They call him Griffon, Griffon, fiercest at fighting,
No-one you see, is wilder than he,
And we know Griffon, lives in a world full of violence,
Flying like thunder, under the Seal!

Everyone loves the king of the sky,
Ever so cruel and violent is he,
Feast he will do when enemies appear,
And how they cry when he's near!

An airship or flying tower both facilitate adventure, just like the steam wagons did. It'd make it much easier to go to Nehekhara and Lustria, or just the places in the Empire too far for a gyrocarriage to go to without running out of fuel. When we don't need it, we can have it ship cargo around to make us money. It would be great for supporting the campaign on the Silver Road.

I prefer the tower, but I think Eike may enjoy a flying warship.

Hell, I also just want to see what 8 motivated colleges can think of given such a task...
Like we have 8 patriarchs and matriarch ready to throw their All behind this because we solved some fundamental questions about the colleges themselves.

@Boney : would the flying ship be capable of flying to Lustria and/or back in a short-enough time span to make the prospect of trying to study/diplomacy with the Lizardmen something that we could do without staying in Lustria year-round?
Here's a boneypost on timeframes for long distance travel:
Would an airship make travel fast enough that visiting Araby, Ulthuan or Lustria easy/quick enough to be doable on the scale of regular turn actions rather than multi-turn events, the way the gyrocopter does for Old World locations?
No.
Would getting to Lustria or Ulthuan via flying tower be feasible, or is it too slow/too spooky to fly over open ocean in one?
Crossing oceans would be in the weeks to months timespan. It's up to you whether that's too slow or too spooky.

It's too late for a turnaround, but I've found a historical Empire magic item that would've been very good for Mathilde from The Empire 8e: the Ring of Volans.
Once per battle, the wearer can cast any battle magic spell from any of the eight Colour lores. That's an insane amount of versatility.
This would be a serious object of study IC. Is this ring enchanted with literally every spell? Or does it mentally impart wizards with full knowledge of how to cast from other winds while also protecting them from dhar poisoning?

Let us not forget yet another consideration - with a flying ship we can fly directly over Marienburg, bypassing their blockades and tolls and stunting upon them.
I imagine we'd be cautious about doing so lest they actually think it's a preemptive attack or something, but yeah, it's a fun mental image.

The airship is great, but everything that comes with taking care of your pet airship is just a lot of stuff I want this quest to not focus on for a while. I'd far rather get a very super cool and indulgent personal reward for Mathilde, and not a reward that will be yet another thing that she'll have to manage every turn going forward.
I'm pretty sure it won't take up any maintenance. We're not talking about an organization or a difficult-to-tame living being like a gryphon, we're talking about an impressive exploration/warfare vehicle that we're asking the Colleges to put their everything into. Same with the crew, probably - costs will likely get covered by WEB-MAT being a Branch College.

Iirc that snippet of lore is only found in the manowar game but I could be wrong on that.
Not quite.

The Bretonnian navy has cannons in Man O'War, but Man O'War was released concurrent with 4th edition. When the Bretonnian army also had cannons.

Anything close to the modern version of Bretonnia didn't appear until 5th edition.

The bit about 'the rules only say we can't have cannons in the land of Bretonnia, not the sea' is, as far as I've ever been able to tell, complete fanon.

(Also, I've never actually seen anything saying that cannons are banned in Bretonnia, and 2e Knights of the Grail explicitly says gunpowder is legal)

(The Bretonnian nave does use cannons in 4e Sea of Claws, but that's because of the old Man O'War list)

Out of curiosity, for people voting for the right to send Battle Wizards to one conflict of Mathilde's choice, is there any specific engagement people are thinking of? Or is it more of a favor to keep in our back pocket in case something really big pops off that the Empire might not have particular reason to assist in otherwise?

Going by the description of the item, the ring itself hasn't been enchanted, rather it's magical because of its sympathetic connection to a magical book that has all the magical lore of the Colleges of Magic. It's essentially "borrowing" spells from the Book of Volans.

I mean we can already walk off two of those based on our existing equipment- the only one we'd maybe need to be concerned about is the artillery strike. And honestly I kinda want to clarify that.

@Boney, with the armor and our magical defense up, can we survive an artillery attack? Like I figure it would still hurt a lot, but between the belt, the spells and the armour would we survive?

There are dozens of different varieties of artillery, of wildly differing levels of strength. Getting caught in Gnoblar Scraplauncher rain? Probably. Greatcannon to the face? Probably not.

Which reminds me: @Boney: I'm seeing a lot of stuff that could be useful for farmers in our library. Have the K8Ps halflings figured that out yet, or do we need to (I supposed could we have) a social action where Mat introduces (brags) to the K8Ps halfling Elder about all the Books on Agriculture, Watertables, plants and such. And maybe asks if she knows some more studious halflings willing to contribute?

Or would that be a full action, something like: "Ask Elder Hluodwica about how her people are finding the library, and if there are any among them that might contribute time/papers to it." ?

That would be a full action, and one very much outside of Mathilde's area of expertise and which would be stepping rather condescendingly on the toes of a certain character who is currently responsible for this sort of thing.

That sparks a neat idea: Mat and Pan in the library, in either either a teasing argument of "Well why did you file your papers in my library too? Is it not good enough?" or Mat showing Pan where her papers have been archived with pride. Maybe leading her around the library between some of her own favorite additions to the corpus of civilized knowledge.

I mean... Pan probably knows about most of them, but it still different, to walk around a shop/library and see your work realized. Shared and used for the good of others.

This might start happening, but upon learning that Panoramia isn't aware of where her papers can be found, Mathilde takes this as a major failing of her classification system and immediately drops the flirting in favour of investigating what went wrong and how it could be fixed.

Lustria is more than twice as far away as Cathay is. The distances involved are ludicrous. Getting there will always be an effort.

[X] Dispensation to study methods of destroying or beneficially transforming Dhar. 'I have seen Dwarven Rune magic that can burn Dhar into nothing or smash it into aspectless rune power, Qhaysh that can unravel Dhar, and the slow transformation under specific circumstances of Dhar into aspectless Earthbound magic, but have been unable to study them lest I fall afoul of the Articles. I would wish to study these and similar things I encounter (though taking care to not impinge upon Dwarven Runepriest secrets) in order to develop a form of destruction or beneficial transformation of Dhar that the Colleges of Magic can use.'

That option is phrased such to avoid splintering the voting base between people who want them for X fight vs Y fight, letting that decision rest for a subvote. I expect the Forest of Shadows nexuses, the Forest of Gloom nexus, the Silver Road expedition and dwarf/skaven hellwar stuff each have their fans. I wouldn't expect that favour, if it won, to sit idle for a rainy day when it's currently wet everywhere.

Would be nice to see what Pan is up to, and touch base with her work.

Unfortunately her work is s e a s o n a l y slow

We have a social interaction with her coming up shortly.

Chances are good we'll get at least a glimpse there into her current undertakings, given the vantage of said treehouse would allow the pair to look out over everything Pan's been working on in the Caldera.

[X] Armor of von Tarnus

For whatever reason the airship plan doesn't really appeal to me all that much, whereas mega armour or bunch of smaller individual favours is quite appealing.

I'm not entirely sold on all the details, but it's close enough.

[X] Plan: The Prismatic Wanderer
[X] Armor of von Tarnus

Will ditch armor for ship, maybe tower, but not for bunch of smaller stuff.

[x] Rainbow Throng: Full Collegiate Aid to be called upon during one of the campaigns of Nexus reclamation
