1) This is an acceptable small prestige boost.
2) Tentative, mainly because Krotone is the city with the greatest reputation for swoleness and I respect that. :p
3) I consider this a good idea.

Theopilos Theopilos is thanked for their speech, but is also asked in the future not to resent the demoi in such a way as to create his own deme in contravention of the laws of the assembly, which mandate that any deme must have kleftes to lift their stones, not weasels.
Impressively, for a minute there it looked like the weasels would actually manage to lift the thing. :D

The stage was set for a battle for dominance over the Messapii which Eretria had inadverdantly wandered into through its overlordship. Immediately, tempers flared over the inauguaral cattle drive which had been initiated by the Office of Barbarian Commerce. Though the Agoranomos was a member of the Demos Drakonia, he wisely recruited Mnemnon Keylonos to help him negotiate the trade deals with the surrounding allies.
Good call. He is a mighty wrangler.

... some like the young Heliodoros salivating at the very thought of beef outside of festival days, only to be told off by an elder who reminded the young one that spitting or drooling on public city property was strictly forbidden by city laws. Such were the intensely strict laws of Hesperos the Lawgiver, who had written them for the city all those years ago.
D'oh.

The result was a political shakeup. Immediately, Symmachos announced that he would not run against for xenoparakletor in the following election, stepping aside and taking ownership within the faction for his failed push for an intervention in Kerkyra. Epiktetos Linos, the rising star whose colonial land policy had been praised by many, re-entered the council of strategoi. Kyros Gennadios, who had been so suddenly dethroned, said he would step aside from politics until the following election to comprehend where the appeal for his opponent had come and how he could better represent the people. Finally, Mnemnon Keylonos, who had been so ungratefully pulled down to third place after achieving every single one of his foreign policy objectives, spent most of his time negotiating cattle contracts with the barbaroi.
Poor Mnemnon. I feel sorry for him. He did a good job, it's just... we needed a lot of things he couldn't really do, I guess. :(

@Cetashwayo What are the respective armies and navies of our three potential allies like? How would you rank them in terms of pure strength?

Krotone has the smallest navy and the largest army, Lokri is in the middle, and Rhegion has the largest navy. Their army composition goes something like:

Krotone: 3,500 Hoplites, 5 Triremes
Lokri: 3,000 Hoplites, 15 Triremes
Rhegion: 2,500 Hoplites, 25 Triremes

It depends on whether we want to fill out each other's weaknesses or double down on each other's strengths.

Krotone has the smallest navy and the largest army, Lokri is in the middle, and Rhegion has the largest navy. Their army composition goes something like:

Krotone: 3,500 Hoplites, 5 Triremes
Lokri: 3,000 Hoplites, 15 Triremes
Rhegion: 2,500 Hoplites, 25 Triremes
Hm. An alliance with Krotone would position us well to help deal with the threat of raiders in southwestern Italy- strong hoplites. We could compensate for their weak navy if we needed to.

An alliance with Rhegion would give us, by Italiote-Greek standards, something close to naval dominance unless Carthage or Athens decides to argue with us... but again, it pits us counter to the interests of the Sikeliote League in the long run. Very much the Thalassocracy Option, though.

Lokri represents an intermediate option, at the risk of pissing off the other two.

Also good to note for future reference that Krotone has about the same kind of phalanx the Tarentines did, plus or minus a little, while Rhegion may be one of the few city-states in the region capable of breaking our navy.

Truly it is heartening to see the Demes of our fair city react not like the Oligarchs of other more tyrannical cities like Korinthos, who respond to democratic backlash from the citizenry with bloodshed, but instead with understanding and reform, where even when their power is challenged, they do so remember their duty and willfully relinquish it. While some may consider the raucous arguments and the sometimes theatrical and farcical displays put upon within the assembly as a just criticism of the assembly, I reject that notion, for while our arguments can indeed be heated at times, and at some times satirical, in the end we have always come to consensus of sorts, never balking even at trying decisions. Now with that bit of self-aggrandizing out of the way, I would like to present my views on the issues.

Many would say, and credibly so, that our previous refusal to grant Avarthias Artahias greater wealth and accolades makes a choice now to grant him even minor power a reversal. I cannot argue that semantically, they are indeed correct if one were to simply break down the issue that simply. However, as I am sure my fellow educated citizens can understand, the context of the matter is key here. When the Xenoparakletor brought the previous issue to the assembly all those years ago, the issue at stake was not something as trifling as leading an organized cattle run to the city, but instead a matter of elevating a seemingly hellenized but still barbaric chieftain to prominence in a bid to bolster their efforts in resisting the Tarentines. The gravity of the two comparisons cannot be said to be equal by any reasoning man. Thus I see no reason to deny the man's request, especially as he has shown that he is much more closer to a Hellenes, though of course not one of us, than the rest of his rivals.

One need only look toward history to see what our dithering regarding the pacified Peuketti gave us. The answer is nothing. Instead, after we had finally learned to change our approach, we were rewarded by a King such as Harpos, who credibly and faithfully led the Peuketti for us toward a time of prosperity for the both of our peoples and now we prosper. With many noting how we may potentially run into a deficit this year, especially if we choose to undertake a potentially taxing foreign mission in addition to the construction of the Hill of the Divine Marriage, it would be foolish to disregard the increased revenue we would receive from granting a simple matter of authority over to one of our vassal subjects.

When it comes to the matter of future allies, I believe that the answer here is clear. While Krotone is not the power that they used to be, they are still Hellenes who wield great power within Italia. More importantly however, out of the potential choices offered to us they are the nearest to us, able to respond if we ever are to be threatened in the future, whether it be by Syrakousai, or potentially even Taras if things there are unwell. While the Thuriians might potentially chafe at having their opportunities for expansion curtailed by our developing relationship with Krotone, I feel that our generous offer to trade Lykai for control of Herakleia Lukania, with them being granted protection of the latter, to be enough to satiate their ambitions and show that we remain allies still with them.

As for the momentous additional foreign mission that has been granted to the assembly to discuss, I feel that most of us are in agreement regarding what actions we must take. For many years Eretria Eshkata has prided itself as being the preeminent naval power with the Adriatic, with foes being filled with fear when they see the expertly manned triremes of ours power through the blue waters upon which we draw trade. Now, however, with the distasteful state of affairs within Kerkyra, the Liburni have once again taken the opportunity provided to them and set sail upon their pentekontors, ravaging trade around them. For years we have heard news of their presence growing, as more and more merchants tell us tales of their distress. Now I feel that we should wait no longer as the threat has become untenable. If we are to call ourselves the great power within the Adriatic then we must put down scourges like the pirates of the Liburni else our name mean nothing. The Northern Etruscan League has already succeeded in a mission to curb the activities of the pirates, and have promised aid with the Enetoi if we choose to follow through. Now citizens of Eretria, I feel that the time is right for us to strike, to end this threat before even more of our wealth lays at the bottom of the sea or in the hands of thieves. Let us show the world why Eretria Eshkata is to be feared when our rowers take to the sea!

So speaks Alkaios son of Kleitos.

Tempting as it is to go for Venice we need to clear out the pirates first.

Aside from amber trade (and IIRC iron in the Julian Alps) the lagoon city also produced a crapton of salt. It's also pretty much invulnerable if you sont have a navy, even in the 1848 rebellions it took Austria besieging it by land and sea for months to batten the city down.

The adriatic sea also has the advantage of no real opposition unlike the Ionian or Tyhrennian seas. So we should double down on expanding and consolidating our hold there ASAP.

What's people's reasoning for selecting Lokri? As I recall we rather twisted the knife on them in our war with them in favour of Krotone, so I'd think the latter might be the easier opportunity for Obander to pursue.

[X] [Mission] War Against the Dauni: For decades the Dauni have sat on the border of the Epulian League and menaced our allies with raids and skirmishes. Their kings have plotted against us, warred with us, and allied against us many times. Now, the time has come to pay back the debt they have bestowed upon us by destroying them once and for all. The xenoparakletor will rally the cities of Herdonia, Salapia, and whatever other cities would be willing, and back them in a rebellion that seeks to overthrow King Ausculos and end the Dauni as a threat. Whether that will be through annexing the rest of the cities or simply replacing their leadership with something more amenable to Eretria remains to be seen, but the Dauni must be made to never again threaten the city of Eretria Eskhata [War against the Dauni with attendant strategos options].

"For too long have the Dauni been a torn in our side, a far more annoying torn than a few pesky pirates. I say it is time we remove this menace from our borders once and for all!"

Gregorios wonders jokingly if Obander is in truth the Thuriian Xenoparakletor. For next year he might try to reconcile it with its neighboring rival Krotone, in an effort to make common cause against the Bruttiian threat. Furthermore, he will try to convince Taras to hand over control of their previously shared colony Herakleia Lukania. Truely blessed are the friends of Eretria Eskhata!

Citizens! Fellows! Come to me and listen to when I speak!

Firstly, I would ask you, you fair men of Eretria, to aid me in righting a wrong! In addressing a misjustice! Mnemnon Keylonos! He who served as our Xenoparakletor! He who won brotherhood through Arête and skill at wrestling with the King Of The Peuketii! He who through guile and wit halted the bloody hand of the Dauni when we did march against Taras! He who even now serves the city loyally, without a tear at our casual dismissal, aiding the Drakonids and reaching across Deme lines! Let us, my fellow citizens, shower him with honour and rewards! Let us acknowledge his fine deeds and good work in his office, and let him know his solemn and impressive work is respected and admired by all good Eretrians! That his removal, was not due to lack of respect, or lack of acknowledgement of his skill, but the circumstances created by the Fates themselves!

[x] User Motion: Honour Mnemnon for his fine work as Xenoparakletor publicly, before Barbaroi, League and Citizens alike

Who will lift my Rock!!!

Next I beseech you! Think of our new alliances! Rhegion already stands with our coalition against the tyranny of Syrakuse, and further, they stand in the way of our Sikeliote allies desires for control of the straights! They are friends in an odd way yes, but also enemies, one day we may fight with them, but we may also fight against them, such confusing circumstances make for poor allies and poorer, less true, friends. None can be honest and true with a dagger hidden behind their backs! The same must be said for Krotone, except far worse, not only is Thurii, those brave Ionians who stood against Taras alongside us, aimed to one day fight them, they are in decline! No longer are they Hegemon, no longer are they our superiors, or the superiors of Lokri, who's fleet far exceeds their own! No, we should not aid a dying man, who is set to one day clash against those we already call friend. Instead, let us look to finish the work of Herodion! Let us assure Lokri of our friendship, and offer the protection of ourselves and our allies. We all have seen the power of gratitude, amongst the Peuketii and at the battle beneath Taras' walls, where the League Hoplite's gratitude did give strength to their arms and hearts. We all can see that this is a time to forge a true friendship, that des not impede any of our current allies. Further, this does eject Syrakuse fully from the mainland, greatly decreasing their leverage and power in the coming conference, no doubt perhaps one day allowing us to halt their ever hungry, grasping attempts at domination forevermore!

Finally, I do speak on Barbaroi, to our south we have tamed the Messappi, however, as we have seen, they are still greatly divided, and we have seen the flaws of such a system before, and the rewards of unification with our current Vassals. The Peuketii and their history is an evidence of how Eretrian dominion should come about, and the results it should bring, let us show Artahias our trust and respect as we did to another king, so long ago, and let us reap the benefits in a generation from now, as our forefathers did.

To the North and East the tales of barbarians are far less welcome, though Salapia and their fellow Dauni do cry out for the righteous overlordship of our fair city, we, I feel, must turn our attention East, to where Illyrians do gather. For years now, we have heard of Piracy, of boldness, of growing numbers of traders sent scurrying, already we have established ways to try and deal with this, looking to those blessed by Ploutos to ease the fears of traders and merchants. But that is not enough, we hear now that we can end this, wipe these pirates out, they grow, year after year after year, and so to does the number of Trimemes needed to bring them to heel grow, and the boldness of their actions grow to match our discontent. If we do not stop them soon, it may come with a blood price. The Drakonids do offer us a way to cast down the Pirates, give shelter to the merchants that offer us succour and coin, and allow the landless to set up another colony that will both allow us to better trade with Illyria and provide them new, better homes where they can farm and buy Panolopy, as all Hellenes have a right to.

I urge you my citizens, look to the east, look to end this Barbaroi threat, before they continue to grow, as a great tree that will cast a shadow over the Adriatic that is ours by right of destiny!

So Speaks Ajax, son of Lalage, Ekdromoi!

The Liburnians' boldness grows. Already they disturb our trade. With Kerkyra unable to act, we must drive out the pirates, before they attempt a raid on one of the smaller Epulian cities, and drain our trade revenues. Choosing to support Artahias and to seek an alliance with Krotone are ways to stabilise the situation to the West as much as we can. We cannot afford a distraction once we start chasing pirates and building a new colony.
So says Nereus son of Theodotos.

SKANTARIOS: Ajax, son of Lalage, is wrong. Does the hoplite expect reward for holding his shield up in a fight? No, for it is his duty! Does the psilloi have any expectation of the city when he is sent forth against the foe without armor or a horse? No, no, a thousand times no! So what perfidy is this? Have the great men of the city come to see the offices as prizes to be stolen and not grave honors whose occupancy is reward enough? The day we reward aristocrats for doing their duty we will have beggared ourselves truly, in coin and in right.

And I name you ungrateful! Mnemnon has proven himself capable and good, and has been tossed down from his position, only to continue doing good work, without complaint and showing a willingness to enact the will of the majority of the citizenry, crossing the lines between Deme which we have all just recently raged against, without being pressured into doing so!

To call Mnemnon a Mere Aristoi, to ignore the lack of complaint, lack of bitterness and willingness to do what he can to aid the city without listening to the restrictive Deme, tools of the Aristoi, is to spit upon his work!

The entire point is that Mnemnon has not viewed himself as being robbed, as many of the politicians have, but instead that he has rejected that! You who stand here and place him within such a broad category, ignoring his virtues of duty!

I reject your condemnation, and point to the fact that, not too long ago, we indeed rewarded a Psilloi for his bravery and skill in committing an act of heroism, that you now claim was his mere duty!

Should we now ignore similar contribution from a good man, who displayed great Arête simply because of his class? What bitter, petty reasoning is this? To Raise up a Aktimone for doing his duty without complaint on one hand, only then to spit on a Xenoparakletor who was crucial to winning the war and solidifying our friendships, who achieved all the goals we asked of him on the other hand a few years later!
