@DragonParadox, on the subject of Giants, remember that overcrowded village of Stone Giants that was vassalized to House Adjar of the Opaline Vault?

They rebelled against House Adjar and robbed their Mithril Mines, and we were sent there to slap them down (which we did, only needing to slay the rebellion leader). Afterwards we saw that they were very badly overcrowded for any Giant settlement and offered to take on any of them who were willing to come with us as either employees or citizens depending on their preferences. Around seven took us up on the offer.

Since then, once the Terminus has set up, has word spread to the various other Stone Giants? Have we gotten more immigrants there?

A handful of outcasts, most stone giants prefer living under stone rather than the vast empty sky if they can help it.

@DragonParadox, we are slowly building an Undercity for Sorcerer's Deep if they're interested. That's where the Kobolds are going to be, IIRC. Same with the newly immigrated Ratfolk.

True, more will likely come in time.

slowly building an Undercity

*shudders in Forsaken (1)*

Do we have a better name for that?

1) Warcraft Forsaken were free willed undead who broke free form the Lich King, reclaimed their capital, and built on their former sewages and catacombs. The place was fucking depressing (still cool as shit for the whole undead thing, though). So that name makes me think about both that and the Skaven. And we are better than that.

That's precisely why I'm calling it the Undercity. ;)

I'm also calling the Ratfolk "Skaven" in my head. I've been playing a shit ton of Total War: Warhammer II recently and one of my provincial capitals was nuked by Skaven, so here it tickles me pink that their equivalent in this quest are our minions.

Part MMMCDXCIII: Shifting Roots
Shifting Roots

Thirteenth Day of the First Month 294 AC

You make good time southwards afterwards, the giants seeming to draw heart from the sight of the blade strapped across Mag Mar's back with a simple leather sheath while the Moonchaser above is a source of wonder. Gilly meanwhile has hardly left the ship after it arrived with the rest of her kin. According to Tyene she has both found some comfort in her family and given such to those in desperate need.

There has been a touch of trouble with a few of the Free Folk taking poorly to flying through the air in a magic ship. After all, all they had known of sorcery was whatever the hells Craster did, but Moonsong managed to set their minds at ease, enough at least that they prefer the skyship over an 'army of giants'. Speaking of the reactions to said host.

"All of Whitetree has gone to ground in the woods?" you ask Dany who is still serving as your most advanced scout, her silvered wings carrying her farther and faster than the false ravens.

"Most of those who are left," she explains. "From the looks of things about a third of the cottages have been empty for months, hopefully off to join Mance in Hardhome..." There is no need to speak the darker alternative, not after what you had faced yesterday. The servants of Winter may be hidden under the light of day, but they were already abroad in the Far North and growing bolder by the day.

"So who is left in the village now?" Lya asks from beside you.

"A few old folk who either couldn't or wouldn't leave. I had a chat with one of the bolder of them once I managed to convince him we mean no harm. He even told me where to find the rest... in exchange for healing all his ailments, a promise to take him with us and a pouch of silver."

"Sharp trader, maybe we can hire him for Silver Serpent," you snort, preparing to meet the locals. Bringing a few more Free Folk in addition to the giants past the Wall wouldn't be a problem with the Lord Commander you know, not as long as you take them far away where they will not be his problem nor that of the Northern Lords.

Fourteenth Day of the First Month 294 AC

By the time the Wall rises over the southern horizon you are accompanied by some three hundred Free Folk, whatever livestock they wanted to bring along since you could not very well refuse them when the giants had kept their mammoths, and you imagine most remarkably to any Black Brothers watching from the Wall, the ancient tree for which Whitetree is, or rather was, named. By Vee's reckoning it should be well over a thousand years old, not quite as venerable as the one in Thenn which you had already relocated to Last Refuge, but still a fair anchoring for wards and blessings.

Gained 303 Free Folk Refugees

Gained the Tree of Whitetree

Lost 50 IM

How do you want to make your way through the Wall?

OOC: This is also the vote to do anything at the Wall if you like. For anyone wondering there was no encounter planned for Whitetree, it's too far south for the others to properly challenge a convoy like this one.

How will we ever financially recover from this? /s
I love that this quest is so lovingly curated that even when operating on the scale of national budgets, we still track expenses this small.
Forever a nod to our years of extreme poverty.

A dragon never forgets.

-[X] Ferry them through Castle Black, meet with Lord Commander Mormont and get an update on the situation of the Night's Watch and the sorts of things they've been dealing with (political and supernatural) and how the overall Wildling evacuation is going, say hi to Maester Aemon, then return to Sorcerer's Deep with the Giants and your vassals in tow.
-[X] Give the Night's Watch three Banners of Restful Nights, 50 Healing Belts, 50 PfE Rings, 50 Muleback Cords, 20 Handy Haversacks, 20 pairs of Soulfire Bracers, 20 Earrings of Arcane Acuity, 5 Gravewatch Pendants, 20 Sending Stones, 50 Traveler's Any-Tools, 20 Launchers, 200 Alchemist's Fire Launcher Munitions (equivalent to 2,000 vials), 200 Heatstones, 500 doses of Antiplague, and 1,000 doses of Healing Salve.
-[X] See if it'd be possible for Aemon to visit Sorcerer's Deep for a bit.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

Nice bonus with the Wildlings. It's neat to have the Whitetree in reserve as a potential anchor for powerful blessings or wards.

I still remember when 50 IM would have been a significant expenditure which we would have agonized over making. Times have changed! :grin2:

@Duesal, do you think it's worth asking Aemon to come visit us in SD for a while? Even if he won't let us kill and Reincarnate him, or retire from the Night's Watch, it will do him good to live under the blessings of the Tree of the Dawn Age for a month or two. Existing without feeling the effects of his advanced age might be enough to convince him to make the move permanent, or even to accept Reincarnation.

Sure, we can always ask if he'd like to visit. I'm always up for Aemon staying with us.

And then we can give him a Dragon egg to hatch and raise, and some eager students to teach, and a nice lecture hall in the Shadow Tower, and before he knows it, we've worn away his resistance and he's living in SD full time in a newly Reincarnated body. Muahahaha! :drevil:

I've always loved that the ultimate goal here is to convince Aemon to commit suicide. Makes me laugh every time.

I'm definitely looking forward to giving him his own Valyrian Dragon Egg when he finally gives in.

Hilariously, the Night's Watch are the closest thing to Targaryen Loyalists without actually being allowed to swear to us.

Before we came along they were destitute, running short on every supply you could think of, mostly populated with nothing but underfed undertrained criminals scraped from the dungeons and cells of Westeros.

Then we showed up, and the Night's Watch gets:
  • Gold, enough to buy small kingdoms
  • Magically hardened supplies of all stripes including sets of Reinforced Segmented Hardened Steel Fullplate for every Night's Watch member which even lords would have been proud to bear
  • A copy of the Legendary Map of the Farthest North to replace their embarrassingly inaccurate maps
  • A restored library
  • Magic healing
  • Consecrated Weirwood Heart Trees
  • Their abandoned castles repaired and refurbished by magic
  • Magic Items, including Valyrian Steel blades
  • Magic Training
  • A concrete plan to evacuate the Wildlings so the Night's Watch doesn't have to be worried about a hundred-thousand wights or wraiths (or at least a hundd-thousand more)
  • Rescued Children of the Forest
  • Rescued Westerosi Giants
  • A restored reputation which Lord Commander Mormont took advantage of to boost recruitment
  • Forces of the Imperium stationed with the Night's Watch
  • Semi-Regular help from Viserys and the Companions against the stronger things Beyond the Wall
If it didn't go directly against their vows they'd have already bent the knee. As is they are more than happy to follow our lead.
