I think that this is a good a reason as any now. What possessed him to think that was a good idea is beyond me.
Not to mention that:

1. Killing one dragon won't have any impact whatsoever on a population.
2. Brine Dragons are far from the only ones -- that we know of there are a whole bunch of Shadow Dragons
To be fair it was Deep One loot. The elder dragon might have been right and not just greedy (that greed was involved is not a question)
I would put more trust in this had the Old Brine Dragon bought the loot instead of confiscated it. That he did the latter confirms he didn't actually care about Relath, he just saw a chance for a quick cash grab.

Besides, you said it yourself -- Brine Dragons will cheerfully bully anything weaker than them, while submitting to the strong.

I would just as happily gank the Old Brine Dragon as the next murderhobo, but before we start planning too in-depth, we need to learn the political landscape of this region of the Plane of Water, and whether or not it will negatively impact our relations with Vialisk.

I value close economic and diplomatic ties with another extraplanar trade city far more than I do stroking Relath's murderboner.

Fair enough. Let's hope that we can do both. As for now its time to head to the city of Visalisk.

I grudgingly agree, I just hope this Old Brine Dragon isn't anyone politically important. I don't want to miss our first chance in a long time for dragonslaying.

Yo, we can always go out and kill that Necromancer-Dragon, making PoE safer while grabbing some very shiny loot ourselves.

Our party is definitely on par for that sort of encounter these days.
[] A Hateful Eye: Go into the Plane of Earth, to take out Thrasyr, The Hateful Eye. His slights against Shaitan and Efreeti alike had made him no friends, but more importantly, he holds many a treasure beyond mere riches – his knowledge on Undeath may prove to be extremely useful against many dangers Garden faces these days. (Opposition: Very Old Hex Dragon (CR 19), Rewards: ??)

It would have fewer moral implications than going out specifically for Brines either, since they usually have some redeeming qualities.

I'm all for doing that one day. I want its corpse.

By the way, I looked up Hex Dragons in the Dragon Magazine.

A Very Old casts as a CL 15 Sorcerer and being a Hex Dragon automatically knows all Enchantment and Necromancy spells on the Sorcerer list.
That is of course assuming no class-levels.

Physically a Hex Dragon is relativly weak for an 28HD Huge Dragon especially on the offence, but still tough and with excellent saves.

Do you recall which issue had them?

So, @DragonParadox, in rough terms of political situation that we don't yet know OOC (but probably have some understanding IC), how likely would be us getting Marid riled enough up to go to war with Efreet as the 3rd Genie faction to join the Alliance?

We have enough proof of Efreeti depravity (efreeti wish-slaves we can summon, lore on making Divs, etc.) and profits to be made in siding with the Alliance both.

It kinda depends on details which we don't know though.
Marids are assholes, but if we can use them... why wouldn't we?

Getting any one emirate should be posibile, however it would be practically impossible to get them to unite under a common cause. They hate each other.

...enough so that whichever group we choose their rivals would actually work with CoB, just to spite them?

Hm, now there's a thought.

We should look into whether any of them already work with CoB and contact their opponents.
