Despite my feeling that increasing the research queue would be a good thing, I don't feel like going looking for shinies right now.

We might as well not do it now, when we've no actual plans or intent to do anything about the place.

I plan to gather intelligence about the place and give the write up to the Grey College. That's doing something about the place.

I also plan to buy any interesting things we find from exotic sources and possible steal anything we don't want people to know we bought, on the grounds that there may be some things there we really don't want to end up in the hands of the local or international bad guys, and there may be some other really useful stuff.

We weren't planning to save Karak Vlag at the time when the option to visit it was listed. It's a perfectly comparable choice. We literally don't know what we can or can't do with the Chaos dwarves port city with out visiting it.
We know the port city is full of chaos dwarves, we had no reason to assume there was anything at Karag Vlag (up to and including Karag Vlag).
I do not trust the thread to not start, or get into, trouble if given half a chance.

We can just... not tell the Chaos Dwarves about the expedition...

And the Expedition was willing to buy supplies from Chaos Marauders without batting an eye or doing anything to our dwarf reputation. It's hard to grumble about you visiting people who officially don't exist.
I mean yeah, obviously if we go there we aren't going to tell them about the expedition.

However they'd have to be willfully blind not realize something is going on. Maybe they didn't notice High Pass is unusually clear this time of year but a place like Uzkulak probably has enough magic folk wandering around that they probably noticed the ruckus in the aethyr. A few days after that, an Imperial Wizard decked out in dwarf runes and wearing a Witch Hunter's cap walks in and buys a ton of cattle/meat? They might see a lot of traffic but that's just unusual enough to remember. I'll eat my hat if the knowledge concerning the comings and goings of people and their purchases is not on sale and whatever protection Uzkulak provides ends the second we leave.

What an update to wake up to!
you allow him to exhaust his grumbling before you excuse yourself and move on.
DWARF INFECTION INTENSIFIES
If the Wizards tell you to do something, do it, even if it's weird.
:rofl2:
You smile. "They sent three people and they still act smug about it."

Silence answers that. "I think it might be real," someone finally says.
:rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

Some typos I caught:
you'd attempted and failed you claim for yourself
you claim -> to claim
it's probably a good thing that their first taste for battle made her eager for more
I think "their" should be "her"? There isn't a logical antecedent for "they" here.
Once the Expedition has finished lickings its wounds
lickings -> licking

Anyway, we did a sidequest and I have no desire to do more sidequests this turn. I want to finish making the rounds of the leadership and the people we command.

Dropped my vote for the CBT gang and added one for Borek for strategic voting reasons.

And why did we suddenly forget all out illusion magic? Are we a Grey Wizard or not?

It depends on the kind of trouble. If it's the right kind, it may act as a good distraction for the way back.

Look at our spell list. We can very easily look like, say, the Norscan shaman that the Kurgan thought we were.

There are three other possibly four other slots for talking to people, there's no reason not to do this unless you think the other social slots are so utterly critical we can't do with out it, personally I have extreme doubts as to that. We have enough social slots even if both 'side' quest slots get picked to have talked to every major expedition person. As for what we intend to do there it's dependant on what we find but I'm absolutely willing to spend gold on books.
I don't want to go there until and unless we've committed to burning the place to the ground, and are either scouting for that or actually doing that. It being an 'open' slot doesn't matter to me.

Honestly, that's the best argument against going. Yeah, Karak Vlag was a victory, yeah, it should not be regretted, but another triumpth like that will make the expedition to auto-fail, especially since we also have to get the za goblet.

Mathilde should be going alone to trade and gather intelligence. She doesn't need to do anything there apart from going shopping and a bit of mild snooping.

What do you think this will cost the Expedition?

Changing the vote to keep the combes out of the top 5.

At least with the chaos dwarf city we can do stuff just with gold.

The Combes will just be getting into trouble if anything at all.

Why should we make any commitments prior to actually knowing what we'll find there?

Mathilde is very good at flexibly responding to the situation she finds herself in, not in locking herself into a rigid plan she refuses to deviate from. This is another opportunity to put her in the right place at the right time. Not a certainty, so if the opportunity doesn't exist we just walk her back out again, but giving her the opportunity to learn or acquire something that makes a difference down the line.

If we do end up taking more kinetic action, that will be because we've learned something that required us to, which we'd regret if we didn't go and whatever we were intervening to prevent happened without us being able to.
What did anyone think Vlag would?

I'm pretty sure that people were aware it could kick off into a fight, much more than this shopping trip could.

You say that, when a significant number of posters are like, "I want to go there to fuck it up and steal shit." That spells trouble and danger for the expedition.

Let's not become the WHF version of Pyrrhus.
