Part MMMCCXXV: Of Trade and Tears
Of Trade and Tears

Twenty Fifth Day of the Eleventh Month 293 AC

"I will ensure your people have ample trading partners, and give you personally all you will need to forge ties between the tribes, to assuage pride or ward against folly," you assure him. A warning must still be given for all the unexpected responsibility. "But I do not want to arm raiders, Mance. Tools you will get. If someone threatens you for which force alone compels you to fight and die or flee, bronze arms and arrows I shall grant you. Enough to begin to fight against man and simple beast, but not enough to allow breakaways to do more harm than good."

The not quite King Beyond the Wall ponders the matter for a long moment before nodding. "Fair point, though to be fair in turn I have to warn you, there's smiths among the clans, not many and not skilled outside the Thenns who kept to their vales, but they know how to forge a skinning knife into a spear point and with so many tools of steel around they'd have cause to sharpen their skills. I can't go looking through every forge day and night, or it would undo all the good of trying to bring them together."

"But you'd be able to tell if any of 'em have gone raiding?" Vee half asks. "Track 'em if you have to?"

"For reasonably large groups, certainly, and if they try to sneak out in dribs and drabs I'd know sooner rather than later. The Free Folk aren't what you call good at keeping secrets, we live too scattered to have much use for the skill usually." A clever point again, the man seems particularly skilled in holding up a mirror to his people and reading all he finds there, good and bad. Almost he reminds you of Rhango, if more glib in his manner.

"Good enough," you nod, handing him a stone of far-speech and explaining its purpose. "Send word if there should be more fools than you can reasonably handle... or if worse than men come upon you."

Silence falls then, but it is not a grim thing despite your last words. Mance sighs in relief as though the weight of a mountain was lifted from his shoulders. "Thank you, Your Grace." Then the mask of wit and roguish charm slips right back on. "I won't be doing any kneeling though until all the folk of Hardhome that want to leave are on Essosi land."

"That will not be for some months yet so you have the time to persuade them, use it wisely, and if you need any more particular help that is not urgent enough to use the magic of the stone I will send a raven."

With affairs of state resolved the remainder of the meal proves pleasant, though both you and Lya spend most of it answering questions so you do not have much time to ask many more of your own. If nothing else Yara's curiosity means that Sorcerer's Deep had gained its second skin-changer after lady Alysane Mormont. How would they react to one another, you wonder, the Northern warrior and Free Folk Spearwife yet so alike in the manner of their magic. You make a mental note to ask someone diplomatic make the introductions. Perhaps Danar Crowl, he likely comes the closest to bridging the divide with a silver tongue besides.

For now you have other matters to attend to.

***

The hour is far later in He'Nekar, the evening tide already bearing the bustle and profit of trade to a place that had once been visited only by those who braved the Demon Road. It brings other changes too, of course, already the old tongue of the city's eldest inhabitants is drowned out at the docks by accents from Volantis and Mantarys, even from as far away as Pentos and Braavos. However, there is one thing that had not changed with the influx of new people to the colony, the settlement's devotion to the Weeping Lady in her older form as a goddess of death. Traders and craftsmen alike had been impressed to find here a folk who already knew something of magic and owed by the scale of the ancient tomb-haven in which the Fourth Kinship had made its place.

So it is that you step into the Refuge of the Weeper. It had been mended here and there by skilled hands, but they had been discrete, the ancient hall and its statue of polished black stone are still here and Niselys still serves. Though you had not come in your own form so as not to cause a disturbance in the temple, the priestess picks you out at once, she had obviously been expecting you. The eyes of the gods in their own places of power will not be mislead even by such wards as you wear it seems.

The thought proves truer than you had first thought for after leading you into an alcove behind the statue she turns to you, form growing indistinct as though seen through a veil, or you suppose through tears. "A pity upon all the world that there must be wars, the wars of gods most of all, but you are right in your task. She must be put back."

The priestess, or rather the One who speaks through her, stretches out a hand, her meaning obvious. Light flows like water between her palms and when she hands it back, you feel it heavier. One step closer.

What do you do next?

[] Return to the Riverlands to speak to the Ghost of the High Heart

[] Speak with the Red Priests of Volantis and commune with the Red God himself to ask for aid against Tiamat

[] Have a personal meeting with the Chosen of Smith

[] Speak to the Mallery brothers and see if you can contact Mother Earth through the younger of the two

[] Write in

OOC: And here we are. Not the most exciting update I'm afraid but it does move things along.

[X] Speak to the Mallery Brothers and see if you can contact Mother Earth though the younger of the two
I would rather give a deity we are nominally on good terms with more power, than one who only seems to tolerate the fact that the worship of other deity's is encouraged in the Deep.

[X] It is long past the time to meet and deal with Faceless Men of Braavos.
-[X] They are a part of the realm now - and so they fall under the laws of Scholarum, they shall submit all the lore they have.
--[X] Ensure all the lore of Faceless Men is submitted to review, but with how strong of an organization they are, they may desire for trade instead.
--[X] Trade for artifacts and/or magic items, if they possess any.

-[X] And while we are at it... Their organization shall either have a tight set of limits on what they can do within the confines of your Empire - or have no place in it at all. We cannot afford an unaffiliated cult of Assasins running around.
--[X] Talk to the leadership of the Faceless, and try to find a middle ground - we'd waste far too much time purging them, after all, and there will always be better targets to turn their ire towards, than mere mortal men.

Btw, here is what we had for "Chosen of the Smith"-action, beyond the one-liner present in the chapter:
[X] Have a personal meeting with the Chosen of Smith.
-[X] Extensively divine irregular points of interest about him and his works - just in case, since one favored by Smith can prepare far more of a trap than a regular cleric.
--[X] Check his supply routes, from where he gets the materials for enchanting - and the people he interacts with along the way, including those he gives the items to, and who gave him the order of Dragon-slaying weaponry. Such spell as Hindsight may come especially in handy if he interacted with someone protected by Mindblank, giving us at least a clue to investigate.
--[X] With Chosen of Crone having been helping him, also try to affect the same general points about her and сompany she keeps.
---[X] Learn the interests and priorities of Chosen of Crone, the people they keep company with - a usual thorough investigation in search of clues for a possible trap.
-[X] If no suspicious activity is detected via divination, meet with him - the focus of the meeting is to set up at least mild relationship with the Chosen, and ensuring he focuses on bigger threats to people of Westeros than us.
--[X] Sharing with him our wast array of Lore on Enemies of All (Devils, Demons, Daemons, Others, Illithid, Fey, Rakshasa, Tiamat, etc.-) is a big aspect of this. There is also the potential of directly sponsoring him (see: Warrior's Chosen) if all goes well...
We have quite a few background checks to do if we are going to meet him.
Thankfully, our new Divination spells are bullshit.

[X] Speak with the Red Priests of Volantis and commune with the Red God himself to ask for aid against Tiamat

We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I met you I was but the learner. Now, *I* am the master.

Rh'llor: Only a master of evil, Viserys Targaryen.

His Redness needs to be addressed. We could perhaps get this together with sanctifying his temple in SD?

Also @DragonParadox, the Weeping Lady's colors was blue-green? last time we spoke with her.

Btw, we really have not been keeping a tight lid on our plans.
From telling Mind-dragons while Timmie was actively listening (but the latest example, really), to many other, smaller slights.

I feel like that's hubris.
:confused::confused::confused:

No wonder even WLoL knows about this.

This is in another god's place of power while they are present, if this is not a safe place to discuss the plan than nowhere is. Also I don't think you guys mentioned anything about the Well of Eternity to the Mind dragons, just that you are fighting her which is self-evident. Viserys suspects the Weeping Lady knows from communing with other gods you have already enlisted. Gods do speck to each other

Now I kinda want the newest GodsApp chat as Omakes.

So let me get this straight, our Gods are aware we are recruiting like half a dozen Gods to strike a blow to one?

That's incredibly badass. I wonder what conversations they have about our collective audacity?

I have been going with this plan with two schools of thought.

1. Tiamat knows and is going to play our game anyway because her Pride Domain makes her, well, Proud enough to assume whatever we have won't work and that she will take us out in one swoop.

2. Tiamat doesn't care because her pride makes her think that she can handle whatever we throw at her and won't even bother to look into the plan itself.

Really both schools of thought depends on how proud she is feeling.

Edit: Right voting

@DragonParadox, does this mean Niselys is a cleric now?

"A pity upon all the world that there must be wars, the wars of gods most of all, but you are right in your task. She must be put back."
Anyone else catch this part?

Interesting, eh? Was Tiamat imprisoned up until recently? Maybe her release coincided with the return of magic? Cause vs correlation?

Am I the only one who wants to break the wildlings pride? Because they are shaping to be even more trouble than the dothraki withe none of the upsides

We should remind him that worst comrs to worst the wildlings will leave the north in a pile instead of walking.

@Goldfish, @Duesal

Ultimately we're the ones doing them a favor with this evacuation. If they insist on becoming conscript wights in the armies of the Others I'll make sure to collect the corpses.

EDIT: To clarify, that doesn't mean we kill them. I'm just utterly confident that whatever holdouts there are Beyond the Wall will not survive Winter, and they will inevitably become Wights.

So uh I've been thinking. How difficult would it be to put that Communal PfE Banners effect on the Moonchaser and future ships for their crew? In case of wide range fear, illusion and Mindcontrol effects?

Remember that Lawful Good bear? We swore an oath in front of a heart tree that we'll get every human beyond the wall before winter comes, or did you forget that?

We'll have to get all of them south, wether they like it or not.
