Great, what happens when they pull a Teleporting BS on us and we are to far away to address it. They are pirates so they must have the typical raid and fade attacks planed out.
It's very rare for there to be less than a few Companions in SD at any given time, but they're hardly the main defense of the city any longer.

There are four separate Steam Cannon Batteries protecting SD, dozens of Glass Golems, dozens of Herald Constructs, dozens of Elemental Wyrmling Constructs, dozens of Wyverns, various Outsiders (Erinyes mostly but several others as well), hundreds of all sorts of powerful servitors (including quite a few CR 15 creatures like Fiery Dragonbeasts and Grand Dragon Turtles), hundreds of combat capable Scholarium mages (many of whom can cast 3rd level spells), nearly 100 Minotaurs Fighters/Occult Slayers, thousands of combat capable Tritons living in the waters around SD's port (including Breath Taker), at least a few hundred of our aerial Darkenbeast riders, hundreds if not thousands of Legions soldiers and Inquisition agents, along with unique defenders like the Harbinger, Nirah, Teana, the Zomok defender of the Dawn Tree, Best Coatl, and so on.

We also have the Magitech Radar which can instantly detect ships miles before they are even in sight of SD.

Basically, it would be stupid for someone to try to raid SD. There are much softer targets in the Imperium, ones which won't obliterate your forces before you can even make landfall.

I agree it would be suicidal to attack SD, I am worried that they will Raid and Fade our less defensible cities which still have a good amount of loot in them, like Volantis or Lys.

We're doing what we can to build up our defenses. There's only so much we can do within a reasonable span of time, though.

And I get that, I am just curious on what plans we have as a just incase precaution so we don't get caught with our pants down and our cites looted. I'd rather we loot the pirate ships attacking us instead.

Relentless retribution? Anyone capable of raiding one of our cities should be more than capable of divining the potential outcome. Whether or not Viserys and the Companions are Mind Blank'd, someone would still be able to learn information by asking "what will happen if I do X?".

Looting a city isn't easy or quick, even if your surprise raid is successful. A raid simply intended to destroy shit could be more effective, but that's a far cry from sticking around long enough to grab enough loot to justify the expense of the operation.

We can't plan for everything.

Good to know, and thank you for answering my question it is extremely helpful.

  • [X] Honesty and attention. You shouldn't sire more heirs than you have the ability to cement loyalty and instill a sense of duty toward, nor should you lie because the truth is uncomfortable, as in this age the most tenuous falsehood will be unraveled in no time.
-[X] In all honesty, if he has more children than he can focus on at any one time, he should probably ensure those they do become loyal toward are already his allies and arrange fosterings which are advantageous. But you won't make secret your opinion of shoving a child into another family's arms just because they have become inconvenient. You doubt Relath will ever come to love his children as you would yours, but they deserve recognition from their parents.
[X] Attention, try to bonds with all his children as much as posibile, there will be conflicting loyalties of all sorts pulling at them, best to cement the one to Relath early

Part MMMDLVII: A Thirst For Learning
A Thirst For Learning

Twenty Ninth Day of the First Month 294 AC

If there is one thing you had not expected to discuss today it is parenthood, being neither a father yourself nor particularly interested in becoming one in the near future, but needs must. There is the seed of trouble here and one that goes deeper than corruption and wasted coin. "You should tell the truth and naught but that for in this age a lie, however well crafted, is too easily unraveled. I would say spend more time with your son in the absence of his mother, but it goes deeper than that. You should spend more time with all your children, secure a sense of loyalty and duty."

The sea-dragon nods, his blue-green scales casting a crown of light about his head in the magelight of the chamber. "I can see the logic of it, but there are quite many of them and most of the times not particularly interesting company. I would call them slow, but in truth they are half-mortal. It would be foolish of me to blame them for the aspect of their nature I decided for them." He pauses for a moment thoughtfully, though not to what you might prefer. "Tell me, do you know someone knowlegeble in djinn courtship? Perhaps I have been going about this the wrong way. If I provide them a leader who is more capable...."

You bite back a sigh, it's not that Relath is lacking in wit or wisdom, he simply does not understand the deeper motivations of those who make up the vast majority of his subjects, mostly because he does not care to. "A younger sibling brighter in magic might be resented and plotted against. If you have more children than you can handle..." you make no attempt to hide your disapproval of that fact. "Hand them off to families loyal to you with which to forge bonds."

"Fostering like they practice in the Sunset Lands?" Relath tilts his head in askance. "I had thought to simply hand them over to the Scholarum once they showed control of the magic in their blood, but that seems a fair notion." He chuckles again. "If I did not know better I would suspect you of ulterior motives, cousin. The House of Mirrors is about to gain quite a bit of silver from me."

So much for your disapproval making any impact on him, you shake your head as the Lord of Tolos takes human shape again to more comfortably fit in the corridor beyond your solar. Still, as foibles go it is far lesser to those of many magisters not one thousandth as useful as him.

News from the south is thankfully lacking in surprises. The efforts to improve life in the Basilisk Isles have taken to an almost frantic pace with everything from marks to engineers to skilled craftsmen taking the southern road in ever greater numbers. You would call Saan's reaction giddy if the man were not likely to take offense at it. Still, for all he waxed poetical about the wonders of culture and ease upon warm southern waters he has not neglected keeping his ships in good shape and drilling his soldiers. He knows full well what sort of terrors the jungles of the mainland holds, far beyond the painted lizards.

Meanwhile in Naath the efforts to increase the quality of schooling have gone remarkably well. Locals and new immigrants alike understand that knowledge can be power or wealth and opportunity, not least because of Wyla's influence, and so much to your surprise there is a proposal before you. One for an institution of Higher Learning in Naath, nothing to the size of the Academy in Sorcerer's Deep, but still an interesting notion, a University of Botanical and Zoological Studies that would work in close partnership with the Scholarum, perhaps even the Flesh Forge of Gogossos, to understand the strange creatures of Sothoryos, spreading knowledge of life studies that could be useful in a myriad of fields from the tending of crops and livestock to medicine and healing.

Establish Orphanages in Naath (9/1) -> Complete -> Critical Success -> Proposal for Partnership with the Imperial Government to create an university.
x2 Improve Infrastructure in Basilisk Isles (42/95)

On the one hand the enthusiasm translates into actual money, partly from Wyla but also from other interested parties to help found the university, on the other hand Naath is still out of the way and has a limited migration draw due to the peril of their native butterflies.

Do you go ahead with the University of Botanical and Zoological Studies in Naath?

[] Yes (One Provincial Action locked 30 Progress; Cost to the treasury 10,000 IM; other half of the costs paid for from local sources +1d6 extra progress added per month automatically)

[] No, Naath is too isolated for the investment

OOC: Only two provincial actions marked Other, a few odds and ends from minor characters and the tax code to go before we are done with the month.

Interesting.

Maybe we could make a ranger bard college?

Still learning about the environment is usually helpful.

A university of zoological and botanical studies would be an amazing boon to the
Naath, it would have no end for new specimens as well.

Naath can grow in population by about 2 (2,000) every month. In a year that could mean it'll hit a population of 30,000, which isn't huge, but it's enough to justify a university given its narrow focus.

Establish Higher Learning Institution
Every institution of this type has a focus, such as magic, natural science, law or economics and provides 1 Research action per turn that can be only used for matching topics. Alternatively, it can provide an additional 2d6 of progress to any action that matches it's specialization. A province can have an arbitrary number of these institutions, but each must have a different focus.
Requirements: At least 25 Population and at least 5 Administration and Law
Action: Government
Progress Needed: 20
Cost: 20,000 IM, 100,000 IM (Construction)
Upkeep: 2,000 IM

It would also add another research action.

It will greatly help our Sciences in the long run.

This is just the kind of place we'll need in order to train future generations of scholars and adventurers who will venture forth into the deep interior of the Green Hell, where dinosaurs are among the least dangerous inhabitants.

Just to move on, it's not exactly exciting or anything
