Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Eyes on the Ground, Eyes on the Prize
COMMENTARY
Interesting.
Karrin Murphy having people in her corner to prevent her getting screwed by department politics can only be a net positive, assuming that they are on the up and up.

That said, the way they sprung that on us very much vindicates my decision to walk away and only engage after we get more information. That feels very much like how competent Federal criminal investigators operate, and it makes my back itch like there's a target on it.

Looking at the social rolls, I suspect we made an impression.
Because Im pretty sure that Ms Von Trier hasnt had a harder interview subject this year.
Possibly this decade.

We probably gave off fewer tells than Dresden would have.

The fact that Harry said they seem to have the Warden briefing on last October is a point in the Library's favor.
That said, he is a senior Warden commander. He should be able to ask and know if they have it, not just get by on impressions.
Sometimes I think he forgets exactly how much official clout he wields now.

====
Looking at the math?
Dexterity 4 + Craft 3(-1 out of specialty) + Excellency 6 + Without Honor 2 + Stunt 2 = 16 dice.
BSM -1DC.

Hmm.
Assuming DC6 to make diamonds, that would be fairly reliably get us 10 successes on a roll.
Let me take a look around.

I continue to dislike the attempts to game CCC.
For my part it seems like the sort of thing it makes sense to do in controlled environments since infernals have so many niche conditions on all of their good effects relative to other celestials.

In a way it's sort of an explanation of why the villain's lair would be some stereotypical half abandoned castle, run down warehouse, or something like that rather than a penthouse apartment with glass walls. I'm not sure how deliberate it was, but the route to power being in setting up unpleasant and often nonsensical equipment does have that effect.

That said, doing it in combat or any situation we don't have under our control from the outset is crazy. The risk of something like turn loss in high level combat or someone exploiting our empowerment conditions against us is too high.
I wish that we have put a cyberdevil in their cell phone. I want to hear it.
It would be cool, but they actually seem competent enough to not become takeout for the first supernatural creature they meet, so I don't think we can get away with it as easily as we could with Daedalus.

Edit: typo

There should be charms that let us recover essance from the following

*Explaining our powers, abilities or future plans especially in monologue form
*Put someone in a deathtrap
*Kill a minion

Someone should just write up the hell of bond villains. Although there should be a better name.

Better; essence recovery on a drip every minute they're in the trap without without actually dying.

The Hell of Unfulfilled Drama Students?

Maybe The Hell of Daddy Issues since that seems like a probable cause for half of what anyone on any side does in those movies.

More likely per scene Exalted tends to work better when you don't use objective units of time.

Sort of hard to balance that. It would encourage putting someone in a cage that has the minimum requirements to count as a death trap.

Maybe the prisoner has to always believe at every scene that they won't live out the scene?

The hell of villainous breakdowns. It actually follows the formula. The Hells were all originally made to redeem sinners and the third act breakdown is a requirement for the character development of pure evil villains.

You mean like the cells with rusty chains, rats, and human bones in them from cheesy old movies? :V

Still point taken, how about 2 essence a minute up to the victim's essence rating or equivalent in minutes? Keeping objective time since it encourages monologues but makes the charm useless once you start counting time in combat turns.

The hell of the 3rd act breakdown

All of the hells were originally made with the purpose of redeeming sinners and although they have gone far from their origins the signs are still clear in this hell. The hell of the 3rd act breakdown was made for the redemption of the completely unrepentant. Those who did evil knowing that it was evil for selfish motivations confident that they would never pay any consequences for their actions.

Between just you and me (•)
The infernal has learned the great therapeutics methods from the darkest of villains
System: Once per Scene the infernal may gain a mote of essence by
  • Explaining details of their abilities to someone who doesn't know them
  • Explaining their true future plans (if this triggers the Infernal will lose a temp willpower if they change plans without telling them first)
  • Putting a victim into a death trap
If the Infernal does all of these 3 things in a single scene and leaves the area before the victim dies then they gain 3 motes and restores a point of temporary willpower.

Evil Laughing method (•)
The Infernal finds true merriment in the completion of her schemes and freely shares it.
System: When the Infernal restores a point of temporary willpower by any method (ex filling an intimacy) they may laugh evilly in jubilation any minions who laugh with them share in their joy and also restore a temporary willpower.

We aren't so different you and I (•)
The Infernal knows what makes them tick and by extension what makes others tick. It takes one to know one.
System:
Whenever the Infernal does a read intentions check if the target shares any intimacies with the Infernal the Infernal automatically learns of them. When targeting those shared intimacies in social combat the Infernal may pay one essence after rolling to double the number of successes.

Villainous dark matter (•)
Villains may lose, but schemes are forever
System: If the Infernal has bought any backgrounds then even if they lose them somehow - treasure stolen by the heroes, base destroyed, cult slaughtered- they do not lose them from their character sheet. Somehow the equivalents of equal value will come into the Infernals possession. Finding new treasure, finding a new base or a new cult. At the beginning of each arc the Infernal may refund all their backgrounds and use the XP to buy new ones. The XP used to buy this charm can also be used to buy more background.

Greater Evil Reveal (•)
The Infernal is never the lessor evil and her foes should recognize that fact.
System: Whenever anyone feels antagonism towards another target the Infernal can redirect that antagonism to herself as a reflective action. When used in combat the foe becomes incapable of attacking anyone, but the Infernal unless the Infernal is included in the attack.
This act will even change all relevant negative intimacies the foe may feel towards the other target to focus on the Infernal.

Scripted Encounter Defeat (•••)
Reading fate's script, the infernal tears out a few pages and substitutes their own.

System: On their first meeting with a character with no less than half their own essence rating (or equivalent) the infernal may choose to spend 2 essence to mirror any supernatural enhancements the target creature uses for the duration of the scene, save that they stack freely with the infernal's own abilities even if they otherwise wouldn't for the source. The infernal cannot use this ability to kill the targeted creature, and takes 4 unsoakable lethal damage if their actions indirectly lead to them dying within the same scene.

Using this in any scene where a previous target is present, even if they themselves are not selected a second time, gives them the benefits of any excellencies the infernal has running that scene when rolling against them.

Self Disposing villain (••••)
Most heroes are weak and cowardly, unwilling to kill the villain in the end. This charm allows the Infernal to take advantage of this tendency
System: Once per story arc if the Infernal would die they instead gain one last turn of action if the Infernal can find some means that would at least plausible kill them or lead to their body not being found within that turn and take it (Ex Jumping off; a tower, into the sea, a pit, a fire, etc) then their body will disappear only to reconstitute at the end of the arc with full health in a unknown safe place of the ST's choosing. This charm may also be triggered early before the Infernal would die.

Perfect.

I'm envisioning a bunch of stuff like this and a few really good charms that require the bad ones as prereqs to acquire that make the user a veritable supernatural cockroach. Somehow they keep failing spectacularly, but always walk away with their lives and just enough resources to build up for another go.

Stuff like a perfect defense whose flaw is suitably ironic attacks based on the infernal's current schemes.

If you write up any charms for that hell put them up I am bookmarking that post.

You do not want to work with carbon in a liquid oxygen enviorment. Carbon + oxygen is the building block for combustion. A pure oxygen + carbon enviorment, much less carbon submerged in liquid oxygen, in a box is essentially a bomb. If any part of it reaches any sort of energy density to spark it would be rapidly and explosively exothermic as not only does the material combust, but the added heat would set off a pressure explosion as the oxygen evaporates suddenly.

If you write up any charms for that hell put them up I am bookmarking that post.

Limelight Desperation Prana: The infernal drinks deeply from butter well of the unlucky and untalented, gaining something of their senses.

System: Make a perception + expression check against a difficulty matching the average willpower score the other entities in a scene. On success gain the ability to detect where their attention falls in some thematic way, such a spotlight or the sound of applause emanating echoing off their focus points.

While this charm is active the infernal receives -1 difficulty while doing anything that turns that focus towards the user, +1 difficulty whenever it is turned away from them for any reason.

Plot Armor Aegis: The infernal wraps themselves in their assurance of their relevance to the world at large, and refuses all things that threaten it.

Attacks miraculous deflect off armor, crack shots inexplicably miss, or the infernal simply coincidentally steps out of danger at the last moment.

System: Reflexively spend 1 essence in response to an attack to perfectly defend against it.

Flaw: Attacks with an element of irony, significant melodrama, or that would cause the infernal to involuntarily disrupt their own plans (such as a gunshot that makes them drop a briefcase of blood diamonds or a mage remotely detonating a bomb the infernal themselves planted while they're still in range) will pierce this defense.

Scripted Encounter Defeat: Reading fate's script, the infernal tears out a few pages and substitutes their own.

Silly bullshit? Yes. But it'd be a riot at the right kind of table.

Edit:

One more, just for fun:

Ballistic Acumen Tithe: Drawing on the powers of their subordinates, the infernal can boost their skills with any form of ranged weaponry that they can use to inhuman heights.

System:
Once a creature has submitted to the infernal and become its minion their ranged weapons are taken into account in a running average covering all such minions.

The infernal may spend one essence and draw up to that many bonus dice to their checks in the relevant skill for the rest of the scene. However, all minions will lose that number of dots in the related skill while this charm is in effect.

Just to have something to explain storm trooper/action movie goon aiming skills.

This is mechanical unclear. So any action the Infernal does with goal of taking the spotlight has -1 difficulty (incidentally this charm would be terrible for any tabletop game with a party) that is clear. But the the +1 difficulty when it is turned away isn't really clear when it would apply.

Plot Armor Aegis is might be balanced, but I find it kind of boring. I know that it is in the same style as the source book, but I generally hold homebrew to a higher standard.

Scripted Encounter Defeat should include some sort of caveat that the Infernal isn't allowed to kill their target that scene. Scripted boss battles beat the heroes, but never kill them.

[X]Plan Diamond Eyes
-[X]Market research: Consult with Thomas, and online with cyberdevil help, what diamond qualities are currently most in demand and most likely to move fast.
-[X]Shopping: ~$20 for 40 pounds of charcoal at Lowe's, ~$10 for plastic container(s). Propylene glycol(antifreeze) at $70/gallon: $100
-[X]Borrow outdoor garage/workshop again. Shoo jawas away for the duration.
-[X]Tool Constructs to prep workshop, prep coal and produce dry ice(CO2) in containers around the room to drop room temperature and activate Without Honor
-[X]Antifreeze(propylene glycol) soak to activate Boiling Sea Mastery
-[X]Tool Constructs + Crafting Excellency + All Things Betray for diamond manufacture and cutting
-[X]TLF is active to ignore environmental damage from cold or CO2 concentration
-[X]Cyberdevil aid as necessary,
-[X]Tool Constructs for cleanup
-[X]STUNT: Shooing both Alicia and Mathew away from the door to the outdoor garage with alternate promises and threats, you lock the doors behind you and begin to change into your presoaked work clothes. As you do so, a dense, smoke-like fog swirls around your feet, coming off the containers of dry ice emplaced at the corners of the room and along some of the walls and imbuing the room with a chill at variance with the late summer heat outside. You focus on what you want, and reality bends to your desires, as specialized machinery begins to unfold, filling the room with forges, blinking readouts and swiveling cameras, dominated at one end by a big high resolution screen. Setting Clippy in a Essence-forged docking cradle, you turn on the radio and get to work.

Essence Costs
TTC for prepping workshop and materials: 1 Essence
TTC for fabrication and cutting: 1 Essence
Crafting Excellency: 1 Essence
All Things Betray for improved Perception: 1 Essence
TTC for cleanup: 1 Essence

Total: 5 Essence

RATIONALE
Dexterity 4 + Craft 3(-1 out of specialty penalty) + Excellency 6 + Without Honor 2 + Stunt 2 = 16 dice.
Cyberdevil aid: ??
BSM -1DC.

All Things Betray may or may not count for another DC reduction

Dry ice sublimates at roughly five to ten pounds an hour at room temperature. But you can make it from atmospheric air.
So use TTC to liquefy air, extract CO2 and just pile that up in containers at the room edges.
When done, the rest can be disposed off in the sunshine.

Cyberdevils provide advice and aid in monitoring multiple BARS apparatus, potentially increasing the number that can be operated simultaneously, and as a second opinion when cutting. Since we already have WoQM that TTC can duplicate appropriate computer equipment, having TTC spawn a big computer setup with 8K screens, multiple highres cameras and give Clippy and the other cyberdevils with an internet connection access to it.

The idea with the first was a watered down variant on the dark sight charm. While it's active you get a difficulty reduction while most people in the scene are paying attention to you, but if it drifts difficulty goes up for everything instead until you get it back or the scene ends.

Fair point on it being bad for a table though, these are primarily meant as gags to make the character act like a cheesy villain so I didn't really optimize for anything else.

I think plot armor has more potential than you do though. The effect isn't itself flashy, but once someone works out the flaw it encourages doing stuff that doesn't normally make sense to try.

Breaking golden finger's hands with bullion in a sock, tackling them out of a helicopter and trusting your soak over theirs, pulling all the pins on a mad bomber's bandolier of grenades, that sort of thing.

Fixed scripted encounter defeat though.

To a certain extent I feel like there should be more charms that reward fun game play. I feel like questers are often very conservative and risk adverse so they need to be incentive to have fun.

Plot Armor Aegis seems like it would lead to the questers constantly second guessing themselves because they don't want to leave any chance of dramatic irony.

I guess it's the difference between charms that are fun for playing against the villain and being the villain.

[X] Plan "Excellence unmatched"
-[X] Consult with Thomas what sort of diamonds (quality, sizes, colors, etc) would be best to make
-[X] Before starting the production, investigate various techniques of diamond making together with your Cyberdevils, in order to find the best ones for your purposes
-[X] Commandeer an outdoor workshop. Use Tool Transcending Constructs to make large ice blocks (find or make some empty barrels to place them in) to lower internal temperature enough to trigger Without Honor, Without Hope
-[X] Use oil, machine oil, or bleach to trigger Boiling Sea Mastery while working
--[X] Use disposable working clothes that you don't mind getting dirty, and use Tool Transcending constructs to clean up afterwards
-[X] Make an electronic padlock controllable by Clippy to trigger Cracked Cell Circumvention while working
-[X] Use crafting excellency
-[X] Use All Things Betray (pay willpower) for quality control to increase the efficiency (to discard diamonds of low quality at early stages of production)
-[X] STUNT: "Well, no turning back now. Clippy, lock me up please, until I make this month's quota. And put on some music." you say, as the padlock on the door behind you blinks red, indicating that you are now confined to your workshop. The air around you is crisp and invigorating, the freezing temperature maintained by large columns of ice in the corners. They should last for hours, especially with your chilly aura going full blast around you. Your hair glistens with machine oil, threatening to stain your work clothes. From the light of your soul, strange machinery starts to unfold, ready to create on the level hardly imaginable by mortal men, even if inspired by their techniques you spent the evening before researching.

    [X] Plan simple and effective
-[X] With TTC construct a huge room-sized sufficiently thermally isolated fully enclosed container and fill it with liquid oxygen mixed with solid oxygen slush. Molly will craft inside, fully submerged, allowed by WHWH and getting +2 dice from it. Huge size means no active cooling needed, melting of solid oxygen and slow evaporation of liquid oxygen would provide all the needed cooling. Gets us -1 difficulty from BSM, gets us essence replenishment from CSR as pure liquid oxygen is toxic even without the cold.
-[X] Use CCC for further -3 difficulty.
    -[X] Use excellency.
-[X] Craft for as long as possible, repeat if needed.
-[X] Aim for maximum quantity of high quality grade artificial diamonds, there is a thriving marked for them at that time and they are easier to sell.
