On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

I'd expect at a bare minimum it would help with the main rune metal chain.
That's potential thing as well. Between Soul of the Earth and Journeyman of the Odd, as well as Gromril Chain necessitating better understanding of the metal and skill with manipulating it there's probably going to be some progress in the primary line if we work on it. And vice versa.

Bruh if journeyman gave bonus actions into the other rune metal branch that would be amazing. It sounds like it's just odd materials it does that for but I am perfectly happy to toss gromril chain into that category and call it a day.

I wonder what would happen if we have Snerra Zharrgal to hold for a bit, in addition to her 4-piece combo so far? Because it feels like to me, that "Makerstrike" -- or something like Makerstrike -- is feeling like the missing/final 5th piece for her set combo...

Course, we'll have to see if Snerra is able to figure out the Makerstrike idea on her own, too. Though if she does... Heh.
-- Genius's Touch
-- Prodigal Mind
-- Visions of ???
-- ???
Interesting! So, interesting fact. When Snerra's items first showed up, they had Prodigal Touch.
Shining Standard:
- Prodigal Touch
- Visions of ???
Now, it's Prodigal Mind. And Genius Touch.

And some of Snorri's items too, have this. From traits that he got. Snorri used to have "Mind for Metal", before it evolved into "Soul of the Earth." And now, Snorri has "Mind for Constructs."

The Maiden gronti has this:
-- Soul of the Earth
-- Trollbane
-- Chaosbane
-- Mind for Constructs

Barak Azamar has this:
-Conduit of the Earth: ??? The Oldest Magics, nai the Oldest Forces on the planet fill the armour, pulled forth by the heart of something that could never be satiated. The eternal energy of the ageless living earth flows like water through a channel carved in the stone and into the wearer.

And Zharrgal got Touched by the Earth, due to its construction:
- Touched by the Earth: It drinks deeply and greedily from the power that Barak Azamar releases. When used in conjunction with the armour, the weapon's abilities are greatly empowered, where the tool strikes with such heat and ferocity that no Forge is needed to heat the metal and tempers the item exactly as the wielder wishes.

So, I think the implication is pretty clear here: there's a relation and/or a progression. Touch, Mind, Soul. Perhaps "body" or "master" in there somewhere. Perhaps "Ancestor" or "Ancestor God" comes after Soul, or even further.

This might be a bit incorrect though. As, we had already had Soul of the Earth trait before making Zharrgal IIRC, and yet Zharrgal ended up with Touched by the Earth rather than Soul of the Earth. 'course, that could be artistic interpretation and freedom at play here. Zharrgal getting Touched by the Earth rather than just a "Touch of Earth" thing, or... ... Anyway. Zharrgal gets its own thing, due to its close connection to Barak Azamar and Snorri.

(And it's interesting to see Snerra having visions being a thing, too. Like Snorri himself does.)
[Set Combo, Rhunkiklad: Gromril-like, Magic Breaker, Glittering Beacon, ???] All enemy magic is passively siphoned to empower the Banner or anvil, bonus to active dispel attempts by the bearer. The Energy can be transferred to the banner until its effect can envelop an entire army or to the anvil to further enhance its ability to improve Rune Casting. Under the Mountain's aegis are we guarded, with Valaya's skill the magic is disrupted, and through Thungni's gift is repurposed.
It sounds like it's missing Makerstrike. That's what it feels like.

I'll bet that an Anvil of Doom, is probably the final end result of researching, understanding, compressing, and mastering all 5 of those rune-combos and Master Runes. And understanding and compressing the 5-piece set combo too.

And then you need to figure out the right rune combo from the research you made, too.

This seems a bit off.

I think it's missing an Exceptional specialty -- that of Banner runes. (... Unless her Eceptional Specialty in Banner Runes got elevated to the Mastery Specialty of 'General Subset: Casting'?)

Here's what Snerra's write-up is in the character sheet:

Specialties: General Rune Subset: Casting (Mastered), Talismanic Rune Subset: Fortitude and Healing (Exceptional), Banner Runes (Exceptional), Armour Runes (Exceptional), Engineering Rune Subset: Gronti (Exceptional), Weapon Runes.

And here's what it was just before the update:

Specialties: Talismanic Runes (Exceptional), Banner Runes (Exceptional), Armour Runes (Exceptional), Weapon Runes, Engineering Runes.

So the addition was Engineering Runes being elevated to an Exceptional Specialty, and the gaining of a Mastery.

Also, here's the old table for comparison, back from Turn 25.
Snerra has returned, a Master Runesmith ready to learn the higher art of Runecraft after proving herself, at the same time your newest set of bumbling buffoons have figured out what they are marginally less horrible at. A joyous occasion.

It's named part 1 so that's a pretty good indication. Soul doesn't do that unless they're a chain.
It's named "part 1b", which labels it as associating with and branching off of "part 1" in my head. Since this is the only time we've seen a "1b", there is no established precedent to work from.
It would be astounding if it wasn't part of a sequence of research. The rewards promised are hefty, so to must the investment.
You seriously question, if GROMRIL CHAIN, something that only one Dwarf in the history of the Karaz Ankor is recorded to make, is going to take more than 8 actions to finish?

What.
Well yeah. It's an 8 action cost research. That's two whole decades of a Non-Snorri dwarf doing almost nothing but work on it. It's also essentially a breakthrough in working the material itself, which is mostly an engineering challenge, not the esoterica that runesmiths usually specialize in. Clearly, there's some secret to it, but I'd totally buy that it's doable within that timeframe. Especially with access to Adamant tools.

What I'm specifically thinking of is the ending sentence of Journeyman of the Odd.

Research gains from studying odd materials improved.

It is just speculation that it might help us tie things together.

Much more grounded, the primary and secondary lines of Rune Metal are tightly interwoven so both would probably proc progress in the other anyway.

It's the first part of the 'b' line of the Rune Metal tree.

It's not branching off of Rune Metal A part 1, we completed that almost eight months ago IRL, and Rune Metal B didn't show up as an option until after we'd completed Rune Metal A part 4 and got a chain from Grungni.

E: basically, "Rune Metal, Part 1 of Line B".

Two whole decades is nothing. Dwarves today live up to their 600s, on average. Runesmiths, especially Runelords can live longer than that. That is more than enough for someone to have pieced it together. Especially with the penchant for Runelords to hole themselves up in their workshops for centuries of !!RESEARCH!!

If @soulcake had intended it to be taken as a single item branch in the research tree he would have written it as The Rune Metal b. Or he might have just given it another title entirely. For it to be as you propose, it would require purposeful manipulation of the viewers, which soulcake would not do. Besides, in the impossible chance that this does unlock gromril chain, there is always adamant chain. :^)

It would also be rather horrid to do thematically. Like, it would be terribly unsatisfying to read. Oh. Snorri put a modicum of effort into it and did something no one else thought of. Yay. Where as it being a, chain, of research options makes the price worth the reward.

I'd like to make a proposal for the limbs, based on what we know.

Replace the Master Rune of Unyielding with the Master Rune of Waking.

We know that what it does is try to give life and animation and use to the item it's on.

What better does that sound like than an upgrade to her arm? Just making the arm more... arm-y.

I quite literally crashed and took a long ass nap after I dropped the update. Apologies.

I highly doubt this. @soulcake, if we learn how to make eyeball prosthetics a century from now, Orra is of course going to be first on the list to get one, right?
Yes,
@soulcake I'm sorry to make your life a little more difficult, but I'm hyped about helping her and so dove in immediately.
/shrug.
Hey @soulcake , what would be a valid upgrade to Griffon Brain for MR Currents?
Something that encapsulates what a Griffon brain does for the Rune but better. So big, flying, fast hyper predator brain probably. That or a particularly "Griffon-y" Griffon's brain.
Good lord no.
But it's worth asking. @soulcake, if we made an order for T4 Stonehorn Horns and used Kingly Expedite, would it be possible to get them end of turn 34?
It can be done.
think it's missing an Exceptional specialty -- that of Banner runes. (... Unless her Eceptional Specialty in Banner Runes got elevated to the Mastery Specialty of 'General Subset: Casting'?)
It upgraded to the the specialty you see now.

It upgraded to the the specialty you see now.
Ah. It was still listed as its own specialty in Snerra's updated character sheet.
Specialties: General Rune Subset: Casting (Mastered), Talismanic Rune Subset: Fortitude and Healing (Exceptional), Banner Runes (Exceptional), Armour Runes (Exceptional), Engineering Rune Subset: Gronti (Exceptional), Weapon Runes.
She had both Casting Mastery, and Banner Exceptional specialty.

@soulcake, Orra already has a child, right? With Buradarr? Because man, that just sucks - not even three centuries after their wedding and tragedy struck. Did the Global RER really rolled that bad?

Honestly, Snerra is so ridiculous that it kind of falls flat for me. She seems to simply be Rune!Jesus.

I'd like to see some more real crazy shit from Snorri, besides just mega super hammer-goes-boink time. I feel we do too much normal stuff, but really good, as opposed to esoteric Ancestor/Golden Age stuff.

I miss the Adamant research quest chain. At some point we theorized a runic communications network between Karaks, too? Stuff like that.

Let's see a golem that turns into lightning or something.
