If the attack is not physical then it is some sort of disinformation. I'm not sure we should stop documents getting out in that case.

I just can't think of any reasons not to do this. Worst case scenario one of the four is killed. Anything else could range from the survivors being injured, their abilities shown, them being tired, Mathilde having enough info to use her Learning, etc.

Considering that k8p was the home base, the fastidiously tidy room, and that they 'only' had 50, i don't think they are very easy to maintain/replace.

Way I see it, the argument for not doing it is in the "must". Mat is precomitted to killing them both, if it turns out the Eshin isn't attacking, or his attack is false documents, or something. Hell, maybe the pages are poisoned, but they both leave alive for now. With both must die, Mat just might attack them both, to keep that decision/commitment.

The trio huddled together, as sounds of carnage and warfare echoed all around them. Master had told them to eliminate any of the Mors-traitors that tried to pass through the gate, but so far none had.

For the fourth time, Knawruto began scratching at the wall he was clinging to with anticipation, and for the fourth time Sakurat hit him over the head to stop creating so much noise.

A distant rumbling shook the mountain, and the young assassins knew that it must have been caused by the Ice-Covered Beast - but fighting such a foe was far beyond mere apprentices. At least it was far away.

And yet... the screaming they heard was all too close. Not the mere yells of battle, this was the remaining Mors stormvermin and Eshin gutter runners alike screaming in terror at something - then falling abruptly silent.

Squeaksuke peaked out around the corner. "The fog-mist is getting much-much thicker. It's coming this way."

Sakurat's fur stood on end. "It must-must be Mathilde, the Demon of the Hidden Mist!"

Knawruto looked at her blankly, so she sighed. Why had her master chosen such a fool-simple apprentice to be on her team? "She's an A-Rank shinobi of the Grey College Clan! They say she destroyed the Drakenhof bat-things in a single night!"

It's already the case where Kazador is concerned, and I can easily see it for the rest of the empire. The reason is pretty simple: For all her talents, sublety really isn't one of them. I'd say the Black College is probably the most subtle big thing she did, and that had her killing in the streets and depopulating a castle. I repeat, Killing the entirety of a castle is peak subtlety for Mathilde. Because at least the castle was still standing afterwards.

All the other Grey Wizards do important but dirty work, but their most spectacular feats (and most feats in general) are only ever known to a few. Meanwhile, Mathilde prances around leading armies, destroying strongholds, building doom towers, getting knighted and starting gambling parties. So if the average man hears "Grey Wizard", what will come to mind?

And really, I think the Grey Wizards would like it that way. It's much easier to be a sneaky bastard if nobody is expecting you to be one.

That's not really true? We do subtle just fine, see all the stuff we were doing when we were Van Hal's Intrigue adviser; we did plenty of sneaky about without really anyone else being the wiser, we kidnapped a guy form his own home. Maybe we're not always the most subtle, 'handing toppling one domino to see the others fall perfectly' agent out there but we're not exactly incapable, it's just that for the last however many turns we've been in a situation where that isn't really possible. First as part of the expedition, where we needed results fast rather than results quietly and since then as Belegars Learning Advisor where most of our job is figuring stuff out but we occasionally moonlight as a scout/assassin. And critically most of our targets are those that we can't really do subtle with, skaven and orcs are both pretty hard to infiltrate for us requiring the use of magic, even then it's imperfect and not entirely reliable, and they don't respond the same way humans do to psychological levers.

Honestly, unless we turn our attention towards internal Empire shenanigans I don't see much opportunity to stretch our more subtle skills. Until and unless we go to Nagarythe.

All the way down to their dependents assaulted and slain to the last by an unexpected attack.
All the way down to holding off another endless horde at the same time, beset on all sides.
All the way down to their last King, surrounded by the most loyal, well equipped and skilled warriors taking the desperate fight to the enemy to either win free or do as much damage to their enemy as they can on the way out.

Squeaksuke is the most skilled of the trio, having pushed himself to make up for the shame of the Ucheeseha Clan, who were disgraced after one of their members proved more loyal to the Council of 13 than to Clan Eshin.
