Poisonous Secrets
Eight Day of the First Month 294 AC
Tyene had expected the devil to try to flee the bright chains she wove, she had after all seen stranger things than giant four-headed worm things somehow managing to dodge a spell within the confines of a cage of sharpened steel. What she had not expected was for the fiend to start expanding like a some obscene bladder filled with oil its four heads letting out a horrid keening laugh. She almost expected it to burst like a pustule, spraying its guts all over the room, but where the devil's flesh touched the cage steel scraped and bent.
While she was still trying to think of what she could do to the damned thing that wasn't burning it with fire and light until it was a grease smear on stone Malarys and Teana cast as one, unravelings of shadow and unwavering law striking the same place in the devil's distending form. Some kind of implanted contingency then, meant either to help the devil escape or kill it before it can be forced to share its lord's secrets.
"We can't doing this for long!" Malarys points calls. "Lord Elaenos, the cage, Lady Mereth..."
Mereth did not need telling what to do. As soon as the archon had lifted the cage off the ballooning devil she drove her dragon-steel sword into its flesh and started sawing and carving as the belier's screamed gained a more urgent timber. Neither did the fury stop when black lightning crawled up her arm and lashed at her heart, merely gritting her teeth through the pain. As Tyene healed her she even managed to offer thanks in a perfectly level voice.
Blood-quenched steel scraped against metal... and the sputtering magic stopped.
"You know, serving Hell doesn't look like such a good deal from where I'm standing," Tyene jested a little shakily. She had not been looking forward to having devil guts splattered all over herself in some sort of final hellish curse.
"It is not," Mereth replied, her voice so toneless Tyene feared she had given offense for a moment before noticing the slightest tilt of her lips.
Alas, once they had finished interrogating the devil there was precious little to smile about. It's memories had confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt one of their darkest suspicions. The Lady of Spears was not being used by apostate priests to serve their own ends. Her allegiance has already been secured by Asmodeus and through her many faithful Unsullied. The promised prize none other than an infernal arch-duchy. The belier suspected it would be Mammon's head which would fall to make room for her, but
that he was less certain of. Of more immediate use were the names of the Meereenese families already paying homage to Asmodeus: Dhazak, Galare, Loraq, Rhazdar, Uhlez and Zhak are among that number with the House of Pahl not yet snared but soon to be along with Yherizan, whose head of House had almost been killed with the safe house trap.
Worse still the plot extended to Astapor and Yunkai, though it was somewhat less entrenched there and indeed it is with support of these cities that the Sons of the Harpy are able to continue operating in Meereen in defiance of Asmodeus' will.
"Well fuck, there goes making an alliance with the Lady of Spears to get her worshipers' balls back," Tyene sighed wearily.
Yrael did not look impressed, probably upset at the profanity, but really it wasn't like Tyene didn't agree that the Unsullied had shitty lives and deserved better, but if you couldn't laugh at the stuff you might find yourself crying soon. "Perhaps she can be persuaded to renege on the bargain..." he glanced at Mereth, but the fury shook her head.
"It's flattering that you would make the comparison, but I was a foot soldier... well alright, a petty officer in the service of one of his generals. Freeing me and my sisters of the pact with Hell would prove light as a feather compared to doing the same to a mortal goddess who agreed to a deal recently."
To that the steel-winged Lord of Mantarys had no reply, his expression only darkening further.
Teana broke the silence. "So what do we do? Start a campaign of assassination now that we have names, try to attack the interests of the Lady of Spears..." With evident distaste she added. "Try to contact the Sons of the Harpy?"
