Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
A few reasons:

• Scouting is time sensitive.
The Skaven, Gobins, and Orcs aren't going to be sitting still, waiting for us to move. They have their own plots, their own plans, and if we want K8P to actually last as long as KaK, having info on that is critical.

• It's Mathilde's biggest possible contribution.
We made our legend among the dwarves doing scouting and sabotage in the mountains here. Continuing to do this, now, during the consolidation phase, lets Belegar respond to any criticisms he might hear from the dwarves about letting a wizard do her experiments in his mountain in the most direct way possible.
Yeah, this. It's practically physically impossible for this expedition's arrival and success to not provoke responses, and knowing those responses in some way ahead of time safeguards both Karak Eight Peaks the place and accomplishment and hope for the future, and Karak Eight Peaks our future home for the time being.

If it isn't shown as a result of this vote in the next update, someone needs to make a snip of Roswita finding out about how receptive the dwarves have been to Mathilde's wizardly self. The sheer irony of Mathilde getting sacked for being too magical for her to trust, only to get picked up by the most anti-magic and pro-tradition of the Empire's allies...

looks like he wishes he could disappear up his own helmet.
I had a good hard laugh at this. Thank you.

"What sort of fellow Belegar is," you reply distractedly, your pistol tracking a particularly agile goblin who was scampering up a stalagmite with a knife in his teeth. With the clean crack of quality gunpowder igniting, he falls backwards with a squeal.
Good show!

A position could be created that equates to it, but it would require an actual area of responsibility beyond 'being a wizard'. There's no scenario where you're given a position on paper that requires zero investment of time and effort.
What do human court wizards do usually then?

And while we're at it...

What do rune priests usually do for their dwarven kingdoms?

We can fill quotas of spying done, items enchanted, or mysteries researched, but...

"Why would the Dwarves risk it?"

"Dwarves are naturally resistant to magic."

"Oh, that explains it. A perfect fit, then. I wish her well."
I really want an Omake or Interlude of Belegar walking into the next Elector Meet, chewing out literally every person in the room, and then marching out to go talk with the Colleges and any Knightly Orders in the city. Atleast they know how to get shit done and remember their oaths.

Assuming we stay at K8P (and it's looking pretty likely) Belebro's practically certain to offer us a position (or variety of positions) where we can choose right in the middle of the venn diagram of "most assistance to belegar" "make sure the Grey College is happy with the position" and "make sure belegar can form a robust council for political purposes"

Like, I can imagine him creating a "Councillor-but-not-quite" position where she can look after the eclectic mix of situations where she excels without taking a "traditional" council seat from those he might be able to win favours from by putting on the council, It's the sort of thing a "slightly-unorthodox-but-savvy" dwarf king might do.

EDIT: No possible position with no workload would make everyone happy; It's kind of inevitable that we're going to end up in a role that will demand its pound of flesh in the form of actions: the best we can hope for realistically is a position where the required actions overlap with what we'd be doing of our own accord, of course, but it's unlikely to be strictly that.

[X] Speak with King Belegar and King Kazador about the relationships and apparent rifts between Dwarfholds.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with foreign relations, as a Spymaster focused on threats outside the Karak.

[ ] Scout the rest of the Eight Peaks, to find out what other horrors are waiting out there.

I'd rather we have better stealth skills before scouting the Skaven. Also more interested in external spymaster type stuff.

[ ] Try to follow Johann, to see what he's getting up to.

Poor Johann, considered an internal threat up there with the skaven and Goblins. This is a seriously meh option. We've barely met the skaven so he's not gonna be dabbling in their tech yet.

[ ] Join Karak Azul as they raid and scout in force the other portions of the Karak.

This one is just a personal preference thing. For now I've had my fill in the expedition, there's always gonna be opurtunities to have a more direct combat role.

[X] Claim the site where Ranald mugged Mork and build a shrine to Ranald there.

[ ] Though your future relationship with the spiders is still unknown, they do appear to be a new species and you do have a number of corpses available. Have Esbern and Seija help you autopsy the creatures for a paper.

While spiders are interesting, we already have the big spider action in progress. This is just studying some corpses and we shouldn't chace every little research oputunity that comes. There are some very big research actions in the pipeline that are more efficient to spend our actions on.

Snake Juice, Liber Mortis, Waystone Hub.

[X] King Belegar is allowing you to use the King's Armoury. Recover your extant study materials from Stirland and tuck them away safely in there.

The whole reason Snake Juice never got done was
A) some only wanted to do it with Ranalds Blessing
B) some value time sensitive actions very highly and kept pushing back snake juice.

[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends, and you'll be practically next door in Altdorf. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.

:)

[X] Make a full report on the geopolitical troubles among the Dwarven Empire, even though some of it was said to you in confidence.

We are a loyal Magister of the Grey Order.

I also think the dynamic of "Spying" and Friendship will be very interesting to read.

My ideal action plan is 2/3 personal and 1/3 job. We aren't a freshly minted journeymanling desperate to impress at our first job. Besides, our research actions can now benefit the Empire quite a lot more than at the start of the quest.

You guys seem to be glossing over the ever lucrative "no official position" position.

Depends on what we want, but it's certainly possible to fully under the table and pretend to be retired.

So long as you don't mind betraying the confidence of your newest and best friends. Which I don't plan to do unless there's an actual chance a Civil War is going to break out.
I don't see it as any worse than Kazador being like 'So how bout that Belegar then' and us telling him what Belegar is like.

We've sworn ourselves to a secretive order of wizard-spies for 19 years ever since they saved us from a life of an ignominious peasant at best and the burnt stake at worst. They place tireless loyalty to the Empire of Man above all things, and taught us as such.

But dwarves are cool too I guess

It's not, unless we want the Gray College finding another job they think we'd like. Wizards don't retire, they just do less dangerous things.

Belegar should just make Mathilde his court manling, in charge of all things manling, such as dealing with the undumgi and riding herd on the inhabitants of Karag Nar.

Well, I still hold scouting to be very important, but...I trust Boney to present us with options and the appropriate knowledge of requirements for such, so I can wait and see on that front.

We'll be able to pop in on Anton and Wilhelmina with the supply votes, but it'll basically boil down to "Sorry, wish I could stay longer, things still hectic at Karak Eight Peaks. Gonna help Belebro get the rest of his kingdom back, see you in a few years I hope we can visit longer, love you, bye!"

The vote will be something like this:

[-] Head Ranger...
- [-] Focused on threats inside the Hold - the greenskins and Skaven in and under the six retaken peaks.
- [-] Focused on threats outside the Hold, such as Karak Drazh, Iron Rock, Thunder Mountain and the Border Princes.
[-] Steward, managing trade and tolls, leading the Undumgi, and being point of contact for Ulrikadrin.
[-] Court Wizard, investigating magical phenomena in and around the Hold.

[-] No role. Catch up on your personal research projects.

Please nobody actually try to vote on this yet.

Can someone voting for it explain why this option is so popular?

It's not that it doesn't need to be done, but why push it now with so many limited-time options available. Once Mathilde's status in the Eight Peaks is settled, she could help out with this over the next couple of years. Why put it ahead of other things where the chance will not come again?

Getting it done now means we'll have information to work off of before normal turns start up again. We have 6 other peaks and the underground and other major locations, all of which could have lots of threats and opportunities. There's a lot we could be doing, but only if we know where to go. Best to get scouting done now before we have to commit one of our 6 very-much long-term actions for the next 6 months.

That's the thing with Belegar being both unafraid of heterodoxy, and a administrative genius; he doesn't need to try and fruitlessly try to shove us in the Dwarf Lord shaped holes of your traditional Dawi council, so long as it's not grudge-inducing to more traditionalist dwarfs, he could create a perfectly tailored position for a "spymistress-scout-sherrif-wizard".

That looks good, but I do worry a bit that stepping into an already well established role might draw ire to belegar for his temerity in appointing a manling to his council, and annoying whoever'd be likely to get the position were we not here. (the most veteran ranger/friendly hold's second prince/third most veteran runepriest respectively)
