Roswita did fire us for a bad reason,
Her reasoning honestly wasn't that bad.

Magic is in many ways a curse that literally twists your soul and just two updates ago we were one poor roll away from literally exploding. Yes, Mathilde was incredibly skilled and loyal to the Van Hals, but Roswita's alternative was a witch hunter who she knew personally and we have no reason to believe he wasn't our equal at the time. Roswita had the choice between an adviser loyal to her specifically and one that was a one bad afternoon away from turning into a hole in reality.

(I would also argue against counting "would've died without our intervention" against her considering what happened to the last Count of Stirland who Mathilde served...)

Her reasoning was only 'good' from that perspective if you assume Mathidde is also loyal and would not take the unceremonious and insulting dismissal to sabotage Roswita's rule. I mean we did steal from her a bit. but compared to the damage we could have done to the intelligence apparatus on our way out that is nothing. Hell, we could have hidden away the damn Runeblade of Stirland which would have ruined her legitimacy.

Runefang.

But yes. We could have done a lot of damage on our way out if we'd wanted to.

And if Mathilde was the type of person would've harmed Roswita out of spite, that's also a good reason not to have her on the council. And would've invalidated Abel's evaluation of her, which is the only reason why Roswita would've wanted to retain Mathilde in the first place.

Besides, I am pretty sure the witch hunters felt confident that they could catch a journeywoman Grey Wizard if it proved neccesary. While I doubt they actually could've pulled it off, doing so is literally their job description.

She did fire us because of bigotry.

Just the once though, and I think we've settled that score satisfactorily.

It having come to the attention of the Emperor that there are vampires in Sylvania...

No we need Dwarf Romance Extensive and Esoteric.

I would question how much we need that particular academic material for the problem being discussed.

Or and here's and idea she could have dismissed us without being insulting. It is possible that Mathilde could have been the sort of person to lash out from spite at the insult and not the dismissal itself. Roswita gained nothing from the way she chose to treat the shift in responsibilities away from Mathilde and she could have lost much, thus it was irrational, which only makes sense given her neurosis.

We are so incredibly close to not going to the Chaos Dwarves, c'mon guys you can do it.
We're so incredibly close to not going to the Skaven, cmon guys you can do it 😁
We are so incredibly close to going to both, c'mon guys you can do it...

Roswita probably didn't see it as insulting. She literally said that Mathilde by all accounts didn't deserve to be cursed and that she would do what she could to ensure the journeywoman would get employment elsewhere.

It is precisely the sort of statement I would expect SV to come up with if they were in Roswita's shoes.

She called us cursed, implied our power and a significant part of our identity was wrong and evil. I too expect that is the sort of reaction that would come out of a quest protagonist... if they rolled a crit fail for a social check. Whether or not Roswita believed it to be true it was foolish to say so.

From her point of view nobody WANTS to be a wizard though, unless they were insane.

Its not a good thing, but she genuinely believed what she said

I sure hope SV would be more diplomatic than that. Mathilde was a noblewoman albeit a low ranking one and a would be magister (because I can't imagine SV not considering that someone with her accomplishments wouldn't get promoted to magister).

Gratuitously insulting a rising star and implicitly every single wizard out there as cursed - instead of a more polite: 'Thanks for your service but I've got my own dude' is straight diplo crit fail territory. Culturally understandable sure but still crit fail territory because the Colleges as institutions can decide to favour nobles who aren't openly hostile to wizards with higher priority and lower rates and whilst more established Elector Counts have the clout and money to bypass that or compensate Roswita didn't.

Eh, I think all things considered it would be a regulr fail, not a crit fail, considering setting attitudes, but agreed, mostly.

Random thought before I go to sleep, and I'm sure this has been asked but can someone remind me... are dragons capable of High Magic? Maybe that's why the Ulthuani dragons look down on those who tie themselves to a Wind?

I'd argue that losing the uber-spymaster hero is regular fail; potentially alienating the Colleges who are one of the most influential institutions in the Empire is crit fail.

Yeah, I suspect Roswita didn't want to have anything to do with wizards, but with Sylvania's necromancers and vampires being right over there loudly lamenting how cursed the friendly wizards are was not politically astute.

The only canonical beings able to use high magic are the slann and the high elves, with wood elves getting the lore in the later editions.
