Are you saying that dwarves wouldn't try to reclaim a lost karak? because we've got a cushy job and a badass tower that says otherwise. Of course, this is not a short term concern, but the fact that the army of people one way or another we would be sending to their deaths only happens if the dwarves don't all die before they can get around to it does nothing to alleviate the guilt I would feel.
In the middle of chaos wastes with no clan from that Karak to push for the reclamation.
Yes, they are not going to try to claim that Karak, not unless they figure out a way to push back the wastes themselves, and any plan that relies on that is insane.

This is the best of the worst options, the risks are we try to gather information run into a shaman of the four and we get attacked, we then don't learn if we can use magic safely and have to risk spawning to escape. We wont be able to use our shadow steed to travel either if the objective is find out if it's safe first.

If he's not I am, this is in the chaos wastes. There will never be another expedition to the area again if we come back saying what we've seen for the same reason Karak Eight peaks wasn't taken by an army of a hundred thousand dwarves theres no expat clans to make the push and it's literally THOUSANDS of miles away.

Trying to kill the kurgans after accepting food from them is a dick move, and Ranald probably won't be happy if Mathilde just butchers them, especially when Mathilde is invoking the protector aspect of Ranald.

I'm pretty sure Ranald wouldn't mind us killing Chaos Worshippers at all.

That's exactly what Karag Dum is doing though.

Never ask a subordinate to do something, you won't do yourself.

If you want to meet Morghur, then do it yourself, by being willing to sacrifice a subordinate, it will taint the protector aspect.

Based on the fact we were actively channeling a major spell all the way to the desert and noticed no issue, I'm quite comfortable walking half a mile back and casting shadow steed to go meet them.

I suppose if we leave the crater and circle around it might be safe to do that.

Never ask a subordinate to do something, you won't do yourself.

If you want to meet Morghur, then do it yourself, by being willing to sacrifice a subordinate, it will taint the protector aspect.

Well if we're taking that logic I recall a Startrek NG episode which said that logic was wrong, sometimes you have to ask subordinats to do something you can't or wont do yourself. That's the burden of leadership.

Not leaving until we have enough material for a couple solid research papers.
Right now, we have enough for one.

Mathilde is understandably worried about trying it, but to me, that seems to have good odds of success.
I mean, did you notice the description of the forest? Not the beastmen lurking within to ambush unwary interlopers, the forest itself.
These are old forests. The type you don't go into lightly, because if there's not something terrible already living there, it's because the trees are the something terrible."
Sure, there are terrible things present, but why not both?
Mathilde puts her arm up against a tree, it might try to take it off for the blood.

Even if not, navigating several miles of old-growth forest is no trivial task for seasoned woodsmen, let alone a noob with a knowledge level of 'trees are big wooden things with leaves at the top'.

How big the area of Cor-Dum's area is btw? Because I had thought it'd be something measured in meters, but if we're wary even now when we can even see Cor-Dum...

No one would kill us if they knew about the shopping, it's not remotely comparable as risks go.
They would if they knew about the Liber Mortis. All taken together, that's a bad look.

- Owns the Liber Mortis, kept it a secret

- Anti-Dhar belt many unsavory individuals would kill for

- Traded large amounts of favor for the instructions to Gehenna's Golden Hounds (mildly sus)

- Stopped over in Uzkulak for a shopping trip

- Divine artifact from a God barely tolerated in polite society

If all that stuff (or the wrong combination) came out, it would be very difficult to construct a defence, and we'd be burning a lot of political capital to avoid literally burning. Might not even be possible given the whole Liber Mortis bit, which is very cut and dry as far as article violations go.

We're friends with a dragon that believes that most pantheons are just cultural interpretations of the same set of gods, and that the eight winds might also be gods (a belief shared by the kurgan), but was shocked to discover the dwarven gods didn't fit their pan-pantheon theory.

We also learned the Ancient Widow desires reconciliation between Ranald and the Kislev gods. Ranald was wary of this offer, but not, I think, dismissive, and we'll probably arrive back in Kislev just in time to witness a state visit from the Emperor and his wife.

Incidentally, there are several pieces of old information which may or may not be canon, that point to the Ancient Widow being a guise of Arianka - one of the Gods of law. Specifically the one who's supposed to be sealed in a crystal coffin beneath Praag.

we have 25 intrigue and advanced infiltration, we can hardly be considered a noob at sneaking around.

we should not be approaching any of the tribes, asking about the Karag's history and weakness, not if it will cause a misunderstanding with Karag Dum, if we want a parley we should do it the honest way, we have conducted almost all the safe experiments and concluded that Karag Dum has not fallen to chaos, so we will bank on the protector and the dwarven Gods and Ranald to make sure diplomacy with Morghur proceeds smoothy.

We did not sift through every bone in that desert.
If there were enough notable Chaos Spawn around they would have noted inhuman bones beyond what seems typical to Beastmen and Humans. This means that there should be a large number of irregular bones(not belonging to Humans, Beastmen, or in between) due to the frequency of the Tribes attacking with the Shadowgrave present, but we don't see that at all. Just what seems to be the regular feeding habits of the Beastmen occuring and the populations interacting here.

Given they couldn't be bothered to respond to us I really have no problem hurting their feelings or causing a "Misunderstanding" which in fact was completely caused by their side when you get down to it.

Forests. I am saying we know nothing of woodcraft.

I'm sure Panoramia would have loved to take us on some forest hikes, but that's not really an option around K8P. We didn't go with her when she went to go get Lotus blossoms in the Spider-infested goblin forest, as she as a Jade knew what she was doing.

You'd probably notice these skeletons.

I voted to infiltrate with magic, so yes, presumably the Lady Magister would be able to get through even scary trees thanks to being invisible, intangible and whatever else she has up her sleeves.

The way I see it, infiltrating with magic trivializes infiltrating the forest at the risk of a small potential chance of bad ending the game.

If Cor Dum appears, and catches her, and uses an ability he hasn't been using, and none of our various advantages offer us any protection from his power. Which, you know, could happen. But if Mathilde goes out in that scenario, it wouldn't be because of an eviller than average tree.

@BoneyM - I assume, that entrance to the Karak would be on far edge of the forest, rather than in a middle on it, correct? If so, would this be feasible/usefull?

[ ] Ask Deathfang to be carries on the mountain of Karak. Infiltrate from mountain.

It skips us dangers of passing through beatmen infested forest and gives good chance to avoid Morghur. After infiltration, Mathilde can signal expedition to be picked up.

The forest rings the mountain. Deathfang dropping Mathilde on the mountain just means she has to make her way through the forest from the top rather than the bottom, and puts the Beastmen on edge because dragon.

He does not have to appear, he vastly inflates the miscast potential in a great area around him.
