It's called Tixeo, and it costs money. It's probably not the only "better than Skype" service out there if you're willing to shell out actual cash.
Thankfully, my job doesn't require much communication between office branches (nothing that can't be accomplished by phone or email) so I've not had to use the various communication software suites we've had at my company in the last few years. I can't remember all of them off the top of my head, but one of them actually was a professional version of Skype, I think, then it was something else, then Microsoft Teams, and now it's something else again. The person in charge of this stuff can't make up their mind which they like, so they end up changing it again and again, normally just after people have managed to figure it out and start using it without many issues.

We also have "Work Facebook" called Workplace. I can't say for sure, but going by employee numbers and activated features versus what I've seen of license fees when researching it, the company is probably paying around $8,000 to 10,000 per month for this piece of crap. I've managed to avoid Facebook since it went live, yet now I have to use the work version to disseminate important information that was once emailed directly to the people it was intended for.

My previous company did the same, which is why I was asking. The IT department was also enamoured with using ever more convulent chat programs, which nearly resulted in me hosting a IRC server on a Pi for my team, just to be "on the bleeding edge".

Someone agrees with me!

I got introduced to Rational fiction and when I did, it didn't take me long to realize it was all just masturbatory garbage, the kinds of people who do feel the need to write that garbage are also generally self-absorbed smug little shits.

When I do see well structured plot-lines that seem to make internal and consistent sense, excellent! Even better if characterization remains consistent, and the people therein absolutely do not have to behave rationally all of the time, they merely need to have a rationale that you can actually intuit, even sympathize with, so that they become more than one-dimensional cut-outs formed as part of a conflict triangle.

May I recommend Luminosity? It does a good job of resculpting the Twilight canon into an interesting take on vampirism and romance.

Interlude DCCXLVIII: Pride and Patience
Pride and Patience

Eighteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

Above the Ash Stain, Sea of Fire, The Eternal Furnace

Previous parts of the Interlude series here: One, Two

The dragon Amrelath, whom men called the Ash Risen, looked down at the formation of sword ships below him half in avarice half in wariness. There were more of them than the priestess' of flames had shown and little as his kin thought of gods he had never known this Lord of Light to lie. It could of course simply be a case of orders being creatively reinterpreted below the plans of the high command, the efreeti were certainly not above intrigues in the midst of war, but something reeked of more than ash and brimstone to his senses. Young he might still seem by the measure of the red wryms who had once ruled the fourteen fires and once he had been foolish with it, but the long ages of living death tormented by the memories of his youth had taught him caution.

"Zavaenia," he called to the younger dragon upon the corsair ship still hidden by the shifting ash clouds rising from the waves, some two leagues city-wards. "I think it might be wise to scout more thoroughly than usual before joining our puppets to that gathering."

"We are already late, the High Whip will already be suspicious of our heading, having just missed the rebel fleet,"
the young one replied impatiently. "Captain Yrten says..."

Fate and Fortune guard me from barely hatched dragons taking the advice of mortals without thought or reservation.
The elder dragon had to practically bite down on the flame in his throat to keep it from giving away his presence through ash and arcane veil both. "Has it occurred to you that Captain Yrten has never comanded more than three ships in his life, nor has he ever tried his subversion on anyone but gutless guileless merchants?"

"Without guts and guile here?"
she snipped. Briefly Amrelath contemplated the possibility that she was being difficult on purpose, offering a challenge, but there was nothing of mockery to her tone or the vicious anticipation of a battle for dominance. That did nothing to sweeten his mood.

The familiar sleek contours of an ether-caster caught the dragon's eye. It had been blackened with soot and geese to make it seem like a more common weapon. Then he caught sight of the nimble ifrit climbing the rigging like one of the Essarians, the glint of an enchanted far-seer in hand. Far too precious a thing to hand to such a lowly slave without good reason.

Amrelath swept his wings down with all his strength, the silent glide transformed in an instant into swift flight even as he called out to the priestess. "Lady Melisandre, I have reason to believe our plans may have been compromised..."

Arguing with a priestess about the possible fallibility of her god-given visions was not something the dragon was looking forward to, much less this priestess. She would not be cowed by his presence, that he was certain of. Their battle in the Circle had been balanced on a knife's edge, just as likely to have fallen in her favor much as it galled him to admit.

To the dragon's surprise the answer was not dismissive, but thoughtful. "What did you see?"

"More ships, better weapons, a too-careful watch on the sky for a fleet fighting salamander rabble that is here to rendezvous with a friendly fleet besides,"
he reported.

"We could do without the final flourish, join with the salamanders and attack," the priestess noted. From the tone Amrelath guessed it was a notion she had already been considering before the latest news.

For a long moment there was silence as the dragon pondered the notion. They had five sword ships and three shield ships together with the Golden Wind against an enemy force of twelve sword ships and eight shield ships, one of which was of the glorious class, three times as large and depending on the armament perhaps even more dangerous.

By contrast the corsair fleet they had manged to gather included nineteen ships of various builds, all war-worthy. If they could be trusted to all hold the line Amrelath would have no trouble recommending strengthening their enthralled efreeti with cutthroats rather than attempting treachery after meeting with the other fleet as the original plan had entailed. The trouble of course was that they were raiders and sellsails, first to plunder and bold when it looked like they could get a rich cut, but looking out for their own skins before all else.

And on the third hand the enemy does not have a pair of dragons and one of the Lady Lya's spellsteel Heralds.

Allied Forces:
5 Efreeti Sword Ships (Enthralled and Geased)
3 Efreeti Shield Ships (Enthralled and Geased)
19 Salamander Corsair Ships

1 Adult Red Dragon (Amrelath)
1 Mighty Mind Dragon (Zavaenia)
Yrten and Siduri
5 Erinyes

Enemy Forces:
12 Efreeti Sword Ships
7 Efreeti Shield Ships
1 'Glorious' Class Efreeti Shield Ship

Unknown Heroes and Mages

What do the Fleet Comanders decide?

[] Try for the gambit anyway, meet up with the Efreeti Fleet in order to catch them between the hammer and anvil

[] All out attack with all current assets

[] Try to scout the enemy to see how much they might know

[] Write in

OOC: I hope putting the links above isn't too jarring. It won't be necessary in the future as interludes will be written together.

Assuming they do not sink into the literally endless depths you guys can loot them yes.
I'm so excited. Each Turtle Ship is just a sailable hoard of loot. :D

That said... I'm not confident about the balance of power. That's quite a bit more even in terms of power distribution than I'd like.

Are we allowed to send a Companion or two as support?

Moonchaser could probably tip the balance in this fight. It can provide fire support beyond the enemy's effective range.

You can send two people as reinforcements (even that is streaching it with all the the actions interupted once already to fight the Golden Company). No Moonchaser or wyverns though, it would take too long for them to get into position since there are no landmarks to aim the wheel of far travel on. There is a reason why ships that are capable of plansshift actually sail the sea of fire rather than skipping though some foreign plane for cheap teleport.

[X] Try to scout the enemy to see how much they might know.
-[X] Call for backup from Sorcerer's Deep while scouting. Rina and Vee will join the expedition to provide support.

Well I mean, technically speaking if the fight takes multiple hours, A) The Moonchaser can launch itself within 500 miles of any fixed point in the area. And B) It can travel that distance within an hour.
