Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

To be fair, cultivation is basically all about making yourself grow and progress. It's not just Ling Qi and her friends with that theme, it's all imperial cultivators. You can't possibly advance in cultivation if you remain stagnant.

Sure, but she has it as a domain insight, which seems to me to indicate a more profound relationship with that theme than just the general "well if you want to advance you can't remain stagnant" tautology.

Year +114-15Bai Xiaofen
Year 015-16Ling Qi
Year -116-17Shen HuChu Song
Year -217-18Luo ZhongBao QinglingWen CaoRuan ShenYan Renshu
Year -318-19

Here is our best guess at graphing age to see who is a crazy monster tier and who is 'just' a crazy elite tier. We don't know where Bian Ya would fit since we don't have her age (and also, we don't know her cultivation level either). Bao Qian at Green 6 or 7 - we hope he's the year-3... At Green 6 and year-2, he'd basically equal Luo Zhong, who himself is equaling what we expect to be monster / ducal progression.

Also Year-2 is just as crazy as our year, especially if Bian Ya was in that year group as well. Argent Sect is having a good few years, but our year isn't uniquely crazy then.

(It might help explain why Shen Hu's friend didn't tell him though if there was spillover issues from Year-2 and the 'friend' was genuinely worried about spots).

I guess you can say that Ling Qi is parroting Xuan Shi even though he wasn't referenced in that line of thought and the actual source which gave her the idea was. It's not what I would do though.

But we clearly have different opinions on the matter and I'm not going to try and allay your concerns. I'm not even sure you want someone to allay your concerns. Ultimately, I believe that there are sufficient narrative ways for Ling Qi to explore Zhengui's nature and deepen both of their understandings regarding said nature without the need to involve someone else. I can't change the past interactions Ling Qi has had with Zhengui, but I can look forward and be optimistic about the possible future.
Ah, yeah I think we're mostly talking past each other. I'm not universally pessimistic. I think the status quo is unworkable and there's no already-operative shake ups to the objectionable facets in our short-term plans, plus there's some visible opportunities that may or may not be slipping us by. Though I wasn't very clear, this is actually my version of a call to action. If the status quo isn't working, change it. It was left implicit when I should have been explicit; I firmly believe we can do better.

Anyway, in Domain talk, I think a HEUG vitality-themed Fortitude skill would pair nicely with the following domain effect:
Allies in a scene with whom Ling Qi has at least four ranks of positive relation receive a one rank bonus to Spiritual Avoid, Armor and Combat Perception(Boosted Rank cannot exceed Ling Qi's)
Fluff-wise, it'd be like her sharing her vitality with peeps to help with their Armor. An SNR-themed skill would be more like spreading herself over allies like a blanket that leaches from enemy attacks, which is fine too, but not as funny. Plus we can just actually do that with the art(two actually, FSS does that as well). Hyper health buddies is more entertaining and surprising to others.

If we want that though we need new arts I think.
We could totally unlock a skill like that if Ling Qi just gets super beaten up before she cultivates SNR. It'd make SNR's actual use kind of weird, but whatever, we dodge most physical attacks anyway. If it stands in the way of my desires, the art's trash! Disregard Lakes, cultivate Wood.

Turn 6: Arc 2-2
"That does sound like a fun distraction. Something a little more peaceful than our usual fare, right Li Suyin?" Ling Qi said giving her friend an encouraging look.

"I would imagine so," Li Suyin replied with a smile.

"Hoh, I sense a story there," Bao Qian said with a chuckle. "And you sir Du?"

The other boy hesitated for a moment, but seemed to firm up his resolve as Li Suyin turned to look at him. "Well I would not want to be so rude as to refuse your invitation Sir Bao, so I will join you as well. I suppose giving my work a little active testing would be helpful."

Bao Qian nodded, seeming pleased. "Well, I shall make the arrangements with the Sect then. We will be leaving in five days time, and the journey should not be more than a few days depending on our pace."

"I will look forward to it," Ling Qi said as she rearranged her schedule in her mind. She didn't have much that she needed to prepare, so she would only be using a little time. It wasn't like she couldn't cultivate on the journey as well.

***

The days passed quickly, with Ling Qi splitting her time between home, cultivation and time with her spirits. She spoke with her mother about the trip, and the lessening of the older woman's worry when she spoke of going along with her friend as well as the Bao scion made her feel better about her somewhat selfish choice. Of course, Zhengui was happy to come along anywhere she went, and Hanyi was was just glad to get the opportunity to get away from the mountain.

As a result, when the day of the meeting came, she was actually the first to reach their departure point, since it was not so far from the hill set aside for Zhengui. Of course, while she was glad that her spirits were eager, there were definitely some downsides to this.

"So, how cute is this Bao guy anyway Big Sis?" Hanyi chirped cheerfully. She sat on the outer ridge of Zhengui's shell, idly kicking her bare feet.

"It isn't really appropriate to talk about that kind of thing when we're in company Hanyi," Ling Qi replied tiredly, deflecting the question as she had numerous other inquiries of similar quality.

'Which is why I'm asking before they get here," Hanyi complained, giving her a pout. "C'mooooon, just tell me."

"Hanyi should stop pestering Big Sister," Gui said gamely, his voice rumbling up from beneath them.

"Who asked you?" Hanyi replied, thumping her fist on the back of his shell. "Zhen, you're curious too, right?"

"I Zhen, am only concerned over whether the Bao man needs biting or not," her little brothers serpentine half hissed imperiously.

"Please don't," Ling Qi said flatly, tilting her head to give him a reproving look. "Hanyi, we're just doing business, there's no reason to worry about things like that."

"If you're gonna think like that there won't be," Hanyi huffed, crossing her arms. "Big Sis lets opportunities pass too easily! Your gonna end up like miss Qingshe with just this big doofy son to keep you company."

"Where in the world did that girl learn such sass from," Sixiang chuckled.

Ling Qi thought that she would be doing quite well to end up like Qingshe, the powerful sixth realm, and mother to the river dragon Heizui she had challenged last year. "Just be good Hanyi, I can sense him approaching, so you can judge for yourself in a moment."

Hanyi swatted away her hand as Ling Qi tousled her hair, and stuck out her tongue one last time before putting on a more dignified expression. Let it not be said that Hanyi had not grown up at least a little, she could be serious if she knew it was important to Ling Qi.

Bao Qian emerged into the artificial clearing that Zhengui had made for them only a few minutes later. His eyes were on the ground, examining the churned soil and fragments of wood, charcoal and ash left behind from Zhengui's little snack. He looked much the same as he had at their previous meeting, save for the rather massive pack hefted onto his broad shoulders. He was also not alone however. At his side trundled a spirit beast with a rather potent aura.

It, or rather she from the feel of things, took the shape of a badger and stood about a meter and a half high at the shoulder. The spirit beasts thick fur had a shimmering, metallic look too it, silver and black gleaming in the early morning light. Its claws, similarly looked much like the ones Shen Hu generated in a fight, sharp black diamond. The beast regarded her steadily with with bright red eyes, and she felt the tingle of assessing qi pass over her as it did. The badger let out a low whuff-ing sound and nudged its shoulder against Bao Qian's side, causing his gaze to snap up from the ground.

"Ah, Miss Ling, ready bright and early I see," He greeted cheerfully, rolling his shoulders to adjust his pack. "And these must be your spirit companions I suppose."

"This is Zhengui, and next to me is Hanyi," Ling Qi replied graciously, gesturing to each of them in turn. "You brought a companion as well I see."

"So I did," Bao Qian said agreeably. "Say hello Yinshi."

"'Lo," the beast said disinterestedly, pawing at the soil. Her diamond claws sliced through broken fragments of wood and plant matter as if they weren't there, stirring the soil.

"Hiya!" Hanyi greeted cutely giving Bao Qian an assessing look that was all to obvious.

"Hello!" Gui greeted with some cheer, poking his head out of his shell, to look down at them. "I'm sorry if you were hungry too! I already finished eating."

The badger looked from the soil and snorted. "Not a problem kid."

"We are not a kid, we are Zhengui," Zhen hissed proudly.

The smaller spirit beast looked up, meeting Zhen's imperious gaze, and pawed casually at her snout, brushing a streak of ash from her gleaming fur. "You sure are," she said blandly.

Zhen narrowed his eyes, trying to work out if he had been insulted. Ling Qi rested a quieting hand on his scales. "Is there something interesting about the ground around these parts?" She asked instead steering the conversation away from the potential disagreement.

"It's because Gui is such a messy eater," Hanyi sniffed daintily. "He should clean up better."

"I simply noticed a change in soil quality when we neared this place," Bao Qian cut in. "I was a bit distracted in my approach, so I will apologize."

"It's nothing. I was just curious about what had drawn your attention," Ling Qi replied.

"Your companion seems to have a highly vitalizing effect on the earth. It is one of the things I suspected could be turned to a profit about you, and it seems I was correct, if the effect can be distilled, we will have a tidy little seed business on our hands," Bao Qian said.

"Is that so," Ling Qi said, not quite sure she liked how he had put that.

"Don't jump to conclusions now," Sixiang warned softly.

"Oh yes," Bao Qian continued. He didn't miss a beat, but she could tell that he had noticed the cooling of her tone. "One way or another, I shall be staying in the south, and I hope that we can establish a mutually profitable friendship."

She met his eyes, she could read between the lines of his words well enough. She allowed herself to relax fractionally. It was remarkably blunt for how such things went, but if that is how he wished to approach things, she wouldn't complain. As she opened her mouth to respond however, she looked up and to her right as she sensed Li Suyin approaching. A moment later, peering through the trees, she spied her friend and her expression turned dull.

Li Suyin sat in the shade of a covered sedan chair. Carved from deep red wood, it was open in the front, with an awning of white silk jutting out of the front. The whole thing was born upon the shoulders of her skeletal guardians. Bear and boar had both received a serious overhaul since she had seen them last. The spider silk wrapping them was now stretched over something, giving them the impression of moving musculature, and their empty eye sockets had been fitted with fiery rubies that glowed with inner light. Their metal armor had been replaced with plates of thick spiky black chitin, inlaid with etchings of powdered jade that glowed with qi.

"Li Suyin," Ling Qi sighed aloud despite herself. That girl, she had to know what she looked like, right?

"...I see cousin Qingling has had quite an influence," Bao Quan said a touch blandly as he followed her gaze.

She almost missed Du Feng floating at her side, seated upon a colorfully woven carpet that hovered about a meter above the ground. He was, somewhat surprisingly, unbothered by the macabre trappings of Suyin's conveyance… or at least he was very good at hiding it if he was.

"What are you two talking about?" Hanyi asked, clearly displeased to be left out of the conversation.

"Big Sister's friend is almost here. Hanyi would know if she paid attention," Gui said just a little smugly as he stood up, dust and ash raining down from the bottom of his shell as he lifted himself from the ground.

Hanyi shot him a dirty look but didn't reply. Ling Qi let herself glance at her spirits in amusement before returning her attention to Bao Qian. "...How did she end up so different from the rest of you anyway?"

"I'll not air my cousin's secrets," he replied. The debris raised by Zhengui's movement flowed around him and his spirit as if they were surrounded by an invisible barrier. "Rough mien or no, cousin Qingling is still a Bao in heart and spirit."

Ling Qi hummed to herself and dipped her head slightly in apology. She supposed that was an answer in itself. "That was a rude question, my apologies." It had been too off the cuff, she was still working on balancing formality and casualness.

"I'll not take offense if you forgive me for the slight I gave earlier," he replied cheerfully. "Do we have a bargain?"

"I suppose so," Ling Qi replied, feeling a little bemused.

Their conversation went no further though, as it was around that time that Li Suyin and Du Feng arrived on their conveyances.

"Good day Miss Li, Sir Du!" Bao Qian called raising his hand to wave as they entered the clearing. Ling Qi simply smiled and raised a hand to wave to her friend.

"Hello, Sir Bao, Ling Qi," Li Suyin greeted, leaning forward in the padded chair held aloft by her guardians. "I hope my preparations will be sufficient to keep up on the journey ahead."

"You should not underestimate your designs so Li Suyin," Du Feng said.

"Don't worry, we're hardly in a hurry here," Ling Qi reassured her, even as Hanyi nudged her in the side with her elbow.

"How, how come we don't have comfy seats?" Hanyi asked quietly.

"Zhengui's shell is good enough for both of us," Ling Qi chided, turning her attention back to the others.

"...the poarters you have here. I hope you are not going through too much expense to keep them powered during the trip," she returned to the conversation with Bao Qian in mid sentance, addressing Li Suyin.

"Oh no, please do not concern yourself," Li Suyin reassured him. "I am powering these two through my own qi right now. Unless we have to fight it will be fine."

"Well, if that's so, there is no problem," Bao Qian chuckled. "Still these are impressive constructs. Do you still work with such things Miss Ling? I seem to recall hearing tell that you made use of something similar in your tournament matches."

"Ling Qi is quite skilled at formations when she applies herself," Li Suyin said, giving her an encouraging smile. "She picks up the principles very easily, compared to myself."

"So much for using her to deflect attention huh?" Sixiang mused.

"It is nothing so great," Ling Qi replied hastily. "It was only Li Suyin's help that allowed me to make something so useful. Formation crafting is something I am only an amateur in. I have not had the time to tinker with it at all since the tournament."

"Even so, it is quite a skill to develop such a thing after only a year of work, it would be a shame to let such a talent wither on the vine," Bao Qian said cheerfully.

"You praise me too much," Ling Qi replied. "Perhaps when I have settled other matters. Ah, actually, what you have is pretty impressive as well Du Feng, flight is very difficult below the fourth realm is it not?"

Du Feng looked surprised at her swift change of subject and compliment. "No, I cannot claim such a feat Miss Ling," he replied quickly. "While I am proud of my work it is not true flight, the carpet can only hovers and moves in relation to the ground, it cannot rise any higher than this, or maneuver in three dimensions as your dress can."

"You are too hard on yourself Sir Du," Bao Qian said. "You should not downplay your talents so easily."

"Are we going to go soon?" Zhen asked, a bit of childish boredom audible in his tone. "Lazy Gui will fall asleep soon, I think."

"I am not sleepy. Do not use me as an excuse," Gui grumbled.

"I agree with the kid, too much word grooming going on," Bao Qian's own beast grumbled. "Walk and talk."

She almost missed the grimace and look of long suffering Bao Qian shot to his spirit beast in the moment before he clapped his hands. "A fair point, shall we be off then?"

Despite the awkward moment, they were soon off. Unlike the two of them, Li Suyin and Du Feng did not have any spirit beasts along. Suyin's Zhenli was staying at her workshop to oversee projects and Du Feng had not bound one. Ling Qi remained atop Zhengui's shell, seated just behind his head. Bao Qian joined the others in using a talisman for conveyance, a conical platform a meter across at its base, seemingly carved from a single piece of dark forest green jade. His spirit beast Linshi merely slipped into the earth like a fish into water and remained visible only through occasional ripples in the dirt as they travelled.

Conversation continued as they went, for her part, Ling Qi tried to turn conversation toward...

[] Li Suyin, her current projects and relationship with Bao Qingling. Bao Qian seems to know her, and you can learn more about him obliquely.
[] Zhengui, and matters of profit. Try to learn more about Bao Qian's intentions and what exactly he is doing down here and why.

"I Zhen, am only concerned over whether the Bao man needs biting or not," her little brothers serpentine half hissed imperiously.
I look forward to the day Zhengui tries to give "the boyfriend speech" to a suitor.

At least when she declares herself the Necromancer Queen, we can say that we saw it coming.

I know we're mostly doing this to learn more about Bao Qian, but I feel we've been neglecting some of our oldest friends. I want to see how other people see them. Also, does anyone else feel like Bao Qian's comments about our formation talent going to waste is a little bit from yrsillar? Like the point is that we have this powerful field available to practice, but it's falling by the wayside?

Don't get me wrong, I understand why it has, and that might not change soon, but it should definitely be something we start planning to incorporate into the training schedule.

Blame Shenhua and the Math Cabal on that, we just don't have time to develop the skill as much as we might like.

I'm inclined to focus on a topic our guest is interested in, he's already established little interest in talking about the Bao Qingling thing, and we want to make a good impression regardless of where this all goes.

I think this is my favorite part of the chap. So much Ling Qi-ness right there.

[] Zhengui, and matters of profit. Try to learn more about Bao Qian's intentions and what exactly he is doing down here and why.

Bao Qian is (supposed to be) an ally. i'd rather ask directly than try to use subterfuge on an ally.

[edit] also: profit. i'm interested in the potential additional source of income... and maybe some more focus on Zhengui ? i don't feel he has seen push progress recently...

You know, a "Big Sis" would probably be much less reluctant to talk with younger sis about what boys she finds cute.

It only gets awkward and requires deflection if "big sis" is really more "mom".

Formations would require actions and study time we can't really spare?
...I think the basic beef here is our personal knowledge base for things like formations is painfully lacking. Like if we were from a Noble family we could set up more in the way of formations and get more bang for our buck.

the problem is that we have no evidence of it actually being powerful for cultivators at our age and realm

IIRC, formations become more personalized after a point.

It takes a lot of investment, and our schedule is booked.

On one hand, I want to gain 'friendship points' with Li Suyin, and give Ling Qi an excuse to learn In Character about what Li Suyin has been doing and her projects. On the other hand, We just asked in front of Bao Quian "What is up with your sister" and he replied "It is private, don't want to talk about it", so as much subtle as we try to be, I am sure he won't appreciate us turning to Li Suyin and offhandedly asking "SO, what is the deal with him? (And, since his sister is your friend, maybe share some details about her, too)"

The other option offers us: A chance to secure a source of income for the future, increased relations with the Bao and... Zhengui himself. We've been neglecting him a bit, I feel like. And him being the center of our conversation, I am sure he will feel pleased by it. Maybe we could even ask him what he thinks of his talents being used, not for battle, but for business.

I think making a clear mistake in getting LQ's back up, noticing it and soothing ruffled feathers feels much more endearing than simply not making the mistake to begin with.

Creepy is cool. Necromantic Arachnid Queen, for the win!

This is cute too. He's doing a good job of making me warm to him, though I'm still not positively disposed towards an engagement.

Well played Zhen. Very effective way of ending the circlejerk. We get it, you're all pretty, let's move on. Fun scene though.

Qingling and Suyin interest me more than business ventures though I'm not strongly opposed to the latter winning.

Yes and no. We got a bunch of formation training through social actions with Suyin last year, but with the new system ... unless we start seeing exploration slash social events with formation related actions we just won't be getting much formation exp anymore. Like for example a door locked with a formation, or maybe mom (or snake apprentice ?) getting interested in the field meaning we'd spend our social action(s) with them working on (teaching them) the subject. I could see us getting some sweet formation exp from that.
But as you said, we simply can't spare AP on the issue.

If we can't spare AP, then a social action giving formations xp, instead of something so useful we would choose to train it, makes the action worse. So either we should be training formations with AP or we should be glad we're getting other stats from social.
We're forced to either consider formations strong and so worth time or weak and so not worth time, as with all skills. Adapting our judgement to our situation, of course.

I do like the idea of going back to formations training. If not immediately, eventually. Or as Ayashi says, I hope we bump into Formation related things during our explorations so that we can gain more with them just by casual interacting with formation stuffs. ....Which reminds me! Witnessing formation work from Li Suyin could actually provide some of that learning, as well. I am sure she is high enough above of us on that field that just watching her casually do her thing will be valuable for us, in that regard.

And, considering formations knowledge has saved us a couple of times, maybe bumping and crashing against a Formations test and failing at it will prove that it is an important skill for us to keep up to date. Especially if we intend to keep breaking into places and being all stealthy.

I do think that the reason for why we stated putting effort in formations in the first place was because we were seriously threathened at first, and everyone seemed to be against us, so self-defense with formation was a high priority. Now we are pretty well off, and being backed with by the Cai makes it so that people don't want to mess with us. We are no longer in dire need for self-defense, which is why we no longer see Formations as critical as we used to. It has gone from 'it literally keeps us safe and alive' to 'it's a convenient thing to have'.

Wow, everyone taking a car this time. How far are we traveling here?

Back during that military exercise, it felt like everyone walked there and around instead.

I would have loved to spend more time on formations, and pushed for it a few times but they generally sufferd from being worse than anything we coud do ourselves by the time we got them and huge time crunch to improve them. Like forget getting them good enough to punch up they couldn't even punch down.

Our ossuary scouts didn't so much fall behind the stealth power curve as never get near it in the first place, and once caught would be a pretty obvious signal someone was there. Given they didn't have any sort of real independence (meaning we had to be in the area) they became pretty worthless compared to just going ourselves.

The best the ossuary horror could do seemed to be providing one or less round of distraction to Sun Liling's domain weapon.

The Silk guard is cool but basically pointless as no one woud dare attack us at home (not least becasue of Meizhen).

And with the time crunch hitting us putting any action points into "useless" skills that weren't decent to begin with basically became impossible. The one time we actually improved a formation (ossuary scout, mostly through omake power) we got it to fly, but it still didn't even get it remotely competitive in terms of stealth.*

Essentially the problem was that any potentially useful fomations to the protagonist only appeared several months into the quest, were completely useless withoug being levelled up multiple times and that they couldn't be leveled up without specifically dedicated AP, unlike most skills. Plus the base skill does literally nothing for them. It would take multiple AP to go up a single level and each probably needed around 5 levels to become actually useful. Which falls out to a stupid number of AP. So basically they became untenable virtually from the word go.

*Partly I think this comes back to the huge problems we had with balancing stealth in the first thread. Because everyone and their mother had perception bonuses out the wazoo and several stealth tests had to be rolled to infiltrate the scouts would basically be autodetected even by people substantially below us.
