Book 4 Chapter 6: And Far Away
Book 4 Chapter 6: And Far Away:
War is upon the Italian Nation again.

The Italian Northern Defenses Act: Fortifications in the North is seen to be outdated against the now Modern type of Siege warfare through cannons. The Prime Minister, Octavian, recommends the official positioning of Border Security through revitalization of the Fortifications in addition to new Forts developed at Strategic positioning with upgrades (such as the addition of Cannons to the forts) and changes to previous designs to make the Fortress less likely to break down against Cannon fire. (Finishes this turn)

You looked at some of the fortresses…

By God… it was a line of terror that any army would have to cross, and it would take miracles to truly bring forth something so powerful.

Reward: The Army has a +30 to all rolls when on the defensive in Italy.

You looked at the First Minister and the cabinet and felt a weight upon the room that few would ever really… see.

"So… We're really doing this?" You said. "We're initiating a political assassination of a foreign commander."

"It has come to that yes." The First Minister was oddly serious, gone was his mischievous smile and his boisterous attitude. He was utterly… calm and collected. He understood the gravity of the situation.

"And we agreed that no one beyond this room, and the assassin knows of this plot?"

The first minister nodded. "Absolutely." He stated calmly. There is no other way that we can muck about this… the certainty and damage that this action would do to your reputation, and that of Italy was entirely warranted… So nothing will be remembered. No notes, no records, only conversation, and single order."

"And will it succeed?" You asked.

"Nothing is certain." He replied. "But what is certain is this. Do make a habit of this. Your master may have understood the risks of asking this, but I do not approve of this."

"Is that your official capacity First minister, or your personal?" You asked.

"I don't plan to make assassination and subterfuge the official policy of your government." He said.

"I can't promise that, with how chaotic the world has become. But it will have good reasons."
--------------------------

Two weeks later, a captain who had great ambitions was found dead in a shoot-out between himself, and an unknown soldier, an enlisted man he slighted.

He was dead, and not a man worried about it.

Reward: The assassination was a success. Unknown negative effect to the French military.

-[X]The Generals Worry: You need to look at the General's plans, and find out what they will do if War is declared… when it's declared. DC: ??? Reward: You see the Plan. Rolled:D100 + 30 => 35

It was not a good plan. Not a good plan at all.

"We're just going to stay at the fortresses and just wait?"

The General nodded. "As of this point, with the current stratagem, it would be wise to continue that course of action?"

"What about counter-attacking, patroling, scouting for enemy forces?" You asked.

"We are working on it, Sire." He was not nearly as certain as his other statements.

Bare success: The Army is holding fast, and defending only what it can. But doing nothing more. They have ceded the initiative to France.

They got their subsidies, at your expense even.

More guns are needed.

Reward: Beretta is beginning to mass produce its rifles for Italian army service.

Unknown positive effect.

-[X]Of God and Command: Your Master was not just a diplomat without peers, but he is a commander of men, and while he is not as seasoned as other commanders in Italy, he does have immaculate organizational skills. It wasn't much, but you did learn quite a bit from soldiers.

Reward: +1 to command.

You look at the courtiers and smile. "Do I have to do this in this silly dress?"

"It's the latest fashion in England?"

"But we're not in England?!" You protested.

"It would be better for you if you at least looked like you give a shit about the fashions of Europe?"

"I care about the fashions of Italy." You replied.

"Blacksmiths clothing and soot is not the Italian fashion." The courtier smiled.

"Make it Italian fashion then for all I care, I don't want to wear this shit!"

Reward: +1 to subterfuge.

How you would have loved to try and make things better for yourself in the ease of manufacturing these weapons.

Yet… You are stumped by something. And it's just…

Difficult to think of a way to do it.

Failure. +1 to composure.

And Far Away (The Navy Edition): From the Navy… What the hell is that? Rolled:D100 + 30 => 128
D100 + 30 => 89

From The Admirals of the Italian Navy to King Luciano and his CAbinent…

The French Navy will not be a problem anymore. Marines have stormed Marseille by siege and luck, and they have destroyed numerous ships in construction and in dry dock.

And any ships that escaped are fleeing west, towards Gibraltar and the Atlantic. We implore His Majesty to contact the Spanish Government and have them cut off the enemy so that we may destroy them with due haste.

Godspeed.

Reward: The Navy had destroyed much of France's Mediterranean and southern fleet, and the rest were fleeing to the Atlantic, trying to escape.

You have one chance now to destroy France's entire naval capacity in the Mediterranean. Don't waste it.

Y'know, i just friggin' ADMIRE how our Navy looked into the Future, watched the Royal Navy brag about being the undisputed Masters of the Sea and went 'Alright, bet.'
At least, that is the only explanation I can come up with for how consistently awesome they are. That and the Spirit of Admiral Yi Shun Shin traveling back in time to bless our fleet.

Well we're not the masters of the seven seas...

but the Mediterranean is some place we are utterly the masters of.

Because we have never had expeditions in the atlantic yet.

That moment where you want to do the rumor mill, and then see the French and just say…

No I don't think I will now.

Bloody French making this insane and unpredictable.

Charles at least you did something good for humanity

We aren't that lucky.

I think france as a whole rolled just good enough to come out on top, but Their king rolled low enough that he managed to do what should be impossible, and divided the new protestant christians of europe against eachother.

Indeed. The problem with the french kings claims to holiness is, Luthor is still alive to refute his right to claim himself pope king, which means division was inevitable.
Hmm..

Divide and Conquer.

Should we capture the entirety of the Rhone region? It's rich in Coal and Iron from what I remember.
I don't see why not, but we'd have to head to the front to lead ourselves, given our generals just want to hide behind the nice fort we built them.

Marsailles is at the coastal part of the region, since it'll be subjigated to the Naval Treatment, The French may send an army towards it anyway.

If we can use the marines quickly enough, we can capture the river it bodies at the west and north of it, that way we can advance inwards as the enemy is stalled..

However, there may also a chance for us to create another Army focused on the Po-Alpine regions, if the French manages to flank us from the French-Alligned HRE states.

State Governments of the United Kingdom of Italy
State Governments of the United Kingdom of Italy

Principality of Rome

The central state of the United Kingdom and considered the heart of Italy with its capitol located there, the Principality of Rome is the direct personal domain of King Luciano with him and all of his successors to be designated Princes of Rome. It has interestingly been stylized as the legitimate successor state to both the Papal States and Roman Kingdom, in part making Italy the direct heir to the Roman Empire. The governance of the Principality of Rome largely maintains continuity with the administrative divisions of the Papal State with Rome divided into provinces ruled by Governors appointed by Luciano. Unlike in other states, the Catholic parishes in Rome due to formerly being direct vassals of the Pope, swear personal allegiance to Luciano and largely are governed outside of temporal bounds. Rome does not have an autonomous government and submits itself to the laws of the Senate

Kingdom of Naples

The Kingdom of Naples exists as a very unique state within the UK, being a Kingdom within the greater Kingdom with a clause recognizing Neapolitan domestic sovereignty within the Italian constitution. This is due to the unique circumstances of Naple's entry into the union with the state having been an existing Kingdom and the only Kingdom to participate within unification. While the modern Kingdom of Naples under the Medici dynasty had existed for only a short period of time, it's involvement had been critical to the Revolution and it was King Cosmo who launched the final stage of unification with the swearing of his sword to Luciano Graziani. Thus for this action alone, Naples was seen as worthy of granting special priviliges that the other states lacked.

Of the Italian states, Naples is the most traditionally conservative in its administration. It exists as a feudal monarchy with King Cosmo Medici the first existing as sovereign, with lands then delegated to the Church and Cosmo's noble vassals. Due to Cosmo swearing fealty to Luciano as King of Italy, Cosmo's official title is the "King-in-Naples" to show his domain only existing within Naples while abroad Cosmo is referred to as Prince and Luciano the sole Italian King. The only form of democracy is the limited local government in the Neapolitan cities and the election of Senators. Naples has limited priviliges and powers of governance granted to it under the Constitution, but otherwise is a nominal participant in the Italian Senate and subject to its laws. Notably, Naples is forbidden from conducting its own foreign affairs.

Principality of Sicily

The Principality of Sicily is the successor state to the Kingdom of Sicily. The title Prince of Sicily is currently held by King Luciano though there has been some support among the nobles of Luciano granting the title to a hypothetical second son in the future and thus start a cadet branch of the House of Graziani. Sicily is a feudal state divided into counties and cities with daily governance of the island being undertaken by a regent appointed by Luciano who executes the King's will.

Principality of Cyprus

The Principality of Cyprus is a successor state to the Kingdom of Cyprus with King Luciano holding the title of Prince of Cyprus. Due to its critical trade position and the influence of Venetian and Genoese merchants, Cyprus is often considered a mercantile state with merchant houses occupying a seat within its House of Lords, referred to as the House of Councilors. The Cyprus Senate is the main governing body of the island, electing its own Governor to head the state as its Prime Minister who is in turn approved by King Luciano. Special executive powers exist for the Italian King, mainly as a method of keeping Cyprus independent culturally and from economic domination by the mainland.

Principality of Candia-Morea

The island of Crete plus most of Italy's mainland Greek territories, the Principality of Candia-Morea is a Greco-Italian Princpality with King Luciano I as Prince of Candia-Morea. The state is technically a union of the Kingdom of Candia under Venice and the liberated Greek lands from the Italo-Turkish War called Morea after peninsula. The state is as a whole highly autonomous with Candia and Morea mostly governing themselves and within each substate their respective provinces and cities seeing a high amount of devolution and autonomy. Candia or Crete follows the Venetian model with an elected Duke governing the Island alongside a strong Senate and Judicial Council. Meanwhile, Morea was a feudal state with territory divided between native Greek families and recently introduced Italian nobility. Candia-Morea as a whole looks to guidance to King Luciano to settle disputes with the Italian King having the most broad executive powers within the state with only Rome having greater subservience to the King.

Grand Duchy of Savoy

The Grand Duchy of Savoy is a Grand Duchy under the rule of Grand Duke Charles III, also known as "Charles III". The Grand Duchy mirrors the government of Rome with the Grand Duchy having the Grand Duke as its head of state and government, swearing fealty to King Luciano while the legislative branch of Savoy is carried by a Senate with the House of Lords and House of Citizens. Under the leadership of Charles, Savoy has been fairly liberal in granting freedoms and privileges to the peasant class.

Grand Duchy of Milan

The Grand Duchy of Milan is a Grand Duchy under the rule of Grand Duke Francesco II. The Grand Duchy is governed by a system similar to Italy with the Grand Duke as head of state swearing fealty to King Luciano and a Milanese Senate governing from the city of Milan. The Grand Duchy is often considered to be the weakest of the states in noble power due to the high autonomy of the cities and the heavy influence of the merchant class.

Republic of Venice

The Republic of Venice is the state which is often considered to be the most democratic of Italy. The head of State is the Doge, elected by popular suffrage and ruled for life. The Doge shared executive powers with the Signiora who carried out many executive duties and oversight instead of being invested in the Doge. The Doge's powers were defined by the promissione ducale, an oath that each Doge took upon receiving the office and was amended after the death of the previous one. The Senate, recently having merged with the Great Council was a large and extensive body of 480 patrician families and 480 elected officials with varying powers granted to each Senator to either only submit laws, vote on them, or sometimes both. The supreme Judicial branch of Venice was the Council of Forty, nominated and elected by the Senate with final power over criminal cases and judicial review. A growing movement exists to grant the King of Italy the hereditary title of Doge as well as to confer on him or future Doges greater powers.

Republic of Florence

The Republic of Florence consists of the state of Florence, notably having annexed its rivals of Pisa and Sienna during Italian Unification. As the birthplace of Luciano Graziani, Florence has high pride and Italian patriotism, considering itself the true heart of Italy and hearth of Italian Unification to the annoyance of other states. Governance of Florence is overseen by the Gonfaloniere, an elected official chosen by popular suffrage every two years while the legislative branch is split between the Signiora, 27 landed men who are chosen by lottery each year to debate and ratify legislation, and the tre maggiori, 30 men elected by popular will who have the sole power of introducing laws. Since 1434, the office of Gonfaloniere has been monopolized by the Medici though it has faced growing opposition from Sienna and Pisa. The Florence Medicis with the aid of Naples have repeatedly petitioned King Luciano to turn Florence into a duchy.

Republic of Genoa

The Republic of Genoa consists of the Genoese mainland territory and the island of Corsica. The governance of Genoa is largely dictated to the Senate with division between a House of Councilors consisting of representatives from Genoa's leading 28 Alberghi or families which were its most powerful merchant families. The other house saw 28 popularly elected suffragettes. The position of Doge of Genoa was one that was popularly elected with 10 year terms, but the Doge himself was very weak and often considered little more than a figurehead with his main powers being that of patronage for the bureacracy and spending of a limited budget. The King of Italy was given a special position of eternal consul, largely to act as tiebreaker in the two houses, to appoint vacant Councilor seats, veto laws and organize elections for Genoa.

Knights Hospitaller

The only Catholic Crusader Order existing within Italy, and indeed the only Catholic military Order currently existing due to the recent dissolution of the Teutonic and Livonian Orders and the conversion of many of their princes to Catholicism, the Knights Hospitaller govern the island of Rhodes and the East Aegean Islands, being tasked as the first line of defense against the Ottomans and to help patrol the Aegean Sea and bosphorus to keep it clear of pirates and slavers. Technically, territories under the Knights Hospitaller exist under a perpetual state of martial law, though the Knights islands obey all laws and decrees of King Luciano I and the Italian Senate.

The Knights are lead by Grandmaster Philippe Villiers who has overseen the evacuation and safe passage of Knights assets and personnel from Protestant territories. The Grandmaster is elected by a majority of the members who attend the Rhodes conclave. Each island besides Rhodes is ruled by a "Steward-General" who is appointed by the Grandmaster, though the communities on said islands are highly autonomous and are usually left to rule themselves by a local noble or mayorality. The Knights Hospitaller swear allegiance to the King of Italy as their patron and accept all orders from the King of Italy.

Given that historically Corsica, like Sardinia, has a crown attached to it, if Luciano or any future Italian monarch wanted they could claim to be Prince of Corsica as they do with Sicily and Cyprus.

Edit:
Or it could be made the demense of a second or third son for a cadet branch.

Alright, I just want to say this now, before anyone gets mad.

I have plans for the quest to end after this war.

Mostly because I am feeling ready to move on to other things. And maybe do something else.

That being, maybe do an alternate history future quest in this world.
