I don't often do this but I found an utterly hilarious fic (the good kind of hilarious not so terrible it's funny or self-aware crack trying to get cheap laughs). Someone crossed over How to Train Your Dragon (the cartoon) with real life Eleventh Century History. Just the idea of a IP so silly Disney made it more serious in the adaptation being in the same post code the political skulduggery war and murder of the middle ages was enough to get me to click on it, but then it turned out the author actually had some knowledge of history and was actually interested in exploring the realistic repercussions of the premise. Fair warning though it's almost a million words long.

Anyway here's the link if anyone's curious.

You're writing this on page 14659 of a thread. Remember your audience! :D

More seriously, I appreciate recs, so feel free to post them whenever.
However I didn't like that fic at all. Maybe it's just me, but I disliked the way the story spends an awfully long time reminding us all how perfect and amazing he is at everything. And now our perfect polymath will drive technology centuries forwards in one fell swoop! And now he'll fix international relations!

Yeah that is a bit annoying, not to mention making Berk society more than a bit utopic, but hey at least there is actual world-building going into why and how all that stuff is.More importantly the heroes can fail too, the Byzantines get dragons and proceed to use them... well as you would expect an eleventh century power to use an air force.

Anyway I don't want to derail my own thread. Vote closed.

@Goldfish, here is the cheap bullet sponge I promised you. They only cost 7 IM per HP.

Necro-Harpy
Modelled after the bird-women of Ghis and the demonic Vrocks, these creatures are meant as cheap shock troops that soak up attacks to cover other combatants or try to overwhelm the enemy with the sheer weight of their bodies. Furthermore, they emit a revolting stench that can greatly reduce an opponents ability to fight back against them. They are also available as a aquatic version that replaces the arms and their membranous wings with flippers.
Necro-Harpy, CR 5
Advanced, Soulforged Necrocraft
Corpsecrafted, Bolstered Resistance
Cost 240 IM
NE Small undead
Init +4; Senses darkvision 60 ft.; Perception +0

DEFENSE
AC 25, touch 15, flat-footed 21 (+4 Dex, +6 natural, +1 Size, +4 Chsin Shirt)
hp 34 (4d8 + 12+ 4)
Fort +2, Ref +5, Will +6
Resistance Turning Resistance 8
Immune undead traits

OFFENSE
Speed 30 ft., fly 30 ft. (clumsy)
Melee 2x claws +8 (1d3+4); Reach 10 ft.
Special Stench

STATISTICS
Str 19, Dex 19, Con —, Int —, Wis 14, Cha 17
Base Atk +3
Feats Toughness B
SQ Construction Points (additional movement [fly], Reach, Stench)

Stench (Ex, 2 CP): The necrocraft has the stench ability (10-foot radius, Fort DC 17 negates, sickened for 1d6+4 minutes). This graft requires the body of at least one ghoul.

I've added 50 of these to the proposed order:
They're decent enough combatants on their own as CR 6 creatures, but their Crippling Hysterics ability is a really nice save-or-suck, especially with the Constitution boost from Advanced and the increased HD pushing the Fortitude saving throw DC up to 19 (or 21 with the Abilit Focus feat).

Even better, though, is their ability to duplicate certain types of Bardic music effects. Their Inspire Courage effect is a good area bonus on its own (+1 Morale bonus vs Charm & Fear effects, +1 Competence bonus on Attack and Damage rolls), but it's twice as effective for other Plant creatures. That's a significant boost when you consider how many of our aquatic forces are Plant-based.

We can spread these little guys out among our forces to improve everyone's effectiveness.

I am half wanting to read, half not wanting to as I worry about dragons going extinct like how some people worry about their lapdog children. (that has no bearing on my enjoyment of this quest, as the right to self defence is an important precedence. And I am glad we are not going to let anyone push our people around.)

At the mention of Byzantium up there, I almost thought it was this one httyd fic I read on deviantart, almost as long as this, where hiccup had run away in the first movie and had ended up a mercenary in Byzantium years latter for some time.

Do you still have a link to that? It sounds interesting.

This month were researching how to upgrade the Fungal Forge CR cap from 10 to 15.
I thought the old gods were auto upgrading it over time, now that they know how.
@egoo, we are phasing gold out of the economy. The only reason for us to take a silver mine would be to hope to find some Mithral among the shiny and useless stuff.

Also, unless the accounting sheet was messed up, there's over 50 million in the currency reserves.

In regards to Qohor, when we take out the forge, we might as well take the city. We would tear the beating heart out of their defenses, government and culture by doing that, so might as well plop down someone to rule it for us.
Silver is still a delicacy for both Xorns and dragons, so it will always have some value, gold and silver are getting way less valuable, but they will never be worthless.
It seems we need more sources of profit, and fucking fast.

Efreeti are kinda out of the question unless we either really luck out with another convoy-roll - and won't have any pressing matters to attend to in the 1st month - or we'd decide to attack the Adamantine mine directly.
Well we are going to get the Fire Whale information today, that's one of the projects that stand to make us a great big profit longterm, although since we have decided to make mercenaries for them, it take 3 months for a pod to begin to profit us, as the pod guardians cost us about 20k IM, on the bright side, seeing as the pod will be paying for those mercenaries each month, it do mean that we get 2000IM more per month, once the production cost of the guardians have been paid.

Silver is still a delicacy for both Xorns and dragons, so it will always have some value, gold and silver are getting way less valuable, but they will never be worthless.
I doubt that any planetosi deposits can hold a candle to what the PoE has to offer. The yield needed would be too high to mske it viable.

Part MMMCCXCIV: Upon an Anvil of Discord
Upon an Anvil of Discord

Sixth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

You had not planed on visiting Kelasi this month, but you are not one to turn away an unexpected opportunity from your door. Thus when Tacrit invites you to dinner that you might discuss 'varied business opportunities' you graciously expect. You could always use more allies, though not at the cost of stumbling into a conflict you have only the vaguest understanding of and now you have the chance to correct the lack.

"I'll speak to the chamberlain to offer felicitations and seek an audience for... next month?" Lya half asks, glancing towards the palace and its milling crowds of functionaries and guards. A long way from those first hesitant steps into Braavosi high society, you think, a small smile forming on your lips without thought.

"Early next month sounds excellent, the most pressing matters should be well done by then," you reply, not wanting to hint at what those matters are lest the Kelasi merchant balks at involving himself and his master the Emir in the quarrels of the dragon gods.

Being fair, he seems anything but wary of recounting Emir Ramsin's woes. He all but waxes lyrical upon the innocence and kindness of the young prince and princess whom the dragon had snatched away from their kith and kin and the general wickedness of Galzerai for imposing a tyrannical yoke upon the trade currents, enforced by ships that are little more than bloodthirsty pirates.

As someone who has actually enlisted former pirates in peace and in war, the latter part sounds like little more than imposing tolls on passing merchants with an admittedly draconic sense of reparations from those who refuse to pay said tolls or try to slip them past them by guile. If nothing else the wyrm is respecting the laws he set down in stone and made known far and wide rather than snatching anything that catches his eye, a ruler not a bandit by that measure no matter how little his neighbors may appreciate him.

Thus you turn to the matter of the hostage taking itself. That Galzerai had chosen to raid the palace after Kelasi troops headed out to raid the Deep Ones, ultimately keeping the Emirate out of the war, hardly paints a kindly picture, but the emir's reaction is far from ideal in your eyes also. Rather than seeking to negotiate, or if negotiations were impossible commit himself to battle, Ramsin al Kelasi had decided that the reasonable course of action was to put a bounty on the dragon's head and send a never-ending stream of sellswords, bounty hunters and assassins to his door. And then you find what the promised reward is in full...

"He promised the princess' hand in marriage to whoever kills the dragon?" you ask for confirmation, not bothering to keep the surprise out of your voice. "The same princess that is currently imprisoned by said dragon? That does not sound like a sensible way to obtain marital alliances..." or happy marriages, you think but do not say. The skill and luck needed to kill an elder wyrm is not a measure of anything beyond personal prowess. If the Emir were at least making some effort to select which of the would-be dragonslayers would set out upon their quest you would be more understanding, but this is andopen bounty. Anyone could claim it no matter their character, their skills or their allegiance.

"It is a fitting offer for one who would strike down so foul a foe," Tacrit shrugs. "The princess would no doubt be grateful to be freed from durance vile."

No doubt, you echo sardonically in the silence of your own mind, causing Varys to chuckle faintly from her perch on your shoulder. Still, the politics of Kelasi's royal house are ultimately of little importance to you. An alliance against the Deep Ones is the boon you seek, though before that there is one more answer you must have. "What of this anvil Galzerai claims was stolen from his hoard?"

"Miser's lies," the merchant scoffs. "The Anvil of the Lawsmith was fairly sold to the Emir's grandfather and no dragon forged it. I have seen this treasure with my own eyes and I tell you it was forged in Axis before the Sundering of the Spheres for their marks are upon it."

Interesting, you muse, perhaps the anvil itself might hold lore for Lya to unravel. In any case you would wager Althazi's pay twice over that there is more to the tale than that, but alas that is all the envoy knows.

What do you do next?

Okay, this is amazing.
This is not the plotline we were expecting, but it is the plotline we deserve. How can we have a Dragon Hero quest without a classic Dragon+princess plot?

Unless it's like Casterly rock and is a magical mine connected to the Plane of Earth, if that's the case it might be nearly as rich as a POE mine, and probably far safer, as the POE has a lot of nasty critters, that unlike Sothoryos critters, aren't all going to go away with a couple of Shadows of the Doom.

OOC: Just to be clear the merchant does not know Viserys is a dragon yet, but he has guessed he's some kind of powerful adventurer. Not yet edited.
Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP. Sorry I haven't helped more with editing over the past few days, my schedule hasn't synched up too well with chapter releases this week.

We're unlikely to just find one of those... But just in case, feel free to ask the House of Mirrors to run Divination checks or something. Or we could summon an Earth Elemental Weird and ask it to check the entire planet instantly for such a place.
Ah, high-level spells are so convenient sometimes.

Okay, this is amazing.
This is not the plotline we were expecting, but it is the plotline we deserve. How can we have a Dragon Hero quest without a classic Dragon+princess plot?
Seriously! No doubt @Duesal will be disappointed that Galzerai might not be the dragon he was hoping to add to the trophy room, but this plot line just got a lot more interesting and nuanced. Very neat turn of events, @DragonParadox.

That anvil is calling out to me, too. I want it...

Also, does this envoy think we're a dumbass or something? "no dragon forged it" - what a joke. As if Dragons forged their own hoards!

It doesn't matter if the PoB can keep up, in some ways that'd make it worse. The shock of losing its place as the hardest currency on the planet will shake the confidence of people the world over in its value.

Most of its current worth is in the general consensus that it has value as a medium of exchange, and therefore also as a store of wealth. If people stop believing this, which they will when its prices drop to the floor, then gold's actually value won't really be relevant to it's place as a currency.

You know, I do want to contact Galzerai. Not only do I want to know his side of the story, but I'm also wondering if he'd pay us to intercede on his side. We could try Diplomacy (or money, depending on the cost of the stolen thingy), or we could try stealing it ourselves.
Or we could go to Kelasi to learn more and see if an alliance is on offer. I don't know if they are the most useful military allies though... We'll see, I guess.

How much time do we have available for this action?

Yeah but we were talking about whether gold is worth mining, and even with planar values for it, with magic assistance for mining it, gold can be sold for enough to turn a profit.
