If we play it safe, we're going to have a hard time getting ahead of the people who are going to try to keep us down on principle. Playing it Safe is the expected approach, and you don't get far as a First Generation Cultivator by playing it safe.
With regards to playing it safe I agree that we need to take risks in order to succeed as a first generation cultivator. However that does not mean always take the riskier/higher reward option. That route will be more likely to result in failure than purely playing it safe. And we are already taking an non-safe route. We are attempting to form diplomatic ties with a brand-new (to the empire) nation that has a second hostile nation in between. In addition we have gone all in on this project, thus the stakes are raised. The comments that we have received from the nobles showcase the risk we have taken - both the comments showing concern and thus highlighting the risk we carry as well as the other comments that show the lack of respect several of the nobles have us and our project.

Our big project is a high risk one. Thus it is reasonable and sensible to play it safe in other areas so as not to risk the failure of the diplomatic outreach. This doesn't mean never take other risks, but that we must consider them more carefully since we have greater responsibilities and less to fall back on.

1 or 3 are both managable.

Damage control for 2..I've no idea where to even start

Well, damage control for 1 is just as unmanageable as 2. Arguably even slightly worse, since Hanyi's pissed off about us stealing her spotlight on top of the performance being a failure. It's just half as likely to come to damage control. 20% is still pretty darn high though, honestly.

Because yeah, there's not really much room to recover from failure, here. Not when it's the first, most prominent, event that's been given the approval of a viscount. Or when Hanyi's performing was given the tacit endorsement of a count clan's court representative. When the valley region's nobility are assembled for the event. When we've committed to attempting to sort out the trade road issue in the region and a failure here undermines that. When the year-end tournament is just weeks away and a huge political event, including where we next followup on the trade road.

Messing up here is too close to out of the gate and too close to our next major political opportunities to really recover from. Don't have the inertia to keep moving or the space to shake it off. It's full wipeout territory. Taking the risk puts every one of our objectives in jeopardy, including the project we'd be prioritizing by taking the risk. Doesn't make sense.

Risking embarrasment in public is different from risking horrifying injuries, and lot worse in many ways when it comes to politics.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. While my heart says go for 2, given the stakes involved and my XCOM trained probability curve--when "All the marbles" are on the table, you don't ante up for a chancy bet when you have a safe one that lets you take half the pot and go home anyway.

Option 1 is not an option.

While I'm somewhat tempted by option 3, I really want to see Hanyi Growth. So, option 2 it is.

To all those who did not pick option 2:

In regards to the arguments pushing that consequences for option 2 is unsalvageable, we must also remember that the benefits gained from succeeding is also High. With success, LQ's rep with the clergy who the saboteur wants us to alienate now increases and also proves our competence at spirit appeasement to the naysayers in the group sent by the clergy, ESPECIALLY Yanlin for those who picked 3 just to stick it to her. We must remember that not all of the clergy are against us here, we would want to maintain positive impressions with the clergy(people specialized at spirit appeasement) if we want to continue doing these sort of tours without any interference from them in the future. Option 3 immediately removes any chance of this happening despite the 100% success rate, it also incurs a mystery consequence due to us following our saboteur's plans and may lead to even further obstruction by the clergy throughout the tour. In this case option 2>1>3, as despite 1 resulting in reduced benefits for HY's tour and annoying her, we are able to increase our rep with the clergy with a 4/5 and smoothen future deals with them. Option 2 gives us a rep increase with the clergy at a 3/5 along with happy HY for the duration of the tour without the demerits from 1.

With option 2(helping HY with the prepping), it gives her another chance to grow with the FFS+ coming up soon. This is a rare growth opportunity for HY(that is even confirmed in-Quest) as it is hard for winter spirits to grow due to growth being the anthesis to ice spirits in general. It also helps alleviate LQ's fear that her growth is leaving those she cares about behind as HY would have further reinforced her path or even taken a step forward in her cultivation, allowing her to more potent of a factor in combat.

Growth in Xianxia is something that must always be pushed for.

"I cannot help but wonder at your motives, Baroness. Your bound spirit has been crass and disrespectful from the start," the priestess sniffed.

"You started being a jerk the second you walked in," Hanyi muttered under her breath. Ling Qi scattered the sound on her wind, but frowned herself.

"She does seem more hostile than a mistake would warrant," Sixiang muttered.

I just want to point out, the priestess' hostility is likely because we're encroaching on her turf. From her perspective, she's frustrated at not being able to fulfil her job and the long chance of fixing the winter issue looks like it'll cause her even more issues. Her attitude is fairly well justified and points more towards prickled pride than involvement in sabotage imo.

She also probably doesn't appreciate an upstart young noble is taking an important and delicate sacred ritual and turning it into a publicity stunt.

Consider:

If Ling Qi goes off to negotiate with the tenth spirit personally rather than taking instruction about the performance and then succeeds, she's just cut the clergy out of their job entirely.

We don't need to fail or beat up the spirit to make the clergy mad, here. Doing their job and better is bad enough. I wonder if that's where the greater understanding of power is coming from?

Ling Qi is almost uniquely suited to feuding with priests.
We should try not to do that, but if it comes to that, Ling Qi is quite capable of going without clergy for extended periods, especially when the fief is still very small.

The directions were totally left out on purpose, this is someone playing political games either against the clergy or against Cai and Ling is jsut stuck in the middle.

That goes back to my question that I brought up before. @yrsillar is this a local clergy or is the High Priestess in charge of spiritual affairs for the whole region? Are we gonna have to deal with a pissed off clergy wherever we go for during this tour because the daughter of the Viscount has that much influence over this whole area?

The damage to reputation is probably only for the regional nobility and clergy, as well as those directly involved. It is unlikely that the head of the Meng will worry about some small stream spirit at a distant valley getting angry because of some baroness spirit performance

This won't affect all our relations with nobility and clergy. It will affect this area, and maybe Bao Qian

If it was against Cai they'd make some play more directly against CRX, not us. I think this is someone who is against both CRX and LQ.

The high priestess of this temple which is regionally important. Not the whole province though

Now that I know she has an important position I completely lost any sympathy I had for her, If her first reaction to a new baron trying to setup an event that helps her being sabotaged is jumping down their throat and questionning their integrity, how the hell did she get so high in the clergy ?
