Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Im thinking something's wrong here.
He knows we are coming because he can hear us on the phone. And yet this figure is not facing where the threat would be coming from and its face is deliberately obscured.

Schmuck bait.
Specifically, schmuck bait aimed at making all the wizards Lawbreakers and slowing us down.
You may be onto something here.
Good night, see you guys tomorrow with more wizard war.
Can you tell us more of what Molly sees around this guy? Is he really just standing around waving his hands not interacting with anything? What's closest to him other than the phone?

I am thinking - send in the meat shields maybe? Emergency MInion Holograms to call up heavy gurvel infantry with experience in breaching. Make some of them solid.

I need to go run errands for some hours so quick thoughts

1)We have been wondering about where LaFortier was. Theres a non-zero chance that this is him.
I assume that Namshiel might have needed a Senior Council member or a similarly-authorized wizard to open some doors; a chamber with high value divination instruments does not sound like the kind of place thats open to everyone in the Halls.

2) My immediate suggestion is along the lines of
-Countermagic; Molly activated her Occult Excellency during the first encounter, and the duration of an Excellency outside combat is (Essence +1) minutes. Its not been 5 minutes since then, so it should still be active
-Molly physically attacks for non-lethal damage; whoever this person is, they are evidently a thrall and should be disabled ASAP
-Olivia shoots him in the leg with a mundane bullet, just to be sure

So Molly countermagics, and attacks, while Olivia shoots for a disabled limb.
Wizards + Olivia hold their fire.

The fact that Molly didn't get essence from her Urge when she learn that Peabody has tied his life to a senior council member does indicate that it was a lie.

If this ends up being accurate that would mean Tiffany jumped the gun here, probably influenced by her feelings on the Fallen. Though we have FSB so it wouldn't have been the end of the world if the wizards did kill him.

I don't think that's right? She already got an Urge trigger in that scene after using the Crown to find Namshiel. Though she only got it after I asked DP about it. At most I think DP just didn't consider it triggering for that rather than it not being true altogether.

That's a whole lot of essence to spend before we know that the enemy won't go down like a punk. We have quite a few decent wizards with us. The enemy is outnumbered and under Shadow Spite Curse. That a very big handycap even if this Niklehead is 5 times the wizard of any of the wizards we have brought with us. Which seems unlikely.

4 essence feels a bit much if this indeed isn't Namshiel and ends up just slowing us down before we get to him. How are you mathing it to 4 essence, like what are the individual cost?
1 for the charm itself + 3 for solid minions (1 per minion). It's scene long charm, so they likely remain useful. It's expensive, yes, but they can safely walk into the trap.

Isn't it just more cost effective if Molly goes in herself then? She has counter magic, good soak, and the anti shaping charm only cost 1 mote.

We have troops on the scene behind us too so we don't necessarily need more.

I agree with pretty much all of that but pre prepared Magic on a Target is really good at doing a fuck ton of damage that either ignores soak or just completely overwhelms it and well we've already had a trap that would work on our shaping charm and we can't Parry or block waves of Hellfire, yet.

The fact that soldiers last an entire scene means even if they're not immediately useful against whatever thing comes out of this guy doesn't mean thay won't have a use that makes them worth the motes spent.

Edit: missing words

We don't have perfect defenses. And this is a denarian. I'd rather not risk it.
As just discussed we don't actually know that he's a Denarian.

  • We can't see his face.
  • He has a phone right next to him which the voice could be coming from
  • DP said that Denarians count as CoDs way earlier in thread but Demonic Primacy of Essence didn't trigger and isn't in effect right now
  • He knew we were coming through the phone but isn't bothering to face in the direction of Molly even though he knows she's an Infernal and at least has some idea of what that means threat level wise.
  • We don't know where LaFortier is but he does have Council robes due to being a member.
  • Namshiel may have needed a Senior Council member to open that door for him.
  • Denarians have never been dressed this way before onscreen.
  • Earlier Molly made a roll to hear a hiss like air through a pin when on the phone but evidently nothing is nearby that could've made that sound.

No I just think this guy is more of a blunt trap essentially a suicide bomber filled with Hellfire.

We already had two fodder Wizards that were used essentially as a mind layered spell to fuck up anyone who messed with them in a mind fuck way that would trigger our shaping defenses I expect this one to be significantly more blunt and Killy rather than clever. If I know the reason then proximity.

If he's not that then the soldiers will get to show their value in the ensuing combat if he is that then we'll be really glad that we didn't get close to him.

Jumped the gun, was actively misled by a magical effect, or just botched her ID roll. It happens.
No idea which is which yet.

If this is LaFortier, its worth remembering that his death in canon resulted in major internal political complications for the White Council, especially when it was believed that Morgan did it.
So not having other wizards kill him in error is very much a good thing.

Especially since the bad guys have tried to have him killed at least once already in this quest.

Im leaning towards it being LaFortier though, or some other elder wizard for a single reason:
He is carrying no staff or other obvious magical focus. You can cast magic without one, but its significantly harder unless you are older/have a lot more experience. Or are really, really good with magic.

No Denarian has carried one that I can recall, but we also see some wizards not bother.
Listens To Wind, Corpsetaker, Grevane, Cowl, Kumori, the Grendelkin.....

Burning too much resources IMO for a single encounter.
You're burning a third of our Essence pool and 1WP here. It literally costs less to go straight in and have Tiffany heal us later.
At least, thats my opinion.

-[X]Molly Action: Movement
-[X]Molly Action: Attack: Bashing damage. Melee Excellency if necessary. Grab the phone as well, break the camera.
-[X]Olivia: Leg shot
-[X]Retroactive Activation
--[X]Anima + Aspects: Flight + Demonsword + Transcendent Anathema + Surprise Negator
--[X]All Things Betray + Hellscry Chakra: 2m
--[X]Tiffany: Flesh 3: Raise Molly's Stamina to 10 for the scene
-[X]STUNT: The world comes into sharp clarity as you focus, dropping the phone into a pocket even as you reach out with your will the hooded figure, a hand of Essence and will making contact with the ethereal fire of magic and smothering it. You dont turn your head as you bark "Negative ID, Tiffany. Olivia, disable!" You wait a beat for the shot you know is coming, then you move, hilt already in motion for the back of the target's head.

ROLL
Molly Attack roll:
Dexterity 4 + Melee 5 + Stunt 2 = 11 dice at -1DC BSM

Molly Countermagic roll:
Int 5 + Occult 5 + Excellency 10 + Stunt 2 = 22 dice at -1DC BSM OR
Wits 3 + Occult 5 + Excellency 8 + Stunt 2 = 18 dice at -1DC BSM

Olivia Attack Roll
Dex 3 + Firearms 4 = 7 dice at -1 DC Graceful and Crack Shot(no increased DCs from targeting)

STATUS
Essence: 14/18 - ATB 1 - Hellscry Chakra 1 = 12/18
Willpower 6/9
HL 15/15
Soak: Stamina 10 + Ebon Scales 1= 11

RATIONALE
Tiffany raises Molly's Stamina to 10 on the way here with Flesh 3, which raises Molly's Soak to 11(Stamina 10 + Ebon Scales 1) and allows her to not spend Essence on Steelskin or VLE. At Soak 11 and 15/15 HLs while rolling soak at DC4 (6 - 1 Scar Writ Saga - 1 BSM) she can enter and expect to shrug off most damage for long enough for Tiffany to heal her.

All Things Betray for -3DC to Perception rolls.
Hellscry Chakra for detecting Creatures of Darkness, and seeing their auras, just in case Namshiel chooses to use a veil or try to shapeshift into someone else (it was done in Death Rites by Cassius/Saluriel)

We're attacking from behind, ergo surprise round.

Its been less than five minutes since Molly activated her Occult Excellency, so it should still be working.
Ergo, offensive countermagic roll for her is either
Int 5 + Occult 5 + Excellency 10 + Stunt 2 = 22 dice at -1BSM OR
Wits 3 + Occult 5 + Excellency 8 + Stunt 2 = 18 dice at -1 BSM

Whatever the hooded figure is doing, Molly can shut it down hard, then go in and bash them over the head till they are unconscious. Olivia shoots them in the back of the leg to inflict a wound penalty to rolls, then Molly goes in and bashes them over the head.

No Tiffany flashbang because the hooded figure isnt looking in our direction so it wouldnt work.

When we eventually meet Namshiel, we're probably going to burn like 6 motes of Essence in 15 seconds.
We might even have to activate shintai. And we probably need to fight in Paris as well.
So the less we spend before we get there, the better.

(Occult Excellency still active)
The combat ended a long while ago and even if it didn't we engaged in a walk and conversation in that time as well there's no way it's still active.

Other than that while I don't like the idea of face tanking what might be a suicide bomber by all metrics he's already done a clever trap something a bit more Killy is both good for him and better at stalling at this point.

This plan only costs one less Essence then Yogs and put us in direct Danger. Wound penalties are still a thing and I prefer not to deal with them for no reason especially not for one less essence.

1) An Excellency outside of combat lasts (Essence + 1) minutes.
Molly is Essence 4; that means the Occult Excellency lasts 5 minutes. We stopped by the thralls for maybe 15 seconds for Tiffany to stabilize them. We've been on the phone since then. Maybe one minute, two minutes if you're generous.

In that time, a jogging party with Dex 1 would have covered 600 yards, or almost a third of a mile.
There's no way this place is a third of a mile from the ambush site.

2) Thats our job. Thats why we're here instead of in Paris, to tank for the wizards. Thats why we brought a healer in Tiffany.
At Soak 11, we have as much soak as we usually average with VLE+ Steelskin at Stamina 3.

We have By Pain Reforged for reducing wound penalties.
And Molly has a surprise negator running specifically for surprises.
AND we have a shintai panic button.

To do the math offhead, Soak 11 at DC4 will on the average soak 8HL of damage.
That means that a 20 Damage bomb with average rolls at DC6 would deal 8-10HLs of damage. Basically Molly would soak it all, or take around 2 HP of damage.

3) No, my plan as written costs 2m. 1m for ATB, 1m for Hellscry Chakra.
Yog's costs 4m, 1WP.
