I vote for both (if possible) he would be the Paper-Pushing Prince during the war, or at least the opening portions where logistics are a mess. Also I just can't see detatching a significant size force (which will be needed traveling into unknown/dangerous lands) to transport the Equestrians home while during a major campaign. After the war or at least while it's in the ending stages, then Equestrian Introductions will come into play.

100%, the facts of the matter is that right now our empire is held together on the strength of the Emperors legend, when he passes on there's going to be a lot of unrest. Additionally the times of conquest are ending, as we discover more of the world. It's important that when Gawain ascends to the throne that the empire does not stand alone against the world. We will have enough problems without adding foreign adversaries to the mix.

First off Ki is a great friend! Gentle when needed, tough when pressed, but smart enough to know when and how.
Really, Isabella might be emotional support, Sebastian might be the brain and sisters might be family (and HOLY he's the only boy! how did I miss that o_O ? ), but sometimes you need your peer. Peer young Ki Seong marvelously provides.

Really of all his close contacts, she is the one he's most similar to.

[ ] Prince Incognito: Stupid? Certainly. Dangerous? Unfathomably so. But it's the only way he'll ever see a battlefield, and if that's the price he has to pay, then so be it.

Ok, the first plays into Gawains insecurities. Don't get me wrong, good strategies and great soldiers win the battle/war, but as Ki, history, and analysis shows, logistics is more than half the battle (I'd even say without logistics war as we and griffins know it would be flat out impossible).
And Gawain knows this intellectually. Emotionally and subconsciously though he needs something else, cause this STILL falls under "Emperor's shadow" so to speak.

Incognito. A fun risk option. Fail and it's monumental idiocy. Succeed and it's a 'victory'... but then again the reputation would be horrendous. Oh, sure, a great tale of legend but it also shows that the future Emperor will take such unnecessary and possibly outright stupid actions it'll be a miracle for others to NOT expect a "Gawain" (synonym, means "insane stupidity").

Diplomacy. What Gawain needs is a distinct identity that's not "Emperors' son/prince/shadow/puppet/etc".
And with the Equestria expedition, it is possible.
Make no mistake, they will traverse a hostile nigh-unknown territory, with limited supplies and VIP that need protection. While nothing like war, Gawain would still need to show his chops as a fighter and commander, before they reach "friendly" territory.
And then he needs to be a diplomat that convinces a bunch of unknown (perhaps easily triggered) herbivores that have f*ing demigods that control Sun and Moon!

There's gonna be a lot of diplomancing once this war is over and I think it'd be fantastic to help cement Gawain's reputation in that regard as we move forward.
It is important enough for Gawain to gain a sense of accomplishment, inform us on the Alicorns and Equestrian politics, and will receive higher positivity as sending the Heir of an Empire for a delegation meeting is pretty big and holds a decent amount of weight for First Contact of Governments.
Let's not try to pull a Mulan.

It allows him to better serve in a crucial aspect of running the empire, while also serving to solidify our connections to Equestrian and better exert our influence there. And when he inherits the throne, it will be a Emperor that the Equestrians would be very familiar with.
It honestly makes sense to have Gawain to be a diplomatic focused Monarch his Father built the current Empire. He'll have the far more dangerous task of keeping it together after his Father die's and the unfortunate fact is a lot of Empires Splinter after the original ruler/conqueror dies so it'll be important that Gawain is ready for that possibility.

Minamoto Tadakatsu: Shogun of Neighpon. Born to peasant farmers, he's more than earned his place as the most powerful Samurai amongst the Qilin. One of the first of the Crystal Ponies to be freed from Sombra's mind control, Rook has taken to his position of authority reluctantly, more out of a desire to help his people than any desire for power. Nevertheless, he's proven a charismatic leader and an able administrator, dedicated to doing right by his people, no matter what the cost.

Isabelle Brissette: Relatives of the infamous Brochard dynasty, Isabelle and the Brissette family have been ostracized by the Imperial Nobility, reduced to a shadow of their former influence and prosperity, though by some miracle they still cling to some of their lands. Isabelle herself is a painfully shy little thing, unused to having friends willing to look past her lineage. Gawain hopes to show her that her ancestry does not define her, and that she is more than her uncle's legacy.

Ki Seong: Daughter of the Neighponese ambassador to the Empire of Gryphus, Ki Seong has spent the past several years living in a nation far from the land of her birth, and, much like her father, is committed to being a shining example of Neighpon and conducting herself in an honorable manner at all times. That being said, Gawain suspects she enjoys the opportunity to "let her hair down" amongst others of similarly elevated status, where she will not have to worry as much about what others think of her.

Sebastian Rainfeather: A quiet and somewhat socially awkward young Gryph, Sebastian is an avowed scholar and the heir to the noble house of Rainfeather. Due to his somewhat sheltered upbringing, he, like Gawain, has struggled to make friends, something that Gawain seeks to remedy. For his part, the young Rainfeather is simply glad to have a chess partner his own age who can keep up with him.

Hoofbeard: A former slave turned Pirate Captain, now a respected and influential figure amongst the inhabitants of the island nation of Libertalia. He has agreed to help you and your people, seeing in you a chance to improve Libertalia and stick it to Maretonia's slaveholding class.

King Rutherford: The charismatic Yak responsible for the unification of the numerous Yak clans into a singular, unified Kingdom. From what you've heard, he is exactly what you'd expect a Yak King to be like.

Rose: A Changeling, member of a race of shapeshifting emotivores. Defected to you when your agents nearly stumbled upon the Hive of Queen Phalanx and the conspiracy at the heart of Canterbury and the Church of the Lady of the Lake.

I just realized something regarding pegasi cloud cities.

Either they must be built at least partially with a manner of material that would allow a non-pegasi to stand on a cloud, or they don't and suddenly they really fail at being fortresses against anyone.
After all, the invaders could/would just pop through any clouds otherwise! Can you think how it would be if the invader could just pop out of any wall, floor or ceiling? Even with the risk of going in blind through clouds to get deeper, the same would apply to some extent to the defenders, needing to check all directions at all times during a siege.

@Questor back to my questions: are pegasi flying cities built with such a material, or what known methods do they use to deal with non-pegasi flyers?
I wonder how cloud architecture reacts to Orichalcum. We obviously can't afford to make ammunition out of the stuff, but a properly armored knight might be able to Oh-yeah! right through a cloud wall like it wasn't even there.

I agree that it's a stupid option - I said as much in my own little decision between the two - but I highly doubt this would happen. If anything, I am fairly certain fighitng a war as a commoner would endear Gawain to his people. That is what has happened historically every time a royal has chosen to fight in a war without special command or the like. At most it sets a precedent for "chivalry" like the Kingdom of Vedina in Equestria at War where the heirs are expected to strike out on their own adventures and prove themselves on their own to the common people to succeed as heir. Overall it is absolutely a stupid and unnecessary risk, but I don't foresee it being negative towards our reputation. Quite the opposite in fact.

Let Gawain get his feet wet in the wilds first before being thrown into the deep bloody trenches that is war. Also, kind of disappointed there was no "I want to kill some x," "no, you don't son, killing is horrible," back and forth.

How is Equestia doing anyways? I think they had the Hearth Warming then the Pillars made the Tree of Harmony then Discord and now it's been 20 to 30 years right?

Wouldnt it be interesting, if the equestrian path was the most dangerous option of them all.

Gawain needs to be out of his father's shadow. He can't copy the things that the Emperor has done, and really he shouldn't try - while Garrick is impressive as all hell, if the son is a younger copy of the father then that's all he'll be received as. "Gawain the Diplomat" is much better than "Gawain the chip off the old block" even though the old block is legendary.

Plus, the other two options are "Daddy got you a safe posting" and "Do you even have a brain in your head" so...
