The entire reason this expedition is happening is because of our relationship with Hanyi and Zeqing. I'd rather go for the option that has us explicitly introduce the former.

If someone is actually 'on the job' and their direct supervisor is there (who is also a respected relative) it's an asshole move to try and get them to break their public-facing persona.

Have none of y'all worked retail? Let the poor girl follow the script.

Finding out how our military adjutant reacts when first meeting with a group of people who do not conform to imperial standards of formality is essential to mission planning. So is getting her used to talking with Hanyi, who is going to be a big part of the diplomatic effort. These are the diplomatic mission parameters, and if they are going to cause a conflict, it will be best to find out and work on that from the outset rather than having her and Hanyi get into an argument while we're half way to barbarian country.

Yes, going informal will probably be off-putting for Xia Lin, but the worse case scenario there is that she is dismayed at our lack of manners and decides that she is more comfortable working with the considerably more formal Cai Renxiang. That is hardly a disaster, I think.

We are in the odd position where being friendly is... the least friendly option. People are voting formal to be friendly and make her comfy.

Ironic much?

I don't know if what I want is formal or not. I would like us to be polite, welcoming and make her feel we are happy to have her working with us. I want to make a good impression and that we are someone she can trust and respect so we can build a useful working relationship. I'm not sure if being formal would acheive that. I'm also not sure how formal she will be if we ask for that. I'm guessing less than 'first day at court' behavior, but more than being in private with CRX maybe? Not really sure where that falls on this scale. I guess maybe this vote is about how imperial we act? As in, if we are being imperial standard we wouldn't show the spirits and might spar, but if we are being more traditional weilu we would show off our spirits more?

Oh, yes, the vote. I want to be nice and friendly, so....
