with good chances the Skaven take out at least the gunnery school according to the celestials.

This has come up a few times now, but this isn't actually what she said.

"And do take good care of that Gunnery School you've got down there. It could be very needed in the years to come."

The Celestial Matriarch was commenting on the K8P Gunnery School, not the one in Nuln that Mathilde had no influence over at the time. 'It could be needed soon' is also a rather far sight from 'the skaven might take it out soon'.

Yeah, we might need the K8P gunnery school soon together with "Hey we poked the Skaven here at Nuln and they are going to poke back, help?" implies to me that the original school might cease to be available.

On children: you know, people who want a child and people who want an apprentice might be able to combine forces: watch new Grey College apprentices until a suitably young child is taken in, ask to become that child's Master, and officially (or all-but-officially, if we prefer) adopt them. Once the child grows up a bit, we can even do a bit of Rick and Morty style adventuring as preparation for the Journeying.

My two actual favorites

[X] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor
[X] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred
[X] Governor-General of Swamp Town
[X] Border Princess of the Howling River

These ones are more for curiosity.

Later that day, far behind you:

"What do you mean, she's gone?" the Longbeard asks in disbelief.

"What do you mean, the High King's here?" Snorri replies.
Glorious.

The emperor is super important long term, the skaven situation is super important short term, loremaster-at-large just plain sounds fun, and the waystone project tickles my research fancy.

Ambassador means having to favor the empire over the dorfs sometimes which I don't like, swamp town means cutting ourselves off from everyone, and border princes is probably permanent.

Heh, so the High King was, in fact, waiting for us at Pragg... but Mathy missed him because she was impatient and didn't want to deal with traffic. That is absolutely hilarious.
Okay if Mathilde has a child with Panoramia using a sperm donor, I'm sorry, but Egrimm van Horstmann must be the father. This is non-negotiable :V
Agreed. If we can't out and out romance him, we can at least have his child. :V
More seriously, there's probably not many other guys Mathilde respects and finds intriguing enough to trust the other half of her kids' genes to that aren't dead or biologically incompatible. Johann is the only one that really comes to mind. Well, maybe Algard or Dragomas, but that's not exactly the kind of question you ask your boss, let alone the boss of your boss.

It could be needed soon [because Skaven will blow up the one in Nuln]

Also didn't the celestial, when Mathilde asked, tell her that omens/prophecies could be shoehorned into the thing you worried about. Yaknow the whole self fullfilling part.

[X] Count of Sylvania
[X] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland

A thorough reading of the complete, uncensored Liber Mortis. A Dwarven soul in an incarnation of an Umgi. A wizard. Sylvania.

Nothing could possibly go wrong.

Yup.

[X] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland
I could see this working. Mathilde would be one of the most competent non-vampire administrators Sylvania has had in a very long time. And magic in a ruler is not quite seen as a curse in Sylvania, the way it is other provinces.

[X] Governor-General of Swamp Town
I need to know more about this, solely for curiosity.

Consider just how many factions would love to have access to the power of the network, who would want to sabotage or hijack our efforts. Just off the top of my head;
  1. Necromancers using them to power their black rites
  2. Black magisters infiltrating the colleges who want to turn our studies to the work of their dark masters
  3. Druchi who want to piggyback off our efforts to harm the vortex itself
  4. Vampires in the service of Nagash wishing to tap into this vast source of power
And that is just the explicit destro factions. Here's a bonus:
  1. A faction of revanshist Asur could try to stop us from giving too much power to the Karaz Ankor
  2. A regenerate Liche Priest could be convinced that the secret to eternal life lies in the works of elder races
When your job is 'poke the elder magic that keeps the wold going' there are going to be a lot of people willing and able to get in your way.
Waystone research and Waystone defense are not at all the same job, especially early on. Once we can tap into the Network well enough that we get pinged early on whenever someone tries to do shenanigans, only then will we be more directly involved in their defense than literally any Journeyman or Magister actually in the area where said shenanigans are being attempted.
To start with we'll probably set up exactly four research camps (baseline well defended Waystone in the Empire, interestingly different well defended Waystone in the Empire, K8P Waystone in probably Nar or maybe somewhere less populated, minor energy channeling Karaz Ankor Waystone somewhere close to K8P) and not leave that place except to procure resources, experts or information or in pursuit of unrelated side projects.

The above of course ignores the possibility that BoneyM introduces some non-obvious mechanism or complication in order to keep the Quest interesting enough for everyone involved even if we go down this path.
Also, many other quests don't allow you to vote for more than one thing
As if we don't already have enough First Past The Post voting IRL...

The thing is all those people will have reason to come after us and while the elves and the Liche priest might not be able to find out about us by any means short of the metaphysical, the same is not true of the others. Simply put looking for the information could itself tip off our enemies.

Waystone Project means elves and dwarves in the same room.

We need all our diplomacy to not end that with a shaved beard and grudges without any further complications.
