To be clear there would be general unrest because of everyone walking away unsatisfied with the loss of potential royal favor.
There was never royal favor to be gained. One way or another, they're getting a ruler appointed for them, whether it happens to be a lord or a governor.

They're trying to bargain with a tool they don't actually have.

Hmmmm... so they generally aren't seeing cooperation as possible?

I did think that maybe having a local strongman would help in this situation since everyone is just too distrustful as a rule to work together.

@DragonParadox Do we know anyone in Westeros who has both the ability to lend us an extra heir, preferably one who is actually capable of utilizing the administrative personnel and resources (and presumably some military assets to have a stick to wave around) who's competent and loyal?

Top 5 Suggestions would be nice.

Bronn wanted a castle somewhere didn't he? He's relatively competent and the place is small enough that it can't get up to too much trouble.

They do in that they are the only local power structure. Imposing a new one will take time and effort on your part.

In theory they see cooperation as posibile, as part of a prince's court. They are more feudal than most places you captured so far. The idea of voting as part of the power structure is rather alien to them.

As for top five suggestions it's a little late for me but of everyone mentioned so far Black Walder would probably be the most competent.

Bronn is explicitly uneducated. We can give him a nice castle and a plot of land somewhere, but it'd be his wife or underlings that do the ruling for him. As such we shouldn't be giving him anything of too much importance, because he's definitely not going to run the show.

Black Walder's not a bad option at all.

[X] Approach someone to be the Lord of Omber
-[X]
Black Walder Frey
-[X] Give him 10,000 IM as a seed fund (the same amount Vargo Alexi of Sallosh was given), along with a Valyrian Steel blade to commemorate his lordship, and aid in building himself a sturdy castle
-[X] Grant him a Calligraphy Wyrm assistant
-[X] Make sure he has basic gear (PfE, Healing Belt, etc)
-[X] Make an offer of a single Heart Tree of his choice
-[X] Have a talk with Black Walder on the challenges he'll face as a new lord, of the machinations of his new vassals, of the ways he can improve his lands through trade and immigration and enhanced infrastructure, and lastly of the threats he'll need to watch out for (mainly Deep Ones since he's in the Shivering Sea)
--[X] Suggest that Black Walder offer sanctuary to other members of his family who wish to leave the Twins as a way to gain loyal subordinates (though the ones in Sorcerer's Deep can join him after a proper education)

@Duesal I would also make some modest suggestions to Walder to 'quietly encourage' some of his family who chafe under Old Walder's steady hand to consider heading eastward to help him pick up the load once the Reconquest is over, and more implicitly a refuge, both there and in Sorcerer's Deep for anyone who is too afraid to say no to the old weasel but could definitely make a life for themselves elsewhere. Specifically, there is probably at least a dozen Frey ladies and boys who are intelligent enough to start getting educated in Sorcerer's Deep, and might prefer a high office working with Walder in the future to being insulted all day every day by their patriarch.

Do ya'll think Rhango would be willing to wear Mithral fullplate?

Added, though with the caveat that the ones in Sorcerer's Deep stay put until they get an education, after which they can choose if they'd like to join him.

Unfortunately no. This is something I tried before, and DP said a breastplate is the most he's willing to wear.

Could he get one of those Animated Shields, though?
