Part MMMCDXXII: Knowledge Sharper than Swords
Knowledge Sharper than Swords

Twenty-Fifth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

Unlike the Sealord and or Hermetia, who are obviously relieved to be gone from under the heavy darkness of the Shadow Tower and talk of otherworldly wars Zherys lingers in Sorcerer's Deep with news, not only of the dead 'brigand' on the paths of the Dimwell Delving but also secrets bound in the ash you had gathered from the manse of the doomed Magister Tagar. From there the fire of Volantis' magic had truly kindled and in those tomes some secrets lingered. Perhaps you shall have your opportunity to battle Ymeri Queen of the Inferno sooner than you'd thought.

"He was not as ignorant as I had assumed," Zherys explains, setting the parchments down before you carefully, each marked with his looping almost ornate script. A personal report. "That of course makes him even more of a fool of course, but that is water down the Rhoyne."

"What did he seek then in opening the way for Ymeri's Herald and almost for the Ashen Queen herself?" you ask, eyes already sliding down the list of books. Many of them are tomes you already have, sometimes in more complete iterations besides, but there are a few that catch your eye—texts on alchemy, healing and blood sorcery.

"Not merely to become a sorcerer able to summon power with a whispered incantation, he wished to become immortal, imperishable... fey."

"And thus eternally under the dominion of Ymeri," you interject with dawning realization and horror. "She was not trying to burn down Volantis, though it would have burned, and she was not trying to awaken magic and gain sorcerous servants, but instead kindle in the souls of those strong enough to bear the burden the fires of faerie. She sought to strengthen her court and anchor it to the Material World all at once."

"Yes," the former High Speaker of the Mysterium nods, the softness of his voice not veiling his anger. "Akin though crueler by far to what the Court of Stars is attempting in the Sunset Lands. Still, Tagar's books provide some insight into the transmutation of souls and flesh. Perhaps the Lady Lya might find some use for them."

Gained Tagar's Library
Common Knowledge

  2. Knowledge (Nature) +3
  3. Knowledge (The Planes) +1

Ritual Lore
Flawed/Incomplete Notes on Fey Transformation (Cinder Court)

Zherys pauses for a moment, uncharacteristically hesitant. "It would be best if this information were not shared with all those Awoken in Volantis. Most of us have the good sense not to seek such a poisoned chalice, but everywhere there are fools who would don chains for the illusion of power."

"You suspect the ritual could still be completed?" you ask, concerned.

"Not as it was intended, but it is the nature of kindling to leap into flame," he replies simply.

"I will see to it that it is only shared with trusted scholars," you pledge. It is not the first piece of perilous lore the Scholarum holds, and it shall not be the last.

***

Your next visitor for the day also comes bearing lore, though thankfully without grim tidings. Urzig of the Monastery of the Unbroken Circle does not bow as he enters the room, but presents his hands palm forward in the traditional Githzerai gesture of welcome to one's host, an act which leaves the stack of almost translucently thin stone tablets hovering in mid air. "I have come bearing the knowledge you sought of the Slave Masters and of the first steps along the Path of the Unbroken."

Motioning the stack of documents forward he adds: "Now you, Dragon Lord, are the Teacher who must decide who is ready to learn and in what manner. For myself I ask only that you be kind with this gift, for knowledge of the Slave Masters can break the hearts of those who do not know themselves enough."

"Of course," you nod, taking the offered slates. Truth be told you do not have the time to read though yet another arcane tradition, but there are those whom you trust with such lore. A raven borne message summons a Fury assigned to the library to bear this lore to the more accessible reaches of the Scholarum's collection.

Gained Basic Githzerai Lore
  1. Knowledge (Dungeoneering) +7
  2. Knowledge (Psionics) +4
  3. Autohypnosis +2 (Skill Unlocked for Training)

Not all lore, however, can be written upon parchment or carved upon stone, not all power so gifted. Your thoughts turn to the Facless and their Many-Faced God. Perilous as walking upon the blade of a knife, the abyss stretching out below. The knowledge that there is one among that grim order who can invoke even miracles by the power of his pact with death is chilling, but the lore they laid out here... yes, that you can certainly use if the gods of your realm should consent to offer up their power.

  1. 1 Grandmaster Assassin (Level 15) Ur Priest
  2. 9 Master Assassins (Level 12) [2 Ur Priests; 3 Wizards/Veiled Illusionists; 4 Master Spies]
  3. 81 Assassins (Level 6) [31 Wizards/Veiled Illusionists; 50 Master Spies]
  4. 729 Initiates (Level 3) [Most Expert or Rogue; have not chosen a path]
Lore of Training Ur Priests Acquired

Which god do you first ask about the possibility of creating Ur Priests?

[] Yss

[] Old Gods

[] The Ferryman

[] Weeping Lady

[] Moonsinger Goddess

[] Zathir

OOC: Keep in mind you guys are not shopping for a new coat here. You are asking for a massive boon and a degree of trust that is outright unnatural for most divine/mortal interactions. It's probably best to focus on the ones you feel will be the most receptive and whose price you can best afford to pay.

Wow, the Faceless Men are a big operation. They don't need to run solo ops or anything. If they wanted to, they could send a whole bataillon of skilled killers and mages against a target ! They pretty much have entire Inquisition branches ready to be deployed against a single target !

Flawed/Incomplete Notes on Fey Transformation (Cinder Court)
We've got quite a few means of transformation at our disposal these days.

1. Ritual to transform people into immortal constructs
2. Ritual to turn Devils into Native Outsiders bound to Viserys (in progress IIRC, but still)
3. Reincarnate which is the Russian Roulette of getting a new body unless guided by a Limited Wish at least
4. Straight up making a new body in a Flesh Forge and binding one's soul to it
5. This Cinder Court Fey Transformation ritual we've just partially received
6. The various forms of undead (Lichdom, Dracolichdom, Vampirism, etc)

I'd definitely like to poke at this Fey ritual. I feel like this is a big step in being able to use the Fey Forge in the reflection of Lys in the Feywild, instead of it just popping out random Fey one after the other.

Anyway, out of this list, the Old Gods fit the bill in terms of trust as well as greater depth of magic. Zathir isn't someone I want to ask to give more when he needs to conserve his strength still, and Yss we have so many arrangements with that I don't want to throw our relationship all out of whack with a heavy ask that straddles the border of his berserk button.

why do we want to get Ur-priests again
They're a powerful class, and they combo crazily well with things like Mystic Theurge or various weaker PrCs that would otherwise make you lose too many spellcasting levels but that do bring interesting abilities.
They also have interesting background fluff, which is nice.

Keep in mind that many of those those seven hundred odd initiates will never see an assassination after they are deemed unsuitable in some way. Some of them will be used for stuff like intelligence gathering, others will simply maintain the temple and other infrastructure

Blood Wish is no longer necessary to guide a Reincarnation spell. Lya can use Inspired Spell to duplicate a Cyclic Reincarnation spell, and Viserys can do the same with Miracle.

Yes. But I'm ignoring Cyclic Reincarnation. That just gives you a younger body of the same species and gender (and bloodline apparently). Reincarnation is what can change your species.

It would be great if we can train Ur-Priests of willing deities, but wouldn't it be better if we trained Ur-Priests of the Seven?

Yeah, they are more numerous and powerful than I was expecting. They're a great resource to call all further down the line.

Chancellor Viserys: "Do it."

Brienne of Tarth: "Should I do it?" :thonk:

Chancellor Viserys: "Do it. Kill him."

Brienne of Tarth: "OKAY."

Chosen of the Father: *surprised Pikachu*

Yeah, and its, what, a half of the total Faceless numbers?
With the rest of the Faceless blatantly going off the grid just so they wont have to bow down to our rules?

I'm happy and simultaneously unhappy about this :/

I sure do hope the MAs noted down at the start of the month have been having some success in tracking the cells of the Outlaw!Faceless.

Also, @DragonParadox, any new dead drops of matrials for the Chosen of Smith? We were keeping the eye out with daily Divination IC.

Tfw you make only 7 mortal champions because purity and tradition, then a neighbourly dread dragon emperor siphons off the rest of your power; No sense letting it go to waste, after all.

@DragonParadox, regarding the Githzerai, have the Flesh Forged beasts we've sold to them given them enough of an edge in Elysium that some of their master crafters are available? I want that Psionic Mind Blank.

YFW you decide to make an army of heroes because the Great Crusade can only be done with mass scale heroics and production model legends.

GEoM: "WAIT UNTIL YOU GET TO THE SECRET PROJECT STAGE HIDDEN FROM EVEN YOUR TWENTY TRANS-DRAGON SONS. ONE OF THEM WILL PROBABLY RUIN EVERYTHING BECAUSE THEY FUCKED WITH PSIONICS AT THE WRONG MOMENT EVEN THOUGH YOU TOLD THEM NOT TO."

Viserys: "That is... a highly specific example."

GEoM: "ACROSS ALL OBSERVABLE TIMELINES, THAT ONE ALWAYS HAPPENS."

Gotta wonder how beautiful the screams and death throes would be for the Chosen of the Mother and Maiden? Would it be akin to multiple nails dragging themselves through your brain in a high-pitched choir of shriek? Or would it be like pulling the innards of a pregnant cow as it wailed like a banshee?

Either way it's gonna be pretty~.
