clattering.

Thank the gods for the mask—that image wouldn't help the Inquisition much, Anya thought as she rushed the other mage, knowing she wouldn't have much chance to dodge that if he tried it a second time. Try he did while keeping himself well clear of the swipe of her sword, but he couldn't quite do the spellwork at the same time. The spell died with nothing but droplets of briny water on her face to show for it.

So let's give him something besides me to worry about, Anya thought, letting her mind sink into the sand, below it to the small sparks of life that lived there. Grow, she whispered into a wordless tongue older than man, and grow they did, binding his legs and tripping him up.

It was not very fair to strike a man who was down, but she wasn't a knight to worry about chivalry, she wasn't a lord to worry about honor, she was an inquisitor and hers was the task to get the job down. The vines clutched and pulled, twisted and tore until she found a clear opening with her sword to rattle his brains good.

"I yield," the Tyroshi said, a little wetly through a broken nose. Thankfully he did not seem like he would hold a grudge.

OOC: Anya almost lost in the first round when she caught a cold aspected lightning bolt full on and got reduced to 3 HP, but she managed to heal and Horio failed his concentration roll to cast defensively so that the fluffed barbed chains tripped him and then the fluffed spiritual weapon started hitting him... he just did not have the concentration ranks to get another spell off and that was that.

Huh. The mages start that close to one another? Or did she move up to him while healing?

And DP, please tell me Horio has his 10 concentration ranks at least!

Now I'm looking forward to Ceria vs. Anya.

Pretty fun odds of it happening.

I expect Ceria to give her opponent the zappy whip, and then break their little bones with her hammer while they're writhing on the ground while several thousand volts of white hot agony are coursing through their body.

...maybe I should have toned down her attack spells.

The commentary must be interesting - "and the Tyroshi magister goes first, yes, that's winter's bite, and the inquisitor is hit squarely - is that already the end of the fight? No, they use some healing gimmick, and - that must be a magically enhanced sprint, some good item use we see here and, yes, that attack trips the mage, and the conjured sword - aand he yields. That's been some really tense moments here gentlebeings."

Wait for Anya to also get to lvl 9, then it wouldn't be as lopsided anymore.

BTW, @DragonParadox, Horio is getting a full set of Sorcerer gear we crafted for him this month. It's only fitting that a headmaster of one of the Scholarium branches should be adequately outfitted.

Sarah is getting a set next month, too. Scholarium Instructors have an image to uphold, after all.

It might need a bit of customization to match his stats, though. I'll update his character sheet this evening, if I have time.
