Of Threads Ordered and Tangled
Eighth Day of the Ninth Month 293 AC
Somewhat to your own surprise you find yourself liking Ryam. Whatever may be said of his order, you appreciate his genuine concern for the common good beyond the squabbles of lords and princes. Better to learn less and keep what goodwill you had gained so far, tenuous as it may be, than to take one step too far and have him become wary of an over-curious stranger. "I too fear that war may soon come to Westeros, for I have heard disturbing rumors about the upcoming Conclave of the Faith..."
Firstly you speak of the ambitions of House Tyrell, careful to couch it in terms of vague rumors, the sort of thing that is more fancy than fact, but also as something 'Corlys' feels he must ask, knowing as he does a good deal of Fey fair and foul and how few of them would be thoughtful overlords. One does not set a playwright of songsmith at the head of a realm expecting peace and prosperity, and grand dramas are oft unkind to those caught in their path.
The Archmaester looks disturbed, though it is clear as day he has not heard even half of what you had just inferred. Whether that means all his peers are in the same boat you could not say for certain, but if they are the secret is now revealed. "I shall have to send a letter to the Grand Maester with this information..." While he does not expand upon his feelings on the matter aloud, his face tells the tale of his disdain for Pycelle just as clearly to your eyes.
On the matter of Brother Lucan, however, the Archmaester has much more to say: "Ethereal beings are not necessarily as wise nor indeed as benevolent as they may appear to most, even should they have the best intentions. Even were these ordinary times, the reinstatement of the Faith Militant would be disruptive... now with the Dragon breathing down our necks it would be calamitous. I will not mince words with you, Master Waters, Lucan can be the spark in dry tinder, drawing to him all those looking for simple answers to the realm's current tribulations. After all, it is hard to find any answer simpler than 'let the gods sort it out'."
"A Tyroshi saying... or rather half of one," you note carefully.
He sighs, one hand going to his temple as though to massage away an ache. "It seems I am not as free from superstition as I had thought, for I would rather not speak the whole of it aloud, lest fate conspire to bring it about."
"How likely do you judge this scour taking root to plague the land?"
The question hangs in the air unanswered a long moment before he finally speaks: "Not all my skills could put a firm number upon those odds. Who is to know how men's hearts might be moved by the sight of miracles and angels? I can only say that mine is not moved. The Father
I have worshiped since boyhood would not decree war that will be the death of thousands in the name of the Faith's secular power." The words are spoken with the quiet unshakable dignity of one who had already wrestled with his conscience and found peace in it.
You nod in admiration as much as agreement before asking, "What place will the Citadel have in the workings of the Conclave?"
"As a neutral and trusted party we have been entrusted with the counting of votes," the Archmaester replies, looking a touch embarrassed at sharing so much of the workings of his heart with a near-stranger. "Archmaester Perestan had volunteered for the honor of doing so, likely to give him as close a seat as possible from which to observe for his new book."
"Most Devout Kyle does not wish to be seen as taking too many of the High Septon's attributes?" you guess.
"I would not wish to speculate too deeply into the matter, but yes, that seems likely." Ryam shakes his head, his chain clinking faintly. "If he truly wishes to go so far as the news you gave me implies, he will need every show of humility he can muster."
"Let us hope that I was wrong, then," you reply smoothly, rising from the table to offer your hand.
"I would sooner verify myself, hope is too often but the first step on the road to disappointment," he replies, accepting the gesture. "This has been a most enlightening conversation. If you should need to speak to me again, Master Waters, feel free to tell the Seneschal your name and you will be given passage to my study. I am free most evenings after the fourth hour."
A legitimate reason to enter the Citadel, even better than you had hoped. You part ways with the Archmaester, satisfied at a job well done.

Unfortunatel, not everything can run as smoothly. That afternoon as you are working to discover the schedules of the various important Godsworn attending the Conclave, Leto finds you with unfortunate news. Elder Septa Maer's delegation had arrived amidst an incident at the docks involving a minor Deep One body-snatcher which had set the entire delegation in uproar. Of itself that might have been counted a boon, were it not for the fact that the commotion happened less than thirty yards from a quay servicing a ship flying the Silver Serpent banner. One of the Vale elders, Andrew of the Bloody Gate, had immediately marked the ship as the cause of the 'foul sorcerous influences,' citing the presence of a minotaur crewman as further proof of 'ungodly monstrosities'.
Thankfully raised voices had been the worst that had come of it as the Watch Captain who arrived first to the scene and then even the Lord Commander of the Watch, Ser Moryn Tyrell, had pointedly reminded the septon that if he had charges to level against a trader in Oldtown's port he aught to bring them to Lord Hightower, not bandy them about in public like a peddler calling out wares of dubious provenience.
The septon had grudgingly backed down, though you fear the confrontation has already drawn too much attention to you and your efforts than you might have preferred, enough so that you wonder if there is not a second tendril to the Deep One's efforts aimed against you rather than House Tyrell.
What do you do next?
[] Approach the Lantern Bearers to help them deal with at least the Deep One plot you know of once and for all
-[] Write in
[] Leave the Lantern Bearers to their task as you had first decided and instead learn more about Elder Septa Maer's faction, their numbers, and their likelihood of aligning with Brother Lucan
[] Approach one of the other factions
-[] Write in
OOC: Just to be clear, whatever you choose in the next 2-3 days the Lantern Bearers are moving in on the Deep Ones you pointed out.
