Damn, that's unfortunate. Poor Tobho, poor Gendry... :(

I don't think we should keep Gendry completely in the dark on this. Otherwise, that leaves a potential avenue for manipulation dangling out there that might be used to leverage Gendry in the future. Maybe we could go with the option to tell him once he's back on his feet and in a better headspace?

So, working from the idea that this is about Gendry, what can we do?
It's useless to play the game of "he expects us to do X, so I'll do Y, but he'll expect that too, so try Z" against Asmodeus himself.

So, all things being equal and the devil's plans being unknowable, I'll go with what I think is the best for Gendry.

We can't allow this secret to be used against him some time in the future. The knowledge will still be used in the same manner of course, but it is hopefully less impactful if he got used to the basic idea by then.

It was probably captured by the Brass Ballsack and then sold to Old Red.

This was deliberately planned
Probably, but it could also be the action of some enterprising Efreeti. The attack would have been a good opportunity to snatch some souls to sell under the table, if one has the necessary resources to make it work. Gotta spend money to make money, ya know?

It's probably because he was one of the last people capable of working Valyrian steel besides the Qohori and Gendry's master. A valuable soul for someone who wants a powerful mystical connection, especially to someone who might be able lead a decent rebellion against us if they were given the means and motive.

I mean, every smith that took our classes on ritual-smithing knows that.
And, as you say, propably quite a bit more Qohori.

True, but for a long time he was the only person in Westeros who could do it, and I assume most of those Qohori are dead by now given the Eldritch Horrors that have been living there for the past several years. I'm sure the souls of those who use magic are much more tasty than normal ones. Also probably more useful for making horrific abominations against nature.

I kinda doubt it.
Qohori exiles who knew something of their secret forge-magic were always rare, but never unique.
You could propably find one or two in any major Free City.

Wrong to keep secret and we can't have it used against us.

Might be push needed to unlock his magic too and give him personal quest.

@DragonParadox, FYI people generally didn't take notes on parchment as it was rather expensive + impractical. Apparently things like wax tablets were more common, or chalk/ash on slate or whatever.

Just a quick theory: are we certain this was targeted? There were others with more knowledge who died, e.g Valeria. I assume some Ifrit took a few souls (we probably don't know most since we tried resurrection only for a fraction of the dead) and Asmodeus saw an opportunity.
Also: if they had the opportunity, why didn't they take higher priority targets? Ignorance?

If it wasn't targeted, why Nessus, why Asmodeus' own keeping?

A random smith captured for the formula for Imperial Steel would more likely be in Dis or Avernus.
