The airship is great, but everything that comes with taking care of your pet airship is just a lot of stuff I want this quest to not focus on for a while. I'd far rather get a very super cool and indulgent personal reward for Mathilde, and not a reward that will be yet another thing that she'll have to manage every turn going forward.
IIRC, we have the option of asking for a wolfship to be put under our permanent command, fully crewed and paid for IIRC, with a Great Deed.

I wouldn't worry too much about maintaining whatever we get with an Omega Deed.

If we end up getting the skyship, we should take a Mapping action once its ready. Its something we should really get around to doing anyway, and I bet it would be much more comfortable than a gyrocarriage for Project members.

What is the elector countess vote actually asking for lol? What, are we planning to retake Solland or drakenwald and become a countess?
It's asking the Colleges to spend their political influence to ensure that if Mathilde pacifies a sufficiently large section of the Forest of Shadows to an extent that everyone agrees it's an actual functioning part of the Empire now rather than a black space on the map, then that territory will gain the status of a Province and she will be promoted to Elector Countess over it, with the commensurate rights, responsibilities, and runefang.

What it does not do is secure any actual assistance in accomplishing that.

And, yes, this is a QM-approved option in terms of something we could ask for and expect to get. The Empire likes new land, and claiming+holding it for them is, with sufficient political greasing to quiet the border conflicts, worthy of a noble title.

I believe this is the premise:
Dumb idea that Boney is probably going to say "no" to—theres a huge stretch of forest to the north that's technically inside the Empire's borders, but is barely populated and full of monsters.

The people who live in that forest are mostly Hedgewise, who we have a good relationship with (we're also cool with their Goddess).

Inside that forest are three waystone nexuses which are vital to the Empire, but held by the forces of darkness.

There's also a spare Runefang kicking about.

Enter one Mathilde Weber, Elector Countess of the Schattenwald.

I mean, it's not like Nordland and Ostland are using that territory.

If we can conquer it, keep it conquered in the name of the Empire, and reconnect the Nexuses for the benefit of the Empire, then why shouldn't we be it's Elector Count?

The exact lines on the map would be a matter of vociferous debate, and you wouldn't actually get the Runefang or the title until you did those reclamations, but the core idea is one that the authorities of the Empire would be receptive to.

Huh. That actually sounds like an actually pretty interesting plotline to work on. It'd be a hell of a job, but Mathilde's got a lot of talent and connections to throw at the problem.

[X] Elector-Countess

Sure, I'll throw a vote for it. I'm not super invested in a skyship anyways.

[X] Armor of von Tarnus
[X] Mathilde's Flying Circus Knightship MK 2
-[X] ORB: Giant Flying Warship with rooms for Cannon, Knights, Cargo, Research, Research Team, Personal Quarters, a good kitchen, infirmary, sensitive/dangerous material containment, magical anti-air, takeoff points for smaller on-board fliers (Amber wizards wrangle up a number of flying beasts?), and other space for future expansion.
-[X] QUEEKISH BOON: Found a Knightly Order for the ship, equipped with the finest dwarven steel w/ runes, skilled with on-foot operations as well as able to ride atop smaller flying units. (flying beasts/gyrocopter?)
-[X] DWARF BOONS: Assist with the above vis a vis providing the mundane components of the boat + design expertise, knightly orders equipment/armaments, and runework.
[X] Dispensation to study methods of destroying or beneficially transforming Dhar
[X] Elector-Countess
[X] Plan: The Prismatic Wanderer (Researcher ver)

For the people who aren't a fan of an elector countess plotline I'm not too sure what the difference would be action-economy wise compared to the Waystone Project. I imagine we'd have dedicated ruler actions and then regular personal actions like we do with WEB-MAT actions + regular actions

Hochland. It's perfect for Ulgu, it may or may not exist, no one knows anything about it. For all we know the seat could be free.

Everyone assumes there's someone who's Elector Count of Hochland but why would they have ever bothered checking.

We could go decades before anyone realizes Mathilde has that title.

If we end up an elector countess... that means we get actual ck2 advisors. Of our own.

Having our unusually specialized subordinates each present us with a list of options for us to pick from would hit different for Mathilde.

I don't think my heart would ever be ready for the amounts of work that might be necessary to establish an entire province's governmental apparatus after carving out enough space via an extended military campaign. That's a whole other level of management and responsibility.

Like, I can definitely see the appeal of turning the quest into a CK2 game, but I wanna take a break after the Project. Maybe 'finish up' the EIC and hand over the intelligence apparatus to the Hochlander, probably copy all the libraries we have available and get KAU to a point where it doesn't take an action a turn, finish our backlog... then worry about other things to do.

I mean, it's only securing the promise for help with the politicking to make the Forest of Shadows its own Province after we take it. It doesn't compel us to start working towards that goal right away.

[X] Dispensation to study methods of destroying or beneficially transforming Dhar. 'I have seen Dwarven Rune magic that can burn Dhar into nothing or smash it into aspectless rune power, Qhaysh that can unravel Dhar, and the slow transformation under specific circumstances of Dhar into aspectless Earthbound magic, but have been unable to study them lest I fall afoul of the Articles. I would wish to study these and similar things I encounter (though taking care to not impinge upon Dwarven Runepriest secrets) in order to develop a form of destruction or beneficial transformation of Dhar that the Colleges of Magic can use.'

[x] Plan Tower of Doom! and Research!
[x] Support in dispatching Battle Wizards to one major conflict of Mathilde's choice
[x] Plan Mammoth Battle Altar Cavalry/Mammothry

While true, it would exert quite a lot of pressure on the job choice vote to have that permission burning a hole in one's pocket. I could see a short sabbatical/adventure winning over it to give a bit of a breather in the narrative, but—in the world where this wins enough support from readers to win this vote—I can't imagine it being put off in favour of a different long-term job. Not when it presents as one of the grand prosocial megaprojects that readers seem fond of and has sunk-cost going for it.

But we would be committed long-term. It might even be the longest-term commitment possible, here. It'd effectively be deciding a future arc - two, if you assume that the cleansing of the Schattenwald's darkness is a whole big undertaking in itself, followed up by 'now you have to do a Conan and put on the crown'.

I don't know, I like Mathilde being the kind of person that just goes around all over the place helping this person and that. The kind of person that was described by Eike as being a bit like the pegasus in how she goes from one thing to the next. I'm not sure I'm ready for her to pull a Belegar.

Okay, but picture the looks on their faces when we ask them to help us become the Empire's first Wizard Elector Countess. Picture the look on Heidi's face if Mathilde beats Manndred to being a Wizard and Ranaldite with a vote in the Elector's Moot.

It would be so funny. :V

I'm more tempted by the tower and airship than I thought I would be, but they seem best suited for going on an extended sabbatical outside the old world which doesn't really interest me. By my count we've nearly died in combat encounters somewhere between 3-5 times over the course of the quest. The armor doesn't eliminate that but it probably cuts down the odds of it happening before quest end by double digit percentages which to me equates to fun. Also, the jedi Mathilde style looked kinda badass.

I do wonder if in a vote of what to do after the Waystone Project wraps up if attempting to carve out the Schattenwald would be something voters would want. Right now it interests me for a few reasons but I'm not really sure what alternative options would be available

I think talking about the EIC as though it's for intelligence seems to be missing that it's the logistics backbone that of Stirland that sucks up all the room for any merchantly schemes and a diplomatic tool. More immediately importantly though, it's incredibly well-placed to take advantage of silk and is soon to be disgustingly profitable.
