I, too, fully support dragon romance. Panoramia is nice, I suppose, but doesn't really grab my attention like Cython does.

(Besides, I now have this completely irrational desire to have Mathilde one day cast off her weak human form and somehow become a mighty Ulgu-Dragon, don't judge me.)

I want to put eggs in Cython.

But to do that we must cast aside the rigidity of flesh!

I think the Light's Demand item probably will only work on literal deamons, just like Algard's item only worked on those that were literally possessed when it hit them. Making it substantially less useful. I'd rather just invest more favor upfront for something useful long term with substantial breadth, rather than a mediocre interim solution that then gets dumped soon after.

she's flaring Ghyran like a signal flare as she draws power from the mountain Waystones. You wait until she's finished the intricate magical ritual she's performing on the freshly-sown field
Panoramia seems to have training in Ritual Magic (as well as Tapping Waystones).
if she would like to share some private unchaperoned time with romantic intent with you.
Smooth phrasing, Casanova. :V MAGDA WESSEN would've been a little more forthright.
"Was he a good Master?"

"Yes," you say automatically, then consider it. "Yes. Often busy, but... well, when my magic first manifested, he was working nearby. When he collected me, I kind of clung onto him. By the time he had wrapped things up and brought me to Altdorf, I'd decided I was going to go into the Grey College and he'd teach me and I'd be able to do all the wonderful things he could do. And once I'd finished my Junior Apprenticeship, he took me on." You smile. "I suppose life would have went very differently for me if a Wizard from a different College had been closer."

"Sounds like it must have been nice," Panoramia says, kicking off her now-unlaced shoes and stretching her legs, which you take the opportunity to admire. "I had a Master - still do, I suppose - but it was always Ma that taught me. She didn't want to be the one that broke the link, mother teaching daughter since the dawn of time.
Enjoyed the filling-in of both their apprenticeships. Little 10-year-old Mathilde determined to become Just Like Her Hero Rescuer Regimand.

Also, incidental callback confirmation that it's her Ma we need to bop on the nose for being dangerously soft-hearted in their training regimen-
You had to channel a bit of your Master- of your former Master for that, but if you ever met whoever taught Panoramia you won't need anyone's example to be properly scolding. Anyone that reaches Journeyman without being absolutely terrified of the consequences of mishandled magic hasn't been taught properly.
Anything to add a bit of frisson to the Meet The Parents social. :)

"Only time it's ever peaceful is just after a Waaagh goes through," Melkoth says. "And even then, not for long. Nobody wants to be the last one to emerge from the Vaults and find that all the relatively good land has already been reclaimed."
My only disappointment with this update is that Melkoth only got two lines. I was hoping for more but I suppose this is what happens when you have two guests in the same update, they compete for screentime and you have to choose between one not getting enough focus or two not getting enough focus.

What little you remember of how such matters are gone about in rural Stirland is of little use, as you doubt Panoramia would recognize the significance of a carved wooden spoon.
Oooh, a lovespoon! Totally didn't have to look that up. I can see why Mathilde might think Panoramia wouldn't recognize it, but it's possible her College have a similar tradition, albeit with grown things instead of carved.
The look she gives you is long and thoughtful, and by the quiver of her lips it's clear she's fighting back a smile or even a laugh, but she eventually says yes so you're able to tell her your idea for the details and flee as soon as she accepts that too. Her acceptance means you only spend most of the rest of the day hiding in the privacy of your dragon chair as you wait for your nervousness and embarrassment to abate. It's so much easier in the books.
I love this, some of that early quest Mathilde awkwardness shining through.

"Prescriptivists," Panoramia says with a snort.

"Assume a spherical calendar in a magical vacuum..."

Panoramia laughs. It's a nice sound.
I laughed too, but unfortunately my laugh isn't as nice sounding as I imagine Panoramia's to be.

Nice, some insights into Mathilde's early life post near-burning. Is there a good reference for the early days of a College wizard? That mention of Junior Apprenticeship is intriguing and I would like to know more.

It seems Mathilde's guess that Pan's mother had something to do with her education were somewhat true. I'm guessing this might have something to do with Pan's dislike of the druid traditions in her College? I can't imagine having functionally two Masters would have made a fun apprenticeship.

Even though the shift underneath doesn't reveal much more than her robes did, they were still her underthings.
And now I'm reminded of that time Mathilde got locked in a room with Abel in nothing but her underthings. Another reason for me to enjoy this date.
As you skim through the rest of the paperwork from the EIC, the results are plain to see: even though banditry has expanded significantly over the past few months, the EIC's losses have remained steady where everyone else's have increased significantly. It's not just the Aver that's been targetted, as word from elsewhere in the Empire is that the Stir and the Upper Reik are also seeing upticks in hostile activity.
Given the mention of presenting a united front, I wonder if an EIC option to reach out to other Imperial trade companies to coordinate defence might be viable? While having the EIC come out better than everyone else might be nice, it would be better if all the other companies didn't suffer overly much as well. Might also transfer the idea of putting the good of the Empire over profit to other companies, or make working with them easier once the crisis has passed.

You do, however, have the pleasure of reading that attempts at banditry on the Moot's portion of the Aver had a swift and brutal response, including a written apology to the town of Scheibbs for the Halflings not being able to fish all the corpses out of the river before they bobbed downstream.
Esmeralda bless the halflings, they're just so good. Disputes over land aside, they're definitely one of the Empire's better assets/friends.
Refugees are streaming out of the cordon, all claiming to be opposed to Vampiric rule but more likely unhappy with being on the losing side, and they're currently being resettled in Drakenhof.
It probably goes without saying, but I hope these refugees are being screened thoroughly. Don't want bad eggs escaping the trap.

I'll be skipping the vote, don't really care for the results either way.

Enjoyed the filling-in of both their apprenticeships. Little 10-year-old Mathilde determined to become Just Like Her Hero Rescuer Regimand.

I wonder if Regimand knows this. And I wonder if he thinks Mathilde is still trying for that goal.

Because Mathilde is either doing very badly at emulating him, or doing THE BEST at mimicking him.

...

And now I'm thinking about Regimand's possible greatest feat: Erasing all evidence of his grand, wacky, and world-shaking adventures.

Junior Apprenticeship is developing control over the ability to touch the Winds. For some people this means learning how to reach out and touch it, for others it's learning how to stop. They usually get a Master when they reach regular Apprentice, that's when they start learning how to actually do things with magic instead of learning how not to be killed by magic. Senior Apprentices have enough control that they can be allowed out of the mono-wind environment of the Colleges. Some of them join their Master on their missions, some of them go adventuring on their own, most just use it to explore Altdorf.

It probably goes without saying, but I hope these refugees are being screened thoroughly. Don't want bad eggs escaping the trap.

They'll be making sure they're not actually Vampires, but there's not really a way to identify the innocent from the sympathisers from the complicit.

The Bigger Slice of the Pie
The Bigger Slice of Pie

It was a few days after their afternoon at the lake, and the glow had worn off just enough for Mathilde to begin to worry again. After all, it had been such fun in the moment, letting go of some of her taboos both swimming and modesty related, but now, given time to properly think, she may have been too forward. ...but then, wasn't Panoramia the one persuading her then? No! She shook her head firmly in the darkness of her chair, the curtain across the eyeholes drawn shut and the jaw firmly closed. She had asked Panoramia on the date, she was the one who... She couldn't blame Panoramia for misreading her intentions as it seemed that the traditions she was raised in we different and her eyes had sparkled just like the sun off the water.

Wolf, picking up her mood, swung between restless pacing and exasperated huffing standing with is paws on the teeth of the dragon skull.

There was a knock on the door. Wolf, having nothing better to do, opened it to reveal a halfling messenger runner, staring up somewhat apprehensively at the canine looming over him. The halfling gulped. It was one thing to play football against such a beast, quite another to come upon it at the gateway to it's master's sanctuary. More quickly than he would have wished, he stuttered out his message.

"Th-the jade journeywoman would like to ex-extend her best wishes and invite the esteemed magister to an evening of pie and humble dancing?"

Wolf tilted his head. A moment later there was a clatter deeper in, as Mathilde startled and fumbled and opened her chair. Quickly, she rushed to the front door, approaching from the side where the messenger would not see her haste, and pressing him to repeat his message gave a reply in the affirmative before closing the door and sinking down against it.

"Wolf, what am supposed to think about this?" Mathilde fretted, "She emphasized our ranks and the difference in them in my favor but she also asks me to a date this time? Is she... I wonder, is this like Under Branches of Oak and Ivy? Where the dashing young traveler begins to court the elven maiden? He was bold in the asking and they both knew it... mmmhmmmhm, I hope tonight is like that feast." She smiled briefly, somewhat dreamily, then suddenly frowned.

"I know there's nothing wrong with robes, but I wonder..."

Panoramia was delighted. On the inside. On the inside, Panoramia was screaming; the far too cool and pretty for her own good soon to be Lady Magister accepted her invitation to a date after ASKING HER ON THE FIRST DATE! (Internal Panoramia had to swoon here, briefly. That had been a fantasy for a very, very long time. Sometimes innocent and idealized, sometimes earthy and almost shameful, but she had been interested since before she had even met the woman in person- though after so long of knowing her, her hopes of it actually happening had almost disappeared.)

On the outside, Panoramia was merely smiling as Mathilde materialized at the edge of the firelight, her hat higher and further back than normal, and her collar open. She smiled, and it was hesitant, and nervous, and utterly unfair. With her hat tilted as it was her face seemed more open, and with her collarbones exposed Panoramia was suddenly conscious of how small the magister really was. (She was small enough that she could stand close to her bend down and tilt up her chin with her hand and-! FOCUS!)

"Welcome! Thanks for coming, I know that the halflings do this pretty regularly but I still thought it might be a treat, since I hadn't seen you here for them very much at all?"

Mathilde's smile became easier, a touch more confident. "I haven't, there's always so much to do and even with a shadowhorse it isn't quick to run down the mountain. I'm grateful for your invitation, and your forbearance- I remember what happened last time you and I had an evening with pies."

Panoramia laughed delightedly. "You set fire to them because you couldn't wait, stole away my chef before any were properly done, and followed up by throwing the most raucous party the Karak had seen in a hundred years?"

"It was the first party worth mentioning in far more than a hundred years in this place," Mathilde retorted, then with a wink, "And I did say I was grateful for the second chance. I can't promise that things will stay in hand though, halfling pie can be inspirational, or so I hear."

"Indeed." Panoramia replied with throaty tone that stole Mathilde's smirk and replaced it with a blush, at least until she realized she was being teased. "I believe the lingdenberry and meringue is the rumored favorite to win the grand prize this evening, although with a new palate in the mix perhaps a dark horse will claim victory?"

Smiling again, a touch ruefully, Mathilde caught up Panoramia's hand and pulled her in towards the crowd of small folk that were gathering about the rough tables.

"Introduce me? These are more your folk than mine, even as long as I've fought with their field wardens, and tonight I'm not the Dame Thane Loremaster Magister- tonight, I'm just Mathilde, and I would love some pie."

Behold, page fifty five.
Altdorf is just as you remember it - overcrowded and full of snobs. You're also struck by how... ignored you are. In Stirland, you get looks everywhere you go, albeit mostly nervously respectful ones lately. But Altdorf is practically bursting with wizards, and though you aren't exactly getting jostled by passers-by, neither are you given any undue attention.

You're not sure how you feel about it.

The morning after you arrive, you're enjoying a quiet drink in the tavern you've rented a room in when your Master walks in, exactly as you remember him - same robe, same hat, same hideous fox stole he insists on constantly wearing dangling from his neck. He heads straight for your table and sits himself down uninvited, not even glancing away from you as the bartender hurries over with a tankard of ale.

"You could have waited until I sent word," you say with feigned exasperation.

"What's the point in knowing everything if you can't show it off?" he replies, his deep, booming voice ringing around the tavern.
"What's the point in knowing everything if you can't show it off?"

Oh, I see. That makes sense. I hate to ask, but is there like, an age range for these, even if it's just one that uses Mathilde as basis?

[ ] [COLLEGE] Item duplicating Light's Demand: (Holds in place all Chaos creatures caught in a cone of light for several rounds. This spell is particularly hard to resist.) - 5 favor

Is this going to permanently occupy our enchanted item slot? Probably not. Will it be extremely useful in the Chaos Waste in particular? Hella yes! Get it for the upcoming mission, use it, and replace it with some item we enchant for ourselves using WIndherder down the road when we have the AP to do so. Light's Demand has a number of attractive features:

1. Affects only Chaos creatures, so very friendly to allies.
2. Specifically hard to resist.
3. Cone, so easy to aim even as an enchanted item.

You can talk about the merits of a big boom all you want, but in the Chaos Wastes specifically, on the mission we're doing specifically, a Light's Demand that freezes one daemon in place for a precious few seconds could be way more valuable than a huge explosion.

EDIT: "Daemonbane: Attempts to banish all daemons in a large area back to the Realm of Chaos", is also a viable alternative if you're more worried specifically about daemons, though then we can't use it on non-daemon chaos creatures.
Oooh, I like that.
