I'm coming from the place, that i would not be happy to learn someone has went and talked about me working to someone, worked out the details, and then come to me for final acceptance.
Unless there is a good reason, i would want to be involved from step one, or as early as possible.
Uh...then why would you be arguing FOR that?

Like the whole point of the discussion is, with Zhengui present, talk to Bao about the possibilities of monetizing what he produces and from there, hash out whether its worth considering or to just bury it quietly.
Talking with Zhengui first is exactly doing the thing you said not to do, to ask him whether he wants to do this thing which you don't know what. If he agrees he's agreeing to an unknown and unknowable, then you'd go to Bao to talk about the possibilities and then from there maybe just tell Zhengui no, his decision didn't matter.

Sensible would be to just bring up what the process might involve, what profitability it has, then work out whether its acceptable.
In what world would you even seek consent without finding out what the operation is?

I know i am not always the most succesful communicator, but at this point you must be working to miss my point.

edit-
You know what, i'm dropping this tangent.
I have said my piece, and somehow completely messed it up.
Whatever comes will come.

"That does sound like a fun distraction. Something a little more peaceful than our usual fare, right Li Suyin?" Ling Qi said giving her friend an encouraging look.

"I would imagine so," Li Suyin replied with a smile.
Suyin: *imagines the rain of loot cascade*
Meanwhile down in the Outer Sect Su Ling has a traumatic flashback out of nowhere.
"Hoh, I sense a story there," Bao Qian said with a chuckle. "And you sir Du?"

The other boy hesitated for a moment, but seemed to firm up his resolve as Li Suyin turned to look at him. "Well I would not want to be so rude as to refuse your invitation Sir Bao, so I will join you as well. I suppose giving my work a little active testing would be helpful."
Dude still doesn't want to, but he wants to go out with Suyin so...
The days passed quickly, with Ling Qi splitting her time between home, cultivation and time with her spirits. She spoke with her mother about the trip, and the lessening of the older woman's worry when she spoke of going along with her friend as well as the Bao scion made her feel better about her somewhat selfish choice. Of course, Zhengui was happy to come along anywhere she went, and Hanyi was was just glad to get the opportunity to get away from the mountain.
A chaperone is always a good idea. Its fine for shorter visits or within occupied areas, after all with Cultivator senses, anything which has other people within a kilometer radius isn't really private without specific screening.
Going out for days is just a mite on the side of improper.

Hanyi's rocking that exploration insight is she?
As a result, when the day of the meeting came, she was actually the first to reach their departure point, since it was not so far from the hill set aside for Zhengui. Of course, while she was glad that her spirits were eager, there were definitely some downsides to this.

"So, how cute is this Bao guy anyway Big Sis?" Hanyi chirped cheerfully. She sat on the outer ridge of Zhengui's shell, idly kicking her bare feet.

"It isn't really appropriate to talk about that kind of thing when we're in company Hanyi," Ling Qi replied tiredly, deflecting the question as she had numerous other inquiries of similar quality.

'Which is why I'm asking before they get here," Hanyi complained, giving her a pout. "C'mooooon, just tell me."
Hanyi a cute and a brat.

...so just how good are his abs?
"Hanyi should stop pestering Big Sister," Gui said gamely, his voice rumbling up from beneath them.

"Who asked you?" Hanyi replied, thumping her fist on the back of his shell. "Zhen, you're curious too, right?"

"I Zhen, am only concerned over whether the Bao man needs biting or not," her little brothers serpentine half hissed imperiously.
Zhen, no biting!
"Please don't," Ling Qi said flatly, tilting her head to give him a reproving look. "Hanyi, we're just doing business, there's no reason to worry about things like that."

"If you're gonna think like that there won't be," Hanyi huffed, crossing her arms. "Big Sis lets opportunities pass too easily! Your gonna end up like miss Qingshe with just this big doofy son to keep you company."

"Where in the world did that girl learn such sass from," Sixiang chuckled.

Ling Qi thought that she would be doing quite well to end up like Qingshe, the powerful sixth realm, and mother to the river dragon Heizui she had challenged last year. "Just be good Hanyi, I can sense him approaching, so you can judge for yourself in a moment."
Wow, thats some top quality iceburn.
...the best part is how it flew over Ling Qi's head.
"That sounds like a pretty good future, yes. She has high cultivation and a good son."

Bao Qian emerged into the artificial clearing that Zhengui had made for them only a few minutes later. His eyes were on the ground, examining the churned soil and fragments of wood, charcoal and ash left behind from Zhengui's little snack.
Zhengui's little snack now makes entire clearings.
Boy's gonna eat the house if we don't look out.

Churned soil...hell, Zhengui dug up the stumps to eat too didn't he?
He looked much the same as he had at their previous meeting, save for the rather massive pack hefted onto his broad shoulders. He was also not alone however. At his side trundled a spirit beast with a rather potent aura.

It, or rather she from the feel of things, took the shape of a badger and stood about a meter and a half high at the shoulder. The spirit beasts thick fur had a shimmering, metallic look too it, silver and black gleaming in the early morning light. Its claws, similarly looked much like the ones Shen Hu generated in a fight, sharp black diamond. The beast regarded her steadily with with bright red eyes, and she felt the tingle of assessing qi pass over her as it did. The badger let out a low whuff-ing sound and nudged its shoulder against Bao Qian's side, causing his gaze to snap up from the ground.

"Ah, Miss Ling, ready bright and early I see," He greeted cheerfully, rolling his shoulders to adjust his pack. "And these must be your spirit companions I suppose."

"This is Zhengui, and next to me is Hanyi," Ling Qi replied graciously, gesturing to each of them in turn. "You brought a companion as well I see."

"So I did," Bao Qian said agreeably. "Say hello Yinshi."
A prospector's spirit. Metal and Earth badger with perception arts huh?

Yinshi.
Silver stone. Or Enjoying Poetry. Or Winning Things.

"'Lo," the beast said disinterestedly, pawing at the soil. Her diamond claws sliced through broken fragments of wood and plant matter as if they weren't there, stirring the soil.

"Hiya!" Hanyi greeted cutely giving Bao Qian an assessing look that was all to obvious.

"Hello!" Gui greeted with some cheer, poking his head out of his shell, to look down at them. "I'm sorry if you were hungry too! I already finished eating."

The badger looked from the soil and snorted. "Not a problem kid."

"We are not a kid, we are Zhengui," Zhen hissed proudly.

The smaller spirit beast looked up, meeting Zhen's imperious gaze, and pawed casually at her snout, brushing a streak of ash from her gleaming fur. "You sure are," she said blandly.
The reaction never gets old xD
Zhen narrowed his eyes, trying to work out if he had been insulted. Ling Qi rested a quieting hand on his scales. "Is there something interesting about the ground around these parts?" She asked instead steering the conversation away from the potential disagreement.

"It's because Gui is such a messy eater," Hanyi sniffed daintily. "He should clean up better."

"I simply noticed a change in soil quality when we neared this place," Bao Qian cut in. "I was a bit distracted in my approach, so I will apologize."

"It's nothing. I was just curious about what had drawn your attention," Ling Qi replied.

"Your companion seems to have a highly vitalizing effect on the earth. It is one of the things I suspected could be turned to a profit about you, and it seems I was correct, if the effect can be distilled, we will have a tidy little seed business on our hands," Bao Qian said.
Distilling the growth essence from the ash is certainly more convenient than carting busloads of ash, though I imagine you'd be mixing it with a filler before applying on site.

Not sure if water would do, you'd use water for normal fertilizer, but the Fire and Wood fertilizing might not react so well.
"Is that so," Ling Qi said, not quite sure she liked how he had put that.

"Don't jump to conclusions now," Sixiang warned softly.

"Oh yes," Bao Qian continued. He didn't miss a beat, but she could tell that he had noticed the cooling of her tone. "One way or another, I shall be staying in the south, and I hope that we can establish a mutually profitable friendship."

She met his eyes, she could read between the lines of his words well enough. She allowed herself to relax fractionally. It was remarkably blunt for how such things went, but if that is how he wished to approach things, she wouldn't complain.
Okay, so reading between the lines of that.
Ling Qi didn't have a problem with monetizing Zhengui's ash, but she took umbrage to Bao Qian discussing it as if she had already agreed to the marriage...which wasn't what he intended, he's just offering to start with plain business I think?

She chilled a bit once he clarified or backtracked. Hard to tell the difference.
As she opened her mouth to respond however, she looked up and to her right as she sensed Li Suyin approaching. A moment later, peering through the trees, she spied her friend and her expression turned dull.

Li Suyin sat in the shade of a covered sedan chair. Carved from deep red wood, it was open in the front, with an awning of white silk jutting out of the front. The whole thing was born upon the shoulders of her skeletal guardians. Bear and boar had both received a serious overhaul since she had seen them last. The spider silk wrapping them was now stretched over something, giving them the impression of moving musculature, and their empty eye sockets had been fitted with fiery rubies that glowed with inner light. Their metal armor had been replaced with plates of thick spiky black chitin, inlaid with etchings of powdered jade that glowed with qi.

"Li Suyin," Ling Qi sighed aloud despite herself. That girl, she had to know what she looked like, right?

"...I see cousin Qingling has had quite an influence," Bao Quan said a touch blandly as he followed her gaze.
...I'd say.
Certainly couldn't see the shy girl of last year make an entrance like THAT.

She looks like a decadent vampire queen!
She almost missed Du Feng floating at her side, seated upon a colorfully woven carpet that hovered about a meter above the ground. He was, somewhat surprisingly, unbothered by the macabre trappings of Suyin's conveyance… or at least he was very good at hiding it if he was.
Oh a flying carpet. I wonder how stable it is.

"What are you two talking about?" Hanyi asked, clearly displeased to be left out of the conversation.

"Big Sister's friend is almost here. Hanyi would know if she paid attention," Gui said just a little smugly as he stood up, dust and ash raining down from the bottom of his shell as he lifted himself from the ground.

Hanyi shot him a dirty look but didn't reply.
Hanyi's perception is pretty atrocious.
Also thats a little rare for Gui to be the smug one. Usually thats for Zhen.
Ling Qi let herself glance at her spirits in amusement before returning her attention to Bao Qian. "...How did she end up so different from the rest of you anyway?"

"I'll not air my cousin's secrets," he replied. The debris raised by Zhengui's movement flowed around him and his spirit as if they were surrounded by an invisible barrier. "Rough mien or no, cousin Qingling is still a Bao in heart and spirit."

Ling Qi hummed to herself and dipped her head slightly in apology. She supposed that was an answer in itself. "That was a rude question, my apologies." It had been too off the cuff, she was still working on balancing formality and casualness.

"I'll not take offense if you forgive me for the slight I gave earlier," he replied cheerfully. "Do we have a bargain?"

"I suppose so," Ling Qi replied, feeling a little bemused.
Hmm, sort of wondering if this exchange was baited out or not. He sort of invited the question with his statement, then Ling Qi asked without thinking and accidentally caused some offense, which let him neutralize his own.

Certainly its not a bad tactic for a trader.
"Don't worry, we're hardly in a hurry here," Ling Qi reassured her, even as Hanyi nudged her in the side with her elbow.

"How, how come we don't have comfy seats?" Hanyi asked quietly.

"Zhengui's shell is good enough for both of us," Ling Qi chided, turning her attention back to the others.
Next thing you know, Hanyi will be taking some pocket money to commission a fancy fireproof cushion from Du Feng when we aren't looking.
"...the poarters you have here. I hope you are not going through too much expense to keep them powered during the trip," she returned to the conversation with Bao Qian in mid sentance, addressing Li Suyin.

"Oh no, please do not concern yourself," Li Suyin reassured him. "I am powering these two through my own qi right now. Unless we have to fight it will be fine."
Oh huh, thats an option that'd certainly make the bigger constructs more affordable with Ling Qi's Qi stat of "Yes".
"Well, if that's so, there is no problem," Bao Qian chuckled. "Still these are impressive constructs. Do you still work with such things Miss Ling? I seem to recall hearing tell that you made use of something similar in your tournament matches."

"Ling Qi is quite skilled at formations when she applies herself," Li Suyin said, giving her an encouraging smile. "She picks up the principles very easily, compared to myself."

"So much for using her to deflect attention huh?" Sixiang mused.

"It is nothing so great," Ling Qi replied hastily. "It was only Li Suyin's help that allowed me to make something so useful. Formation crafting is something I am only an amateur in. I have not had the time to tinker with it at all since the tournament."
The comedy scene of two introverts desperately trying to push attention onto each other!
"Even so, it is quite a skill to develop such a thing after only a year of work, it would be a shame to let such a talent wither on the vine," Bao Qian said cheerfully.
It was never a conscious choice, just the mechanics change...bumped it off the table after Shenhua's deadline.

I actually expect Formations skills to be more relevant as we expand on our divination and projection arts, they make good anchors for permanent effects.
And later as fief lord too.

After all while you can farm out most formation work, you know that necessarily, security and privacy formations are practically intrinsically backdoored to their creators, unless you have the skill to examine and validate their work yourself.
And you can drive a harder bargain with "why should I hire you for this job rather than do it myself" than applying competitive hiring, because the canny formations specialist probably WOULD have price fixing amongst allies.
"Are we going to go soon?" Zhen asked, a bit of childish boredom audible in his tone. "Lazy Gui will fall asleep soon, I think."

"I am not sleepy. Do not use me as an excuse," Gui grumbled.

"I agree with the kid, too much word grooming going on," Bao Qian's own beast grumbled. "Walk and talk."
Word grooming huh?
I suppose the exchange of praise bears some resemblance to apes grooming each other. Doesn't do much, but makes the pelt nice and glossy...
Despite the awkward moment, they were soon off. Unlike the two of them, Li Suyin and Du Feng did not have any spirit beasts along. Suyin's Zhenli was staying at her workshop to oversee projects and Du Feng had not bound one. Ling Qi remained atop Zhengui's shell, seated just behind his head. Bao Qian joined the others in using a talisman for conveyance, a conical platform a meter across at its base, seemingly carved from a single piece of dark forest green jade. His spirit beast Linshi merely slipped into the earth like a fish into water and remained visible only through occasional ripples in the dirt as they travelled.
I briefly imagined Zhenli in a labcoat.
It was cute.

Wonder if theres anything to Du Feng not having a spirit, he's been fairly quiet and not very much enjoying attention despite his preferred attire being rather visible. Would it be impolitic to ask?

Or maybe we just spent too much time around freaks of wealth, talent and temperament.

[X] Zhengui, and matters of profit. Try to learn more about Bao Qian's intentions and what exactly he is doing down here and why.

The other choice seems a bit rude, as you're trying to find out about Bao Qingling after kinda being told to not talk about it.
Anyways, I assume formations would've been more important if we decided to be a permanent disciple of the Sect. Since the Master would've been the formations guy.

Edit: Oof, didn't see that two hour warning.

We should help Du Feng find a spirit while were starting our spirit matchmaking thing.
Assuming he proves worthy to spend time with Li Suyin ofcourse (i hope he will).

"Oh no, please do not concern yourself," Li Suyin reassured him. "I am powering these two through my own qi right now. Unless we have to fight it will be fine."
So now that Suyin's gotten them to the point where they're sustained by a dedicated portion of her Qi rather than spirit stones, the Guardians function almost like artificial spirit beasts? They just don't give any cultivation bonuses (that we know of).

Mind you she did specify that it was just for passive functions like walking and carrying her sedan, if they had to do anything more strenuous it'd start pulling off the spirit stones powering them

Although, enabling the formations to be active without spirit stones, at least passively, is a substantial jump in Li Suyin's ability to keep her high-end formation work prepared for any combat.

And, depending on what counts as strenuous activity, it should cheapen her production formations. This way she doesn't have to spend spirit stones to keep her little skeletal helpers going, and can just passively give them qi. It would be... interesting, I think, if Li Suyin was able to keep improving this feature to the point where her formations are passively gathering qi from the environment (like what our cultivation art does regarding stellar qi) which would be a significant jump in the number of formations Li Suyin could have running at any one time.

Wouldn't it also count as training for her own Qi reserves ?

--Spend time to maximize yields by scooping up his poop as he goes. This is PROBABLY not worth it unless we give the job to Hanyi and she'd probably try to kill us with her glares if we did.
--Spend money to maximize yields by commissioning automatic poop scooper talisman to suck up the ash into sacks. May or may not be worth it, depends on how much it costs and how much the poop is worth, unless Suyin volunteers.
This is silly. Hiring a guy with a shovel can be done with silver. A magic talisman to do the job is like buying a car made of gold to drive.
